This guide discusses the comments system and its usage.
EVERYBODY can submit a comment, on almost every post, at PlanetPhillip.Com. No registration is required or encouraged. However, there are a few points I wish to make.
The comments system can be used to make a general comment, review a map or mod and lastly to ask or answer a question.

EVERY single comment is retro-actively moderated. This means every comment is checked after it has been posted. Anything which is deemed inappropriate is removed. This could be foul language, rude or offensive remarks, links to warez or other illegal activity. I reserve the right to edit or delete any or all of the comment. Comments with links are also moderated before they appear.

Each comment has its own “reply” button. Clicking this will take you to the comment area where you can type your comment. When you press “Submit” it will be posted directly under the comment you wanted to reply to. This is called threading and makes following conversation easier.

I recommend you type all long or detailed comments in a normal text editor first. That way if something goes wrong with the commenting system you at least haven’t wasted your time or lost your comment.

Keeping comments on the site on topic and useful is very important. Many non-spam comments don’t pass moderation and here are some comments I have deleted: “WTF???”, “CRAP”, “Help me Please” and “dfdgfgdfggdf”. These types of comments don’t help anybody, so please don’t bother posting them.

Occasionally people put links to files or images within comments. ALL comments with any kind of link within it is held in a queue for me to approve. I often either edit out the link or if I have already uploaded the file, simply delete the comment. I prefer to have all files host locally if I can.

I don’t delete comments because they are negative; I delete them because they are rude or offensive. If you don’t like a map or mod at least take the time to try and articulate your reasons!

It is possible for you to add some simple styling to comments. There are no a range of buttons above the comment test area. Clicking once will open a tag and clicking again will close it.
For example, if you want to make a word bold you would use <strong>bold word here</strong>. To quote a commenter use <blockquote>the quote here</blockquote>
You can also add a spoiler tag that will hide text until specifically shown.
Don’t forget to close the code by using the same tag with a slash at the beginning, as in the examples.

For all maps and mods I review I will try and add what I call a 5 Words Or Less Review. The idea is to try and encapsulate the review in 5 words or less. This might seem easy but in many ways it’s a lot harder than a normal review. The words will have to be chosen very carefully and I hope it may stimulate a more considered approach.
I would also like to suggest/request/challenge PlanetPhillip readers to attempt to do the same. I will be ruthless when it comes to approving any reviews. Attempts like “This map Sucks big time” or “Could not get any worse!” are completely missing the point. You have to be clever and insightful.
One more point: These reviews SHOULD NOT REPLACE a normal review, just supplement it.
It’s really a direct port of the 5 Word Speech from the recent Webby awards. However, it has its root in a couple of other projects that I find interesting. Firstly, there is the Mayfly Project where people had to describe their past year in 24 words. A little after discovering that I found the Quake Haiku Project which had me twisting words until sleep seemed a distant goal. Lastly we come to Le Ton beau de Marot: In Praise of the Music of Language by Douglas Hofstadter which while not directly related to five word reviews certain got my thinking about our use of words.

Please don’t add your name to the bottom of your comment. I delete all instances I see of this. Your name is already recorded in the comment, so there’s no need to repeat it.

Please keep your comments on topic. I will edit or remove off-topic comments. I see it like this: a visitor comes to the site to find information about a particular mod. If they have to read through lots of off-topic comments just to find what they are looking for, they probably won’t come back
If you have something you want to say that is off-topic, please use the forum
