  1. Phillip says Play It!

This is the first Portal map I have played in probably a year and I LOVED it. The reason I loved it was because at no time was any particular jump too hard. The ability to beat the map came from being able to solve the puzzle, not some convoluted jumping maze.

Apparently this is a first map and I applaud the author, he definitely has skill and I will play whatever he makes unless if decides to make those jumping maze previously mentioned.

Highly recommend for all Portal players, even bad ones like me.

    Enjoy.

Good news everyone, a Portal map that is fun to play!

  2. Play It Now!

This is really well-made. I don’t buy it for a second that this is a first map. The mapper realizes that texture alignment is important in Portal, the stairs have playerclips on them and everything is so well made it cannot be a first map.

The puzzles required a lot of thinking but it wasn’t overwhelming. I think the difficulty was pretty much spot-on. Not hard enough to make you rage but difficult enough to give a sense of accomplishment after completing them.

The only thing about this map that annoyed me was GLaDOS. She kept saying the same lines I’ve heard in Portal so many times that it was kind of annoying.

Overall a very enjoyable Portal experience and it’s a PIN

Brilliant puzzles. Not too hard, but requires some thinking and exploration( or at least for me it did). Some very nice ideas, sweet mapping and tons of fun. Play it and enjoy it, or you will go to android hell!!

Thanks for the comments! Just to clarify: it’s my first “Portal” map. I got into level design a few years ago.

    Play It Now!

I have played a few Portal add-ons and they often rely on extremely difficult jumps and/or split-second timing. This map does not indulge in such trickery – it requires careful thought but no finger-breaking dexterity. I really enjoyed it!

  6. Great Portal map! A refreshing change from all the jumping puzzles, its nice to get to use my brain once in a while.

I found a way to get through the last bit with the turrets without pressing the button to make that platform come out. :D http://i685.photobucket.com/albums/vv216/DaFatCat/portalmap.png

I dont usually go for portal maps
Most are either too difficult, use the same exhausted puzzle mechanics again and again, or simply fail to capture the essence and atmosphere of the first portal

This map is not one of those maps

The visuals are stunning, the puzzles are easy enough to be fun, yet hard enough to also be challenging (and in the good way).
Even if you are not really a player of portal maps, this is one you cannot afford to miss.

  8. Personal Favourite

Really really enjoyed it — I felt like I had somehow forgotten to do this map my first time through Portal; it just perfectly matches the tone of the Valve maps.

Great balance of puzzle to reward; it gave me a good dose of both being stumped and then getting the reward of feeling clever when I figured it out, haha.

You are a genius mapper. Difficult but not impossible, extremly various situations. I was pleased from the beginning to the end. And also, not too long and not too short… Sweet!

    Play It Now!

I timed myself, just for the hell of it; less than 20 minutes from beginning to end on my first play through, no cheats, no deaths. I suppose that comes out to a little under 5 minutes per map, so that’s really not too bad.
With all the heaping praise about how this map is “not too difficult” it feels a little disconcerting for those of us who actually WANT a little challenge in our puzzles, but I really can’t find fault with any of the maps. They were well designed, didn’t have areas so cut off that it gave you a headache trying to orient yourself, and differing textures were well used to keep the scenery interesting despite its limited spectrum. Yet I still had to think my way through, though in many cases I actually OVER complicated the puzzles by expecting more of the buttons to be timers when pushed instead of just simply staying on.
The only real complaint I can offer is that the maps felt a little too dark at times, and it seemed like the crosshair got turned off for some reason (or never got turned on) which made it a little harder to keep track of which portal I had just used. The rehash of GlaDOS lines was a bit stale, but it’s not like this was a full scale mod, so you work with what you have.
I still think that there are a few other portal maps that deserve to be on PlanetPhillip just as much as this one, but I certainly wasn’t disappointed.

  11. I have yet to finish it after 2 days… o.o There are parts which appear to challenge me way more than it should, timing/leaps, too short jumps that always kill me… I’m trying, really trying, to get this done without cheats. :/

You may actually be over-complicating things. I can’t remember ever NEEDING to employ any of the tactics you mentioned in order to solve any of the puzzles. Basically just explore around, press whatever buttons you can in order to figure out what they do, and then work from there.

I don’t think there’s ever a case where a button is timed or that you can’t immediately see what pressing a button accomplishes or that pressing a button is actually a step backward solving the map. There is actually very little velocity related portaling, and only one case that I can think of that could reasonably result in your death if you messed up.

      • No, this is with the open/close emancipation grid puzzle. With the unstationary platforms going through them. >_> You’re right I’m probably overthinking, but … nnngggg. Puzzles … hard… brain… splody.

    Play It Now!

A great example of a classic Portal map; fun to play, puzzle solving using the rocket turret, and puzzle/jump difficulty level of the original game. However, it lacks some of the elements that would make it a PF for me; longer jumps, puzzles solving that takes you into the bowels of Aperture Laboratories, and more ways to die.

  13. Play It Now!

very impressive portal mapping. Although the fourth area with turrets was much easier, it was still nice because it made me feel like I was playing an action game suddenly. :)

This is especially fun to play coming on the heels of the E3 Portal 2 trailer debut. I am going to go play through Portal, Portal Prelude, and Hen’s Portal TFV map pack now. :)

Keep up the good work, mapper, and try incorporating more foliage and decay next time. :) :) :)

Based on what we’ve seen for Portal 2 so far, I’m very much looking forward to making some maps for it!

  15. Play It Now!

Okay, I finally managed to finish this… I don’t really know why I was having such trouble with it, but I did. The third portion, I will admit, I noclipped through to see what needed to be where, and finally got through it.

I liked the last bit the most, I think.

The second room… oi. I believe I haphazardly fumbled around for a solution and finally got that darn energy pellet into its holder by accident… :) Satisfying none the less. I liked the layout of that room a lot, though.

Very nice work, all around. Even though I struggled with it, I think most others didn’t, and I still had fun anyway.

Well what can I dissert about this little guy … Technology FTW ! Did you ever played a map that has sooo many intersections and colorful playthrough like this one ? I’ll be damned before I can even get this mod ! Downloading now ..

      Personal Favourite

My personal favourite of most Portal maps. I appreciate silentious atmospheres, what I enjoy the most is the continuous use of the Portal Gun to achieve the objective like that. I don’t hope many more to come out as such, but this better be good. ddd

    Play It Later

It was nice, well worth playing, and the puzzles were actual puzzles you need to think a bit about, its quite good as far as portal maps go, but I got through it relatively quickly and easily, I wouldn’t say its worth droping what your doing right now to go play. Do play it though, when you have nothing better to be doing :)

  18. Personal Favourite

    Some interesting details:

    SPOILERS

    Brilliant ones
    - in the second chamber, plasma ball trapped behind the glass creates sparks falling all the way down.. great enrichment of scenery
    - in the third chamber, the static platforms that are about to be moving later are positioned such that they help navigate the level most conveniently and prevent falls into sludge, great thinking
    - the slab that pushes down the final “boss” turret also becomes a portal jump platform.. example of effective design
    - music in every chamber, great!

    minor complaints
    - Companion cube is usually supposed to be carried to the end of the level. I did some useless portal tricks to rescue it from the final button only to find out it will get emancipated anyway. There is glass to notice it though so no biggie :)
    - Glados speech is very classic. She has some interesting things to say that aren’t so used up already..

    Anyway, great work Amndragon
    Keep it up

  19. I just downloaded Portal for Mac when steam opened the floodgates about a month ago. Will your mod work on Mac? Yes…go ahead PC fanboys…I KNOW gaming is better on PCs :-)

I actually don’t know :O That would be great to find out. You can be the guinea pig!

  20. Great map with a perfect name. The solutions were not obvious, but were doable, and this is exactly what I like with a portal map.
