Hello and welcome to Around the Community 013, a collection of news items that caught my eye.
As usual I have some videos, some mod news plus a variety of other items..
Please remember, these articles are NOT a list of ALL the news that’s been released in the past week or so, just items that I wanted to highlight.
The BBC ran a story about how Doom is now available for purchase in Germany. I am curious to know if anybody has ever done any research on Germany’s youth. Are they less likely to be bad people because they don’t play video games? Of course, this research is impossible to do accurately as there are too many other factors.
I wonder if they ban everything that features violence and Nazi connections.
I have one Steam friend, who occasionally contacts me to buy games for him, so he can have the full version. It’s a delicate topic. I support sensible censorship but “sensible” is not so easy to define. Where do you stand on this?
Zwieracz recently released a double map called The Lost Island. It doesn’t feature any combat, which is why I am mentioning it here. It has two versions, day and night. It’s nice to look at and the gameplay consists of finding a wheel to open a door. If it were bigger I would beg for a combat version, but it’s too small. Check it out.
Funny little video explaining why below.

I didn’t even know this was possible, but the guys over at NMRiH have released their Steam theme. It’s a cool idea, good luck to them. I suppose now we will see dozens appear over the next few weeks. A PP theme, perhaps?
James, over on FPS Level Design has written an interesting piece about how players can become bored with the sound of their weapon. Definitely worth a read if you are interested in game design.
I am over 3 weeks late with this, but TyK-Lok has written an interesting editorial called Myth? Myth? Yeth. over on Podcast17. I have read it 3 times and started to reply 5 times, but I just can’t seem to get out exactly what I want to say. As soon I as finishing updating this post, I am going to reply, even if it’s a pile of jibberish!
GravityGunVille or GGV, as it’s know to its friends, is coming to a deadline. There have been a few WIP screenshotS sent to me and here are the latest ones
This Portal mod is new to me, but I noticed they have made 3 releases, with the latest, just over 10 days ago. I need to see what they are doing and found out why they are releasing these little demos. I it a beta or a demo? I wonder if they even know.
Reaktor, from The Trap fame, seems to be working on something called Snark Planet which is a partial conversion for HL. The demo has very little playable time and contains at least twice (maybe thrice) as much time in cut scenes, which are in Russian.
It’s interesting, but don’t bother unless you are really curious. Better to wait for a proper release. Again, I don’t understand the desire to release these demos. I definitely feel a rant coming on.
I had to delete a mod yesterday. It was called ETC ELE and it was basically a mod copied from Dave Johnston with a virus added. Sad the lengths people will go to to do bad stuff.

Hat Tip: Podcast17 152 Agenda
I am away from 13th September to the 22nd September. There will be NO updates on the site and I won’t be checking my email either.
The big problem is that the GGV mapping competition finishes whilst I am away. If anybody has any last minute questions, I am afraid they will have to make their own decision and I/we will deal with it on my return. Bad timing, but there was nothing I could do.
Two points to make here.
Firstly, there has been some cheating going on in the PPGGG. Sad, but true. Been thinking about how to stop it in future. One possible suggesting is to get ALL users to add their Steam ID in the email address field. It’s unlikely that many people have more than one Steam account. Well, less likely than an email address, which cane be set up in seconds. If I check a Steam account and it has no games in it, I won’t accept it as a valid entry.
What about you, do you have any ideas?
Secondly, as mentioned above, I am on holiday from next Tuesday until the following Thursday. The PPGGG will be taking a break while I am away, but will restart almost immediately.
As usual, I’m finishing with a non-gaming item. Aviary.Com is a VERY cool online suite of applications, including photo editor, audio editor and image editor. Definitely worth checking out.
Well, there you have it. Another ATC done. Thanks for reading and if you have anything you want featured, just email me with the details.
