February 2008 Screenshot Competition

Update

The voting is over and the winner is…..Your Evil Twin. Congratulations to him and a big thank you to all who entered and voted. I would also like to thank A I, a regular reader, for kindly supplying the Halo prize.

This will probably be the last competition for a while. I want to be able to offer a really cool prize before I start another one.

All entries have been processed and are displayed below. I have chosen to allow PP readers to be the judge and ask you to vote. Please choose you favourite explosion screenshot.

I decided to accept only one image from each entrant otherwise we would have about 30 screenshots with most of them almost exactly the same.

Please accept my apologies for the delay, this was due to problems opening one of the entries. I felt it was better to delay than have the vote without the entry, it didn’t seem fair.

Is Episode 1 to be given over Steam? Because I don’t think you can send it to someone who already has it. I sent it to a friend on the basis that he would send it back when he bought The Orange Box but since I already had it, Steam wouldn’t let him.

You could get around this by allowing the winner to designate a receiver for the game, so you could send it directly to them.

Anyways, interesting competition! Might give it a bash if I find time.

Sounds interesting, but how different can explosions really be? Are you looking for increasingly large explosions, or stylistic ones? And do you allow editing?

Yes, but not Photoshopping in the sense of “real” editing. Just to adjust lighting etc.

Correct. It has to be a normal SP map or mod.

Yes, I might but then I would be setting a precedent and normal players wouldn’t have a chance to win.

i’m also glad that Gmod can’t be used for this, because that wouldn’t be fair. now you have to take at the right time the screenshot, and in Gmod you could set it all up just like you want it, (not that i ever used Gmod, but i know what it does).
i will see if i can come up with some nice screens, and i also hope with you Phillip that people will join this competition, sorry i didn’t join the last one.
i also like great explosions, so i hope we will see a lot of nice BOOMINGS !!!!

wow, that’s bad indeed. and i have to admit, i also didn;t sent in a picture. don’t know what it is, because i could be able to make one in 10 min i gess, but, i forget to do so everytime, untill i see this thread here again, and then i think; sh*t, that’s true, i still need to make one.
will try to do so today, and come on guys, lets help Phillip with this, he gives us this great site, the least we can do is joining these things, right?

I must apologize to you Phillip as I have just installed some new recoring software in the last month and learning to use it… Finally… And have been laying down guitar (and other) tracks in any spare time I might have. Thouroughly enjoying it in a huge way too. To any musicians and/or producers out there, I highly recommend Sonars line of products for computer recording.Great stuff!!!!
None the less I am trying to get some playing…er should I say “gaming” time in now. So we will see if I can capture anything spectacular to send in for you.

well, let me start with apolotiacing to Phillip for NOT sending a screen while i promised to do so. and my reason for this, that i am to bussy with mapping the new sp-mod is ofcourse a lame excuse. but, its the only one i have, i should have taken an hour to make also a screen.
still am i glad that at least 9 people did, and its already clear who won. nr 9, it has also my vote, a second is nr 2. the others where also nice, only the one with the 2 headcrabs and the 2 cut in half zombies is a strange one, because there is no explosion at all. still, that one was also great just like the others.

Yes, it is strange but I included it because I felt it had an interesting symmetry.

I think this is what happens when you let the striders destroy the base at the end of Ep2. I never let it happen, but I should probably let it go sometime to get the experience.

I can see why people are voting for #9: very visible detail of lots of objects being hurtled through the air. Nice lighting, good composition / cropping.

By the way, it would be interesting to have each screenshot labeled as to what mod it came from.

PP, after changing the rules a bit (one entry per person), it would have been good to give the entrants notice and let us decide which one to submit.
Not a big deal though.

Yes, you are right and I apologize. I made the decision to not contact people because things were delay enough as it was and waiting for 9 people to reply might have taken too long.

I’ll think more carefully about any future rules of competitions.

Tags are descriptive words or phrases associated with Half-Life maps and mods. They allow players to quickly find exactly the type of game element they enjoy the most.

Every reader can add tags to maps and mods and I encourage you to do so.

Please visit the Tag Guide for detailed information.

Every map and mods has a rating. This is a number between 1 and 5. By adding a rating to each map or mod you have played you help identify the Best Releases for each game.

It takes less than a second to do and is very intuitive.

Commenting on maps and mods allows you to express your thoughts in a more personal way than by adding only a Recommendation image.

Please use the comments to ask and answer questions, write reviews, make observations and generally chat about mods.

So Much For Freeman is a Half-Life 2 map that hasn't recived enough attention. It's not very long but it packs some great design and even a story. With plenty of Play It Now! recommendation images it really deserves to be played by everyone.

Welcome to the PlanetPhillip Introduction Tour

This brief tour will highlight some of the main areas of the site and how you can get the most from your visit.

The Index Page
Firstly let's look at the index page. At the top of the page is the menu. It lists the most important pages on the site. Most of these are discussed in the tour.

You will also notice the search bar. Simply type in your search term and press return/enter. The results will be displayed on a new page.

Under this is the Daily Half-Life 2 Image. Each day I change the image to a new screenshot. The images follow the player from the very first moment the game starts to the end. By clicking the image you will visit the full size image.

Under that is a set of links to view maps and mods for each of the main games covered by the site.

Let us now look at the main post area. Here you will see the 6 most recent posts. If it is a map or mod you will notice the relevant game logo on the left. It will also display a short introduction about the map or mod.

Below this is the navigation footer, which is discussed on the next page of the tour.

The Footer
This is the navigation footer and contains plenty of links to various pages of the site. The footer is in constant development and as such I will only discuss the main sections.

Currently
This section displays the current weekly poll, an information graphic and some other topical information notice.

Activity
This section displays the latest posts, comments and forum threads.

Categories
This section displays the various categories that posts are categorized in.

Interact
This section displays details about Tagging, Rating and Commenting on the site.

Tags
This section displays the current list of tags used on the site. Perfect for finding mods with elements you like.

Official
This section displays links to important areas and shows other details about the site.

The next page of the tour discusses the Highest Rated page.

The Highest Rated
This page displays the highest rated maps and mods for Half-Life 1 and Half-Life 2. Each map and mod requires a minimum of 5 votes before it is displayed.

Please Rate!
This page will only be useful when hundreds of readers have rated the maps and mods. I therefore urge you to rate the mods, even the older ones!

Only HL1 and HL2?
Due to the lack of maps and mods for Episodes 1 and 2 they are not listed here but if enough of them are released I will add them.

No Other Games?
Correct! I am only accepting ratings for the games listed on this page.

The Dated Archives
This page displays every single post in chronological order, starting from the most recent. Only the title is displayed, which is a link to the full article.

Monthly Header
By clicking on the monthly title you will be taken to a page that displays the excerpts of each post for the entire month.

Released or Published?
The dates relate to the date the map or mod was published on the site NOT the date it was actually released.

Wrong!
Due to the large amount of maps and mods that still require updating, many are dated earlier than their actual release. This will eventually be corrected.

The next page of the tour discusses a mod page in detail.

A Mod in Detail
This part of the tour looks at a mod page in detail. Not all mod or map pages have same layout but all are being updated to match this layout.

About or Story
At the top is a graphic taken from one of the screenshots, underneath this is either the basic story or some information about the mod.

Basic Details
The section lists the basic details of the mod, including Name, Filename, Author and original Release Date.

Files
The file mirrors follow the basic file details, with the recommended FileFront server displayed first, with any subsequent mirrors listed afterwards.

Screenshots
The last section is the collection of screenshots which open with some clever javascript to overlay the open page.

Other Sections?
Occasionally there are other sections, including Features List, Installation Instructions, International Coverage, Videos, Panoramic Screenshots and Resource Links.

The next page of the tour discusses the forum.

The Forum
Like most websites nowadays PlanetPhillip has a forum. It generally has one or two new threads per day, each created by PP readers.

Sections
The forum is separated into various sections to allow better organization and ease of use.

Strict Control
As with the main site, the language allowed is quite strict compared to other sites. Swearing is discouraged and no links to inappropriate sites are allowed.

You Create The Topics
The big difference between the main site and the forum is that YOU can create the threads on the forum. You can chat about anything you want, be it game related or the weather.

No Maps and Mods
One rule I am quite strict about is that of not discussing maps and mods on the forum if they have an entry on the main site. I do this because I don't want to split information for other readers.
