Downloading this 1.84GB demo is well worth the wait. There is so much just in the demo that I can’t imagine how much is packed into the full game. I spent more than an hour playing through this previewed version of the underwater epic. I’m am fully amazed by what the next generation graphics engines are capable of. There are so many aspects to this game that I will only touch on a few to give you a glimpse of what to expect. If the game is still unclear, then go ahead and download the free demo and see for yourself the insane world of Bioshock that 2kgames thought up.

The demo begins with a short movie of the main character (you) in a plane. As it fades out there are sounds of the plane going down and crashing into the ocean. Then after swimming up from the water you begin the game. At first I thought it was still a movie but realized that I could look around. 2kgames added amazing details to the properties of water so it would appear to be real. Water ripples, reflections off of surfaces, splashes, floods rooms, drips from the ceiling, and much more. This must have been a huge project to make an underwater world that is constantly being affected by the pressures of H2O. As the story moves on you go inside a strange tower in the middle of nowhere. Inside is your first sight of the beautiful Art Deco architecture. The detail is amazing, rooms are curved and twisted, lots of lights and decorations, there’s even the old 20’s radio music playing in the background but don’t let the antiquity fool you, soon you will find that this world is much more advanced than meets the eye. As you walk around you’ll find the only place to go is in the submarine. After entering it you will be shown a short video about the Ryans so called Euphoria. Its seems so grande but upon your arrival, everything has gone wrong.

In the world of Bioshock, everything is interactive. If you see something that needs to be explored then you probably can. You will find items in trash cans, registers, on furniture, on people, and anywhere else you can think of. Always explore because there may be something there to benefit or even hurt you. Many of the items you find will affect you different ways. For example: smoking cigarettes will lower your health but will also increase your “Eve”. I’m not going to explain what each item does because you just need to experience it yourself. Some items can be combined with others to give you new abilities.

The enemies you encounter will mostly be splicers and they are not just easy zombies to hack down. You can try to kill them with the wrench or gun but it will be easier with your eve abilities with the combination of a weapon. Splicer will vary from different men and women who must have gone crazy with eve overdose or something. They are just bent on taking you out! However, there are times where being stealthy may get you to the next area. Especially when there are security cameras. I accidentally tripped one and couldn’t figure out how to stop the flying bot with the machine gun. At the end of the demo there is a short encounter with a Big Daddy and its kind of a preview of what you will see in the full game.

As for the levels, expect to be fully immersed in a destroyed Art Deco world with a lot of water. Everywhere you go there is this echo of a world made for fun and entertainment, but you will see the aftermath. What’s left is fire, destruction, and insane people. How do we make sense of it all? I guess you have to buy the full version. You see in the screenshots that there is debris everywhere from explosions or firefights. Some areas are well scripted with events that happen right in front of you. Some areas are just spattered with blood and fire. There seems to be no remorse left in Bioshock, everyone is for themselves. But you will have one friend on your radio who walks you through some of the areas. He will explain what eve is and how to use it. He will also explain briefly what happend in Bioshock.

Conclusion:

After only playing the demo I was completely blown away at the high quality graphics, action, and interactivity. Everything I enjoyed about FEAR, Half-Life 2, Doom 3, and Far Cry has been bumped up to a new level. I’m not comparing Bioshock to those games because it fits into its own category. I’ve already played the demo twice and I continue to find new aspects to the game that makes me enjoy it even more. I know it will be the same with the full version. There is so much replayability because you can make different decisions and have different strategies than the last time. The only things I wasn’t happy with were the excessive blood and the use of swearing. I would love for kids to play a game like this but it’s way too mature in nature. I hope in the future games can be released without all the brutality, but my final decision is that Bioshock has created a new reality of games where alternate realities can go beyond our imaginations.
