This one looks fun. I just got back from vacation and have a lot of work to catch up on, but after that I'll give this a go.

Did this with HL2 Highway17 and Sandtraps up to the Lighthouse.
Hardened everything Combine but left the Antlions and Gordon 'as is'
Brilliant!
Beat the Gunship after the crane with just 2% life left. Phew!

How long did you first session last? About 3 times as long as it would on Hard. Great, harder and longer game play.

Was the second time easier? Hang on a minute, I'm still getting over the screaming heebie-jeebies from the first time!

Did it change your playing style much? Not tactics because that is my way anyway, whenever possible.
There's a lot of Gun & Run and Drive & Crunch so you have to be much sharper or die (which I did, lots).

I'll be using Myskill.cfg many more times to re-enliven older maps and mods - but not for Minerva Metastasis or Strider Mountain They're quite hard enough already but Myskill.cfg could be handy to soften up the zombies.

To get Myskill.cfg absolutely right is going to take experience.
I think it is important that mods and maps should be played as the developer intended in the first instance of hard skill. Thereafter, fair game

Not sure that I would want to combine this with no personal saves.
A great find. Thanks for that Phillip.

To lessen the damage your weapons do you can add a line like this to your cfg file. "sk_plr_dmg_smg1 4" This would change the damage for your smg to 4 per shot. You can interchange smg1 and 4 with whatever values you like, although you may need to lookup the weapon variables so you know what to use.

Anymore I start all the games I play on hard, I need to stop for the replay value though. Phillip, I thank you for showing me how to ramp up the difficulty.. it should give me the reason to run through Half-Life 2 yet again.. I might try to figure out how to bring down the damage that my own weapons inflict as well, I will let you know how that works out if I decide to do so. I really like the idea of cutting barnacles health down.. does anyone else agree that it takes too much ammo to kill them?

I always make a point of playing any new game or mod on the normal difficulty. I actually never had any intention of changing that until I found out that the assassins from half life get invisibility while not moving on hard difficulty. Now I plan on eventually playing through all the steam games on the higher difficulties.
That's the type of thing I really enjoy; when changing the difficulty actually changes how enemies act and what abilities you're facing up against, and not just simply having them do and take more damage before dying. That's simply frustrating.

I tried that with a mod, Afraid of Monsters, and boy it does make a difference. First time, was on Medium, as I usually play almost any new game or mod with this difficulty, and then changed to Easy, just for the fun, and then to hard again, it was almost not possible to get past the first level on the most difficult setting, the monsters did a real big damage, and the ammo and other resources really were limited.
