I really enjoyed co-founding and co-hosting Podcast 17 but unfortunately I couldn’t continue for various reasons. I always wanted to start my own show but with a much more defined focus. Podcast 17 covers many topics that don’t interest me.
Now that I have started the Monthly Video Reviews and even the recent Audio Interview with Raphael Gilot I thought that perhaps it was time to explore the idea a little more.
I was thinking of starting a weekly 20 minute podcast with one guest and chatting about the previous 7 days worth of SP releases.
I know that it would be duplicating some of the Monthly Video Review but it may be possible to use the audio from the podcast as the audio for the mods section of the monthly video review. Maybe it’s best not to mix them? Who knows?
The “guest” would not have to be a developer, it’s not an interview. It would be anybody who wants to chat about the mods with me.
I certainly don’t want to encroach upon Podcast 17′s listenership but at the same time it might make a nice counterpoint to their discussions.
So, what do you think?
I’d also like to hear from people who are interested in being a guest, so I can compile a list.

In principle I think it’s a good idea, it’s something that you do well and both your podcost17 and monthly magazine here on PP are good examples of what works for you.
I am not sure of the format but I would like to see more coverage of topics that are currently under PP posts and forums, I think of late we have had some good debates here and it would interesting to air them.
As for participating, put me down as a maybe if you are desperate.
I am trying to think of some small weekly competition that you could set each week with your pp podcast, something simple which involves playing a short mod to answer a question.

Hey Phillip.
I think it’s an excellent idea. A lot of content from podcast17 don’t really interest me either. I listen to it because it’s the only real podcast that covers half life related topics. I prefer listening to you anyday because you’re always fair in what you say looking at both sides or more of an argument.
I think having guests on that arent even developers is also a very good idea, give voice to the people out there who could have some very good thoughts on whatever it is you want to talk about. You can have somehwat philisophycal discussions about mods in general, talk about what interests you in mods and games in general. I always want to know what people like in games and mods because those are the people I’m deving for. We always get to listen to developers, which is very interesting indeed, but it couldn’t hurt to have true fans of the mods on and have them talk about their opinions.
Maybe you could have a dev on and someone from the comunity and have them talk about mods and what they think of them. I would always be interested in listening to that.
I think it wouldn’t hurt pdocast17 one bit in having another show, it’s not really competing because both shows aren’t daily shows and you’re not on air at the same time. I think it will add a very nice variety for the comunity, presenting them a different outlook on things.
Well that’s my thoughts on this for now, I kinda brainstormed when I wrote all this.
Goodluck to you and I really hope to listen to you weekly.
ohh and you can put me down aswell if you ever need someone, after you let on mel that is, XD
I’m rather curious what he would have to say on different topics.
Peace,
Joure

I intended to add that the competition mod should be from either HL2 and HL1, I still think that there are many new gamers to HL that have not discovered the fun that is HL1. Also you don’t need to think up the suggested mods and questions each week you can always invite readers to email you with ideas.

Don’t feel as if you are invading my realm of work! You’re not; we loved having you on Podcast17 and I would certainly listen to and promote a PP Podcast. I would gladly play snips or parts or all of the PP Podcast on PC17. I think you should do it, you offer intelligent insight onto the singleplayer realm and I think you are the most qualified to do it!

To be honest, I personally feel that you should go with this idea and scrap the monthly review. Watching/listening to the reviews I felt that they were a little stale and just an audio version of a list on the front page, plus a few short comments.
Here’s what I would do:
1. Scrap the monthly video review.
2. Set up this new mini-podcast, and have the special guest. Make sure the guest has played most of the week’s new mods or is aware of the topics being discussed, and do a kind of news/reviews/interview/debate/discussion type thing.
Perhaps the new podcast could be merged with video footage, so it’s a hybrid of the two ideas.
I would like that. If it was only 20-30 minutes it would be nicely manageable too. The 1hr+ podcast is a little too long in my opinion. Hell, I’d take part if you needed someone to help get it going with!

Do it, do it now!! Have fun with it, entertain the masses, let us enjoy as well. Let the hilarity ensue!
I’ll even put on my “crazy American/Texan” voice and do an interview, if you dare!! :-p
Sounds like it’ll be fun.

I echo what CrowbarSka said. A weekly mini-cast would be better than the monthly synopsis, in my opinion!

I think it wold be really nice with a podcast with focus on single player mods/maps. I really like P17, but I don´t care much about multi player mods. Also I think that what CrowbarSka said sounds like a good idea.

I like the monthly video reviews, although they are a lot of work. Clearly there is a lot of crossover material but I see the MVR for a different type of PP reader, whereas the weekly mini PPCast would be for regular visitors. The MVR are more for visitors who don’t visit that much and want a quick guide to what is new, but the PPcast would explore topics or at least discuss them.
The MVR take a heck of a lot of time to produce and I think merging them may be too much trouble.
I’ll ponder some more and see what happens. Of course with the server move, FileFront closing etc, it’s not on the top of my priorities.

Hey Phillip
Been a fan of PC17 for some time now, and immensely enjoy the pod with your involvement.
I know its been some time since the initial discussion of PP podcast, however I do hope it is something you could possibly continue to develop.
With single player HL Mods being primarily ignored by the HL community, to continue its exposure through a concept such as this would be a welcomed addition.
Though I live on the other side of the world (Australia), it would be a program that I would be interested to help with and by the looks of the comments above, its something that a lot of HL single player MOD fans could continue to develop as well.
Cheers mate,
Chris

Chris,
To be honest I had forgotten about this with all the performance issues with the site.
I keep having so many different possible format pop into my head.
I’ll try and record one for July and maybe just talk about the best release of the month.
I’ll ask around and find a guest who can match my possible recording schedule.
Stay tuned and thanks for reminding me!
