AI Disabled Issue

Single Player First Person Shooter Maps and Mods for Half-Life 1, 2 and Episodes 1, 2 and 3

I have a friend who is developing a HL2 mod and has encountered a serious problem. Every time he dies he gets the AI Disabled message. Opening the console and typing AI_Disable only works some of the time

It’s possible the recent Steam update has caused this problem. He has searched all the HL2 mapping forums he normally uses and is stuck.

I would really appreciate if any PP reader can help him.

The classic fix is writing an “ai_fix.cfg” (lecture only) in the cfg folder and adding “exec ai_fix.cfg in “valve.rc”.

ai_fix.cfg is:

ai_norebuildgraph “1″
ai_disable “0″

It works, sometimes…..

I’ve been fighting this annoying problem on HL2 mods for about a year now. I tried the fix above and it worked for a while. The last time it happened I reinstalled HL2 and it’s fix again but who knows for how long. I’ve checked a lot of forums and a common response is “because you have a pirated copy” which I do not. Got the discs right here and the e-receipts for Epi.1&2. I would love to hear something official from Valve on this.

Try this:
1. Make sure your “maps” folder has a subfolder “graphs”
2. Make an “autoexec.cfg” file, containing the command: ai_norebuildgraph “0″.
3. put the file in your Steam\steamapps\your name\half-life2\hl2\cfg folder.

You will occasionally receive a “Node out of date, rebuilding” as you start a map. That’s an .ain file going in graphs. Its a good thing!

This solution has worked for all, except that one weird Russian mod…..

so i tried this thing. IDK now i wont play but by tomorrow I will tell if senator33 fix did worked. Thanks I also got this bug sometimes.

If you really can’t get anything from the mentioned fixes, try e-mailing Valve. They are generaly very responsive in regards to e-mails.

thanks for placing this new thread Phillip, seems we all have this problem from time to time, and we all know how frustrating it is, and it fully ruiins our game fun.

i as mapper never had it with my 19 sp-maps i made before, but with the latest mod we do seem to get this also from time to time, (when i compile my maps myself. last time Baltic compiled the map it didn’t happen anymore, i am so glad about that!!! so, he will do the final compiles.
many fixes like described above do help, some of the time, others only for a while. on my new computer i even have more troubles with it, because when i get the AI_Disabled message i can fix it with typing in console “AI_disable”, but then it seems that the combines run/walk 50% less as they did before, they don’t attack anymore, and…even stranger; floor_turrets don’t work at all anymore, there death you could say.
and i did get the AI error message even one time without getting killed. i just pressed Wsc. in game mode and loaded a previous save point. when that was loaded i also did get the AI error message!!
i do have dual core processor, maybe that could also cause this?

(personaly i do not have that experience with valve, that they always write back. i have mailed them a few times long ago about my mappacks/mods, but never did receeve one answer!)

I had this problem for a while. I don’t know if it is the specific same one you guys have: when I reloaded in my map from a autosave it would disable the AI. This befuddled me for quite a while until I tried running it on full w/o -onlyents or any of the other things. I haven’t had any problem since.

Create an autoexec.cfg file in your .. \half-life 2\hl2\cfg directory as follows:

bind f11 “ai_disable 0;ai_step;ai_resume”

Now when you receive the ‘AI Disabled” message (usually when loading a saved game) just hit the F11 key and all will be well.

senator33: THANK YOU!!! My problem was the “A.I. Disabled…” message appearing on *some* custom Portal maps.

Just for the record, I own Portal (bought the DVD version), did an install and full Steam update. Then I extracted all the GCFs and set up SteamEmu because Steam was being very obnoxious and adding nothing to the game apart from long load times.

Don’t know how it got there, but I had an autoexec.cfg with ai_norebuildgraph “1″ and ai_disable “0″ in it. (…maybe installed a map or mini-mod that included it?…) Changed 1 to 0, and now it just rebuilds the graph instead of AI Disabled.e

it does look like AI_Dsiabled 1 is fixing this problem again, but, that’s not true!!!!
or, better said, it does fix it only for 50% you could say. its true that the combines and other npc’s do ‘come to life’ again. but they don’t really act anymore as they should do. they hardly run anymore, or even walk. and when given by a trigger the command to attack the player, that they still don’t do. they keep standing and only shoot when they see the player, (like if they where spawned out of a normal npc_maker entity, instead of a npc_combine_s, that is used for more specific tasks like attacking the player before they even have seen the player. and take for instance the floot_turrets, they don’t work at all anymore after a AI_Dsisbled message, they only ‘come back to life’ again after closing HL2 all together and start it again.

so, although it seems the solution, it really isn’t, it only for 50% you could say.
