How people behave in small groups and large groups is very different from how they behave when they are on their own.
Even if you think of yourself as an intelligent and independent person you can sometimes find yourself manipulated.
The story I am about to tell you really did happen to me.

Art mods, Alt mods, Creative mods call them what you will, they have become more popular recently.
Whilst I am not a big fan of them, I recognise and applaud the creativity involved.
Using game engines for things other than gaming is certainly not new and and the more we explore possible uses the more interesting things get.

I have no idea if this idea has been proposed before but it came to me in a dream. It was between the “Trapped between two broken staircases” and “giant bees and giant cameras fighting”!
With the advent of Portal 2 people have been thinking about new gameplay mechanics for Portal, and that’s pretty cool, but has anybody suggested changing the way the portals work?

The gods are back and they are looking for a fight.
Abstract
A multiplayer mod concept, with loose historical references and a novel way of managing respawning
Over 3000 years ago Zeus and the other Gods caused the death of thousands of warriors in a siege of Troy.
The year is 2879 and New Troy is once again the site of pure carnage.

I’ve started this post about 10 times in the last 3 years and never finish it. In fact, at one time or another it has had its own website! I always stop and change the way I try and explain it because I am never happy with it. Well, this is the last time I start this post because I promised myself I would finish it today.

Allow me to introduce three seemingly unrelated points and then try to bring them together.
Apparently that’s what clever writers do, so I thought I’d try it.
I once remember reading that snakes can only “see” you when you are moving.

In the past I have suggested new gameplay modes for single player mods (An SP and MP Mix, Chase and Reach Me), well today I’m going to do it again. However, this time there’s a twist because there are hundreds of maps already available. Curious? Read on…

I’ve been a little generous when I described this as an SP gameplay mode because it’s really more of a scenario. However, it really depends on how you define SP game modes (More on that in another article). I’ve have published a few ideas for SP game modes in the past, including Chase and Reach Me, with the idea of expanding the possibilities when thinking about SP levels and this idea follows along the same lines and hopefully adds a new twist to the thought processes a player goes through when playing.

Hands up if you have played Lost Coast? Firstly, if not, why not? It’s free for Half-Life 2 owners and it’s actually a very fun level. Okay, hands down now.
If you haven’t played it go away and play it now and come back when you have fully explored and finished it.

Level ideas are ten-a-penny, so why am I writing about mine? Well, two reasons, firstly because it’s my site and I can and secondly because I want to challenge a level belief…

As I was writing something for the Learning Center project an idea popped into my head…

Introduction Here is an idea for a gameplay mod for Half-Life 2. I propose that somebody create a new version of the HEV suit to include a number of new features. I’ve listed my ideas but would welcome yours.

About We value freedom when playing games. That’s why if a developer can remove the illusion of a level being a linear game it is often considered good. (I disagree, but that’s for another post!). What if a game developer took a different approach and said “The player is going to have much less control [...]

Introduction I’m fascinated by the Roman Empire. Over the last few weeks I have been pondering how cool it would be to play an FPS game where the Roman Empire survived to the present day. Here I present some ideas to discuss.

The Right Question! In Poll Question 045 I asked “Would you buy and play a game that only had one difficulty setting?”. It was a badly worded question because I meant that the only level available was the HARD setting. Whilst posting a reply comment I had a flash idea….

About I have a request to make to the Half-Life 2 modding community…… Please would somebody be kind enough to build a mod that allows me to play other HL2 mods with very, very large hands.

About I’m fascinated by chase scenes in movies and real life. My fascination comes from the decision making process. I used to imagine myself as a film director and saying to the actors: “Okay, this is the chase scene. I want you to just flee. The camera will follow you where ever you go. Somebody [...]

About I have an idea that’s not fully formed but I want to present it to you now, so please bear with me while I try to explain it. I want to say that it probably isn’t feasible until the A.I. of the enemy becomes much better and doesn’t need paths and lots of code [...]

About This is a gameplay mod idea where you can jump from one player to another. Allow me to explain further. Imagine you are playing a game and in this game you never play a particular character. You can jump between any players you want to but you can’t die. If you die then the [...]

Introduction For some strange reason I started thinking about the old fisherman character in The Lost Coast and I thought that he might make an interesting character to make a mod around. Below you will find a couple of skeleton ideas for some mods.

I want to challenge a gameplay concept that we take for granted. It’s been on my mind for a while now but starting Half-Life 1 Episode 1 brought it to the forefront of my thinking. The weapons included in a game are one of the most, perhaps THE most, important element of that elusive thing [...]

Introduction I wrote the following story for a couple of mod developers who were looking for a specific co-op storyline. The idea of writing a draft story specifically for a Co-Op mod is an interesting one and to my knowledge that has never been done, nor has a mod been made specifically for two players. [...]
