Under certain radiation exposure this artifact opens a portal. Presumably the portal will lead to another artifact in the parallel world. Mission: Enter the portal and find the artifact in the parallel world. You will receive our new development, a suit that will allow you to safely get through the portal, and theoretically protect you from possible dangers in the parallel world. Once you have found the artifact, press this button on your suit and you will get teleported back to the Black Mesa laboratory.
Half-Life: Before – is a modification for Half Life with new levels and story. Mod based on Spirit of Half-Life 1.8 technology, that increased visual and functional part of mode, unfortunately this technology also brought some bugs.
- Title: Before
- File Name: hl1-sp-before-full.exe / hl1-sp-before-lite.exe
- Author: Vincevich “Gua” Andrey
- Date Released: 02 March 2009
Thiere are two versions: Full and Lite (Without music and most of the HD models)
1. There’s a small posibility that the boss will fly into a wall. Loading the last save helps.
2. If you try to load a saved game from the second map, the game will crash.
3. There’s an Alien Controller’s fireball floating on the first map once in a while.
4. Sometimes rain falls to a place it’s not supposed to fall to.
5. The scientist on the ship doesn’t talk sometimes.
6. Alien Controllers don’t fall to the ground after death.
7. It’s sometimes hard to blow the tripmine.

I am only part-way through this mod but wanted to post it, so you could all play and review it.
More screenshots and my review to follow when I get time.

and i forgot to put the thing

Wow, this was fun to play. Short and sweet. I liked the pistol model, the music was cool, and that was probably one of the scariest boss battles.

Previous comment was me, never check to see if I’m signed in or not.. Anyways I’d also like to add that it didn’t run very well on my computer when I was out on the boat, probably because of the rain.

Yep it’s a fantastic mod. Glad it’s finally here.
Unfortunately this mod has some problems with the game graphics so if it doesn’t run in one graphic mode then change to the other in the game settings. Open GL or Direct 3D one thing will work.
As for the gameplay it was short with maybe 20 minutes but one of the best mods hl1 in a very long time.

Played this about a month ago. Quite good and fun to play but pretty poorly optimized; getting some really awful framerate at certain points (especially at the beginning).
The boss fight was interesting but way too easy.

In a nutshell, 2 levels.
Here’s the lowdown, before I begin there’s quite a few things that where nicking from counterstrike deleted scenes, and that’s normally a No No due to copyright problems, they also took some music from system shock 2 and didn’t give proper credits for it.
** THIS PART MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS **
Anyway, You start on a ship with barely any supplys and a head crab right next to you saying HAI, so you scramble to get a crowbar and get knocked down to 80 or 90 health already. lucky for you there’s a black hawk nearby.. with the smallest gun window ever.
Making you way to the front of the ship to quiz the captain on what the bloody hell is going on you run into the obvious “Hey, lets push boxes to get up there.. puzzle” then some more running in to a very very badly lit hallway that I had to noclip past to get up the shaft (Sorry, I was pressed for time) To meet a bunch of freaked out soldiers who shoot anything that says the word “boo” Finally you meet some dude who says “Our thing has escaped, go kill it” you run back to the start jump down a hole and meet the most annoying end boss… ever. It’s basically that fetus thing at the end of half life that I can’t remember the name of at the moment with a barnacle mouth. How do you kill him? I have no idea. He eats some sort of Xen crystal that’s like.. I don’t know.. rock cocaine or meth that makes him so dam fast that I can’t keep running around in ciricals trying to kill this guy without any proper ammo or weapon! There’s an unlimited supply of ammo in a container on the side but you think you can hide in there but no, the dam container falls apart when he gets near the bloody thing! So he grabs you, rapes you in the ear and you need to start over again.. So I tried and tried and said sod this and put on notarget.. Here’s where things got werid, he’s not affected by it! but his ailen controllers above him are! I got so scared I put on noclip to escape him for a breather, Next thing I know I pick up my soda can for a drink only to hear me getting grabbed OUTSIDE THE LEVEL, *Insert Pepsi Spit take here* So after screaming the F bomb so many times I do impulse 101, Gluon gun his ass back to the stone age and that’s it.
In short, Nice level desgining, but do you really need to make the boss that fast or immune to console commands, really? IF you guys are so smart to do that why aren’t you really game devs who could be giggling to themselves to those sobs who cheat to get achievements or awards so the play the game fairly!
13th July 2009
The boss was much more likely to be a cycler with it’s model set to the fetus model, set to follow you around, with a barnacle attached to it, rather than the actual monster, so it wouldn’t be affected by commands such as notarget. And I didn’t really have that much trouble with the boss, just launched a few grenades at him, and shot him a bit.
14th July 2009
I must’ve played a different version as the boss I fought were pathetically easy as you could just run backwards in circles while unloading your arsenal into him until he’d die.
13th July 2009
This mod is awesome, is the best HL mod i have played in this year! The music and the models are fantastic, but i think that the third map is a waste of time from the mapper, i mean, he surely work in that for one week

Should this be installed into the “…Steam\steamapps\name\half-life\ ” Folder?
‘Cos when I run the Install App it wants to create a new Half-Life folder in C: root–
14th July 2009
Yes, it installs in the normal Steam HL location. If needed, let it create a new folder and then move it.

Two things, It says you have to have version 1,1,1,1 ( I had 1,1,1,0) so I downloaded an update hl1111_release but BEFORE does not load. Where is WON 1112?
14th July 2009
Cheers, Phillip
14th July 2009
Very playable, until the end that is, because the “final boss” is a bit silly – but. apart from that – worth a play!
14th July 2009
I was disapointed by the music (I think i begin to be old …) for the rest and even if i use my classic version with 1.1.1.0 and had several problems for the boss scene (I manage to finish it) it was short but pleasent in a quite limited space of design, but for sure the outro cutsene was well put together and really enjoyable in an original way to credit everybody
18th July 2009
is this playable without steam?
18th July 2009
This started off really good, and to be honest I was expecting a lot more, but I can’t be picky with any Half-Life 1 content coming out. Very short, very disappointing end – I would of rather faded to black than fighting that glitchy “boss”. Otherwise, everything else was top notch.
20th July 2009
Yes you can play it without steam..
But check the graphic settings. In WON hl one graphic setting doesn’t work.
20th July 2009
Played this when it first came out on ModDB. It’s not bad per se, but it’s not particularly good either. The first map suffers from awful frame dips, since it’s essentially one big, open map. Progression is confusing in places, the new models and skins aren’t particularly good (except the new 357) and since you can’t quick-save during the boss, it’s nigh-on impossible to beat him.
I’m used to better then this, and you should be as well.
21st July 2009
Ok I’ve installed it without steam by putting it in the C:Sierra/halflife folder and after installing the half life WON patch 1.1.1.2_final etc but whenever I try starting a new game an ‘error report’ window pops up, any help on what to do here?

Had its moments but what was the author thinking with the boss scene? A “grand finale” I bet. How lame. Well to me it ruined the map.
After restarting and watching that infernal cutscene over and over I quit. No point making a map if people are simply going to swear at it during gameplay. I’m convinced the ratings are like people having wandered the desert looking for water, and seeing a mirage, ie; absence of maps makes the heart grow stronger for…..just about anything!
Oh well, it was “something to do” and parts of the lead up to the end were pretty good.
31st July 2009
Same thing happens to me Justin. In my custom games list it comes up installed, but zero. mega bytes for file size. I put it in the same location as heart of evil which works fine. steam/steamapps/name/halflife,
but get error from half life launcher..
18th October 2009
It was quite fun, but had some slow-downs on my machine and that boss fight was… well… ridiculous??? Didn´t like that part, but the rest was very nice!
