CSS Sci-Fi Version 2 – Half-life 2

Single Player First Person Shooter Maps and Mods for Half Life 1, 2 and 3
Update

Version 2.1 has been released! It contains 12 custom maps with scripts, plus scripts for 15 of the original CS:S maps. Includes latest full version of SMOD and the SMOD configuration utility.

Key Changes
  • Added “Campaign Mode” to the retail and custom map packs. All 27 maps can now be played as a 12 or 15 map campaign. Players can also select “Round Mode” in the SMOD Configuration Utility, which reloads the current map when the objectives are complete.
  • Upgraded SMOD to 39D2. This adds four new bullet time modes which can be enabled using the SMOD Configuration Utility.
  • Fixed scripting problems in several maps which could cause issues if the game is loaded from a save.
  • Enhanced performance of some maps and improved AI behaviour in many maps.
  • Remade DE_Train with new goals.
  • Created new node graphs for Port, Nuke, Militia and Beirut, which give improved AI behaviour.
  • Changed AI behaviour so that if only one enemy remains it will stop moving around the map. This makes it easier for the player to find and eliminate.
  • Changed player weapons so that the player starts with more effective weapons in harder missions.
  • On screen text has been cleaned up.
  • Fixed missing sound references for snow footsteps and nightvision.
  • Fixed missing antlions in Coast levels.
  • Changed shield rules so that more NPCs have a chance to use facemasks and riot shields.
  • Added soundscapes to some custom levels which were previously silent.
  • Added Lost Coast. Players can now revisit Lost Coast with all the benefits of SMOD!

Version 2.1 Patch

Single Player First Person Shooter Maps and Mods for Half-Life 1, 2 and Episodes 1, 2 and 3
Patches previous CSS SCI FI version 2.0 to 2.1. All players using the 2.0 version should download and install this patch. Players new to the game should use the CSS SCI FI 2.1 full installer above.

Overview

CSS SCI FI is a single player Half-Life 2 modification for SMOD. Maps from Counter Strike: Source are used as the setting for intense “Counter Combine” action. CSS SCI FI mixes random generation of enemies and resources with map-specific scripting to create a fully realised and readily replayable game.

The latest CSS SCI FI 2.0 release contains scripts which enable SMOD to be used to play 12 custom maps, in addition to the 15 original Counter-Strike: Source maps. All custom maps are unmodified and installed to your Counter Strike: Source maps folder in their original state, including bot navs and author documentation. With one installation you can play each map in three ways: against humans online, against bots in Counter Strike: Source, or against HL2 AI in SMOD.

Gameplay

Within each map the player spawns with a randomly selected and armed team of fellow citizens, who are optionally assisted by Alyx, Barney and a further randomly selected ally. These forces are pitted against a fixed number of Combine, whose type and armament is also randomly determined. Between the two forces is a random assortment of zombies and autonomous Combine weapons. The goal of the player is to eliminate all of the Combine forces, or to rescue at least one hostage alive, depending on the type of map. In CSS SCI FI 2.0, the player is given additional tasks, such as to find a particular weapon, eliminate a specific NPC, or protect an NPC from death.

In addition to allies and enemies, maps contain a randomly determined number of resources held in crates, which the player will need to survive and win the game. Randomly generated props appropriate to the theme of the map are also seeded through the map in order to provide additional interest and challenge.

Players will also face enemies including helicopters, gunships, apcs and other challenges, whose behaviour is tightly controlled through scripting in order to produce a challenging yet realistic gameplay experience.

Features
  • 27 hand scripted maps. Over 8 hours of single player combat, and that’s just to play each one once.
  • Available in two versions: CSS SCI FI 1.5 which contains only the original Counter-Strike: Source maps, and CSS SCI FI 2.0, which adds 12 custom user made maps, including the popular DE_Nightfever and CS_Beirut_HDR. Custom maps are installed to the cstrike/maps folder so they can be played in Counter-Strike: Source or SMOD with no moving of files.
  • Includes SMOD 39B2. No need for additional downloads.
  • Includes the SMOD Configuration Utility, which provides clear descriptions of game options, including difficulty, screen effects, health regeneration, weapon inventory and a choice of allies with no hand editing of files.
  • Several mission types: Counter Combine, Hostage Rescue, Smash and Grab, Assassination, Protection and Counter Insurgency. Includes many enemies not seen in HL2, such as stalkers, houndeyes, enemy citizens and slave Vortigaunts.

  1. @Kurgan – err…yes 4 gigs should do the job. Can’t think of what else to suggest. Send me a console log file if you wish to explore this further – see item 7 in “Gameplay Issues” from the FAQ. Can’t promise I can do anything about it, but this will at least show what is going on.

In other news, I just added up the download total since the 2.1 version was released last October across all of the mirrors that I know about: 65,347 in total to date, and still growing. I must get around to making another pack one of these days.

  2. Question:: I have Counter Strike and Counter Strike Condition Zero both installed. Both are SP, do I have to pay Steam $20.00 for Counter Strike Source for MP in order to play this? Seems a little pointless as I don’t play MP games and Source would never be played. Will the other two sp versions suffice? Is this and the one before it worth the 20?

  3. Fitzroy_doll, real good so far. I’m on the 3rd map I think. I had it set for all weapons and used impulse 101 just to try out all these wild weapons-lots of fun for sure. But now I want to make it more challenging. I’ve been coasting through using the flamethrower alot and thats way too easy-lol-cooking the enemy is not really precson fighting. Takes no skill at all-just point and cook. So, now to reset the weapons and the other items, do I wait until the current map is done then make the change? I couldn’t really tell what the default level is for the weapons. Maybe just set it like HL2? I also had trouble chasing down the last man standing. Took me awhile as he was up a ladder kind of hiding out of sight. This mod is done with alot of skill-it shows!-thanks

  4. This is a very well made mod and the artwork is fantastic. The maps are full of run and gun action and that’s just about all this is. As much as I like the fighting I also like puzzles and something to stimulate my gray matter more. This mod is near perfect for it’s style. If you like Counter Strike you will love this. Personally I’m not a fan of that style game play. I prefer the puzzle/fighting type mods more.So if you like all fighting with no conversations or thinking, then this is your game and you should Play It Now- If you like to be stumped and stuck at times and want more of a mental challenge then Play It Later

  5. Hi everyone!

Just stopping by to update you on the progress of this mod. After almost 2 years in hiatus, I am now very close to re-releasing an all new and improved CSS SCI FI final. I currently estimate there are 2 months of development remaining, depending on feedback from testers.

Some information about the coming release:

-Will use resources from HL2 and CS:S only (there were some reports of mounting errors with the HL2DM and Lost Coast content, so it has been dropped).
-It will be fully standalone and independent of SMOD (own SourceMods folder, no need for additional downloads – not that there was in the current version, but many people did not read the documentation and were confused by this).
-It will feature 42 unique missions, including all 18 of the CS:S retail maps, plus 24 custom maps from the very best designers in the CS:S community. Given the size of the final package (~400 mb), I will also be making available a “demo” version, which will have all the features of the full version but will include only the missions which take place in the retail maps. This version will be about 60mb.
-Will include a “Mission Hub” which will serve as a training area and mission selection system, for those of you who want to play one map at a time (and to allow you to get the desire to see all the guns out of your system before you get into the missions themselves).

A few new features directly suggested by the comments above:
-The configuration utility will now remember your previous settings.
-In only 4 of the 42 missions do you now need to kill every combine, thus removing the apparent irritation of tracking down the last man standing (and even in these cases, he’ll find you long before you begin to think of looking for him). The structure of most missions is now that of a loop, in which you must get in, accomplish one or more goals (plant a bomb, rescue a hostage, destroy a dangerous enemy, assassinate a specific character), then get out. Every mission, including those you have seen before in earlier versions, has been re-written from scratch.
-Maps have been cleaned up and made more focused. Random events have been tightened so that there is still variation, but each mission has a specific character.
-The maps are much more interactive – hidden buttons that must be pressed to open doors, secret weapons, unexpected allies and more use of vehicles.
-Overpowered and unbalanced weapons such as the flamethrower have been completely removed from the game. Some heavy weapons remain, but only as special bonuses in specific maps.
-The HL2 single player campaign has been dropped. This cuts down on the amount of disk space used by the mod, and focuses players specifically on the CS:S campaign maps. Like the scissors and lightstick, if you want these features you are encouraged to play vanilla SMOD, which is now a completely different game.
-Game performance is now greatly improved. Loading times are now a fraction of their previous values (around 45 seconds per map – quick!). Loading from saves now takes between 10 and 20 seconds, if not shorter.
Those of you that were having trouble with Nuke and Militia should have no difficulty in the new version.
All in game stutter caused by loading unexpected content have been removed, without any penalty to loading times.
-In game text is now very specific about your goals and objectives, where to find things and what to do when you get there. No more wandering around shooting things blindly.
-A new title. It will still be known as CSS SCI FI 3.0 final (as this is used throughout the coding for the mod), but if inspiration strikes there will be a new headline. Like this: “*Something*: CSS SCI FI 3.0″. Suggestions welcome.

All of the above features are now complete and there remain only a few more things to do before it can go to testers. If you want to participate in the testing programme, please drop me a line at antiscope @ gmail . com

If you have a talent for making in-game videos please do get in touch as I’ll be needing some promotional gameplay footage and don’t have much experience in this area myself.

That’s it for now. Stay tuned to PlanetPhillip for more updates!
