This is an absolutely fantastic mod. It has a couple of little bugs and some very minor issues (some lighting stuff) but really, it’s without doubt my favourite Portal mod. So, why isn’t it a “personal favourite” then you ask, we’ll come to that.
Considering this is a one man project I am very impressed. There’s plenty of gameplay here, took me at least 4 hours to play, although I am very slow. It’s starts almost like Portal, in that it’s probably possible to play this mod without ever playing Portal. What I mean is that each technique is “shown” to you via very simple chambers.
I’m not suggesting that was the author’s intention but that’s how it seems to me.
Once you get past the simple chambers, the puzzles became more interesting and I was eager to find out what was next, there were some wonderful chambers and nothing required difficult jumps.
That is until chamber 29. Up until then I had high hopes that I would be able to complete this mod. This changed when I was faced with 29. I don’t have a problem per se with hard chambers. I mean, I’m not a good player and can’t beat the hard ones. My problem here is that the difficulty levels seemed to take a huge jump, pardon the pun. Even noclipping I was a little confused. The same goes for chamber 30, which I am sure I missed stuff. I might, and I stress might, go back and have another try but now that I know where to go, I will always feel as though I cheated.
I feel the author “cheated” me by luring into a false sense of belief that if I could finish Portal I could finish this, and unless I am mistaken, I don’t believe that’s the case.
There will be some for whom this mod is too easy, and that’s one of the inherent problems of making a portal mod; not being able to vary the degree of difficulty for each player.
So, I stopped playing the mod with a slightly bad taste in my mouth, which is why it didn’t get the “Personal Favourite” recommendation.
The website is another great creation, so be sure to visit it.
In conclusion, if the author doesn’t end up working in the game industry I will be surprised because he has managed to create a thoughtful and well produced mod. I look forward to playing more of his work.
I’m hoping to get an interview with hi, so stay tuned.

No I don’t like the BnW thumbnails
Just sayin’
Going to play this map then leave a review, back in a bit!
10th August 2010
Also, please could you upload a .zip of it rather than a 7z?
I don’t particularly want to install another program on my computer
Thanks
10th August 2010
No, sorry. I use 7zip because it offers the best compression method and when I have to spend a lot of time uploading files I want the fastest method. Whilst I understand your not wanting to install more software on a PC than needed, it opens every compression format I know, so it’s a very useful application. Yes, zip is natively supported but in some cases it’s 50% bigger. Without wanting to seem rude, it’s either use 7zip or another application that opens 7z files, or not use the download of the site.

Actually neither do I, but in reality the colour ones weren’t working, so I had to upload something. I’ll try and upload the colour ones tomorrow.
11th August 2010
Color thumbnails are way better. For a long time I thought this was some kind of wacky Portal noir.
11th August 2010
I just beat the game. It’s all possible, just very big pains in the ass trying to figure out what you’re supposed to do. It is possible that I got past some sections through nonstandard solutions, but it was definitely fun.
I’ll give a more in depth review tomorrow or something, this definitely deserves it.
11th August 2010
This was a refreshingly fun portal mod. I liked how it started out simple and gradually got harder, giving you time to adapt to the increasing difficulty of the puzzles. The only negative things I would have to say are that some puzzles are just a real pain in the ass to complete and the brown metal tile texture was a bit overused. Other than that it was a fantastic portal mod, and I must say it’s about time another fun Portal mod came out.

Your review of this mod sums up my feelings about Portal mods in general, Phillip. I’ve lost count of the maps/mods I started but gave up on when they went beyond my abilities to fathom or execute. It’s an inherent problem with puzzle games, I guess, when the creator doesn’t have access to the sort of game testing that Valve (for instance) have. I doubt I’ll complete this (I never cheat) but such a positive review demands I give it a go!
11th August 2010
Yes, you definitely should play it, just expect the last two chambers to be pretty tough for normal players.

Interesting thought, a mod in Black and White… hmmm
11th August 2010
Hollow Moon might interest you. Also, Blaze Bolden was originally planned as a black and white mod.

nice plug lol

Gotta take every opportunity to spread the word.
11th August 2010
Very awesome mod, I agree with most of what Phillip said. However the ending was weak… Felt rather as if the author wants to finish something…
11th August 2010
Would be a PF if not for (what I assume to be) the end fight
I got stuck, and utterly frustrated I ragequitted
That being said, this mod is a fantastic addition to the number of portal mods out there, boasting clever puzzles, excellent visuals and a decent plotline. The puzzles were clever, and only a few were frustrating.
What are you doing? Drop that and download this!

Damn I fail at spoiler tags, could someone tell me how to edit a post?
12th August 2010
Step 1: Beg Phillip to edit your post
Step 2: ???
Step 3: PROFIT

General Hint:
In case you’re stuck on the specific steps:
14th August 2010
I will have to start by saying this is one of the hardest mods I have ever played for Portal. The only cons that I found on this incredible mod is that the brownish metal texture was really too much overused, and some of the puzzles at later phases made me get really angry, but this gave me such a sense of completion.
If I could define Gamma Energy is that it’s a Portal mod with a brain- I have seen lots of Portal mods that forced me to think with Portals, this expanded beyond the think with Portals technique and made us think with cubes and more. The puzzles made you crack your mind with their sick and twisted architecture.
The architecture in this mod, since I mentioned it, it’s really different from a more recent mod which I also voted a Play it Now, Factum Solus (is that right?). While on FS the architecture is more open, more innovative, the architecture here is often more claustrophobic, more challenging.
Props go to the Five Cubes puzzle:
The new features such as buttons that do different stuff, action and consequence, the laser wall mixed with old gold like the cube, the good ol’ energy ball and the portal gun makes this mod crack your mind and totally worth your while.
Gamma Energy: now you are really, seriously, for real, thinking with Portals.

This was an excellent map pack. I really liked the new mechanics.
PRO: Eexcellent progression from very easy to very hard. The last few chambers contained some of the most intelligent puzzles I have ever worked through. I am having a lot of fun dealing with the advanced chambers as well.
CON: I thought the “story” was practically non-existant. There was no specific reason for me to be sick. The final battle also stank and was more of a chore than a fun fight. Finally, the ending in general was anti-climatic.
Overall, this is well worth the download…especially for the more difficult chambers and all the advanced chambers.
27th August 2010
I must admit to noclipping through a few of the more annoying jumping sections or speed-required sections (think-fast’s turret spam if you fail area and disorientating bits where you have to do alot of jump increasing portals with a tiny starting distance).
6th September 2010
PLAY IT NOW
goodies
+ high production value
+ atmosphere and architecture
+ impressive lenght
+ clever puzzles (cube and barrier at the beginning, chamber 14, jumping on cubes above the laser floor, plasma ball hell, chambers 28,29,30)
cons
- some overly complicated puzzles seemed lacking inspiration (many buttons and many boxes and crossroads of blue/yellow lines)
- puzzle in ‘you have to break the glass’ where you have to break the glass with exit? sign got broken when the sign fell on the dark ground in the adjacent room where portal couldnt be placed and sign was unmovable otherwise (or I was doing something wrong)
- puzzles with balls and tubes were a bit meh.. potential was there but something was missing. the final one in chamber 29 was also very frustrating a gimmicky.
- the part after the chambers was even more boring than in original portal and very very brown. also the barrels werent always working as intended (explosion sometimes didnt break the glass etc)
- final battle was a chore and ended buggy
impressive mod overall, especially for a one man project
thumbs up!

Mega interesting mod!
18th September 2010
Great mod really makes you think but I have been stuck on 28 for 3 days! now, got the cube to the main area of the level and can put it on the big button to open the door but I just cannot get enough velocity to make it over to the platform, also can’t work out what the samll button in the main area is for, it tips the big button and the panel but I shuts any portal when it does so. help
20th November 2010
My favorite Portal mod so far… It is accessible an starts off easy enough! Further on is becomes quite challenging, but still fun to play. Only the last two-three levels are a bit too confusing for my taste. Still, highly recommended!
5th July 2011
This is definitely my favourite Portal 1 map that I have played. I like a good long mod because it means it can hold a great variety of puzzles, which was great. The behind-the-scenes areas were excellent, but so was pretty much everything. I really liked how it used the mechanics from Portal in novel ways, which kept it fresh and definitely very interesting. Go and play this now if you haven’t already!
