Well this has been a while in the making and for those devoted fans that waited, they won’t be too disappointed. If you are a avid and active member in the HL custom community, there is nothing too new or exciting about this package. However if you are new, or brand new, or just read my tutorials on models, this is a good starter package for Half Life.
Models:
It contains all those odd and end models that are in small packs as well as monsters, NPC’s and misc models. It contains the basic HD content where nothing else exists. They are certainly all a step above the default and HD Pack models, but at the same time. Nothing jaw-droppingly special. That being said, its a very complete pack and ALMOST feels like all the models actually belong in the game. When I talk about this I mean the weapons. The pack features great weapon models from Toadie and Hawk, two great customizers from the HIT community. But it also features some HD models which can’t compare to the high end quality of the HIT releases.
One of the weapon models I can’t stand is the shotgun. I just don’t like the combination of origins and animations. It doesn’t look right and it makes the sleeve look very awkward. The tripmine and hand grenade are also HD content, which is still better than the default, can’t hold up against the greater content of the pack. Also the RPG rocket model in the world doesn’t match the one in the v model, but that’s incredibly minor. I was also not happy to see the 9mmhandgun using default animations. One would think they could find a custom pair to spruce up the gameplay more. But all in all good choices of models and very complete feeling.
Sounds:
The sounds are nothing to complain about, but nothing to praise except for the ones that accompany toadies animations. The rest are from the HD pack yet again.
Sprites:
Nice setup. No complaints here

This is probably going to sound dumb, but I have no clue how to install this pack. It has no installation instructions. All of the contents apparently go into 3 folders: sound, sprites, and models. Unfortunately for me, I have a full HL Generation Pack 3 installation, i.e. including HL GOTY, Blue Shift, Counter Strike, Opposing Force, and Team Fortress. Perusing my disk I find several possible places where the contents of these folders might go. I was guessing they go into the ‘valve’ folder, but that can’t be correct because the contents of the existing sound, models, and sprites folders don’t seem at all consistent with this pack (in either content or scope). For example, the pack contains more model files than I can find anywhere on my installation. (I am assuming that this replaces existing stuff.) So, anyway, I could use a nice detailed installation guide if anyone wants to help.
Also does this pack affect (change or interfere with) the other expansions like Blue Shift?

Hey Michael
I am assuming you do not own steam. If I’m wrong correct me.
Your directory structure depending on your harddrive will look something like:
C:/Sierra/Half-Life/
I havent used an old install in ages, but you want to extract/drag and drop the archive into the same directory as the one that contains the folders: maps, and the file halflife.wad
Now if thats just the Half-Life dir or the the valve dir, I can’t remember but look for the halflife.wad, it goes into the same directory.
03 December 2006 at 9:36 pm
Thanks for the prompt response. That gets me closer but I am still not completely sure.
First, I do have an old (pre-steam) installation. My ‘valve’ folder contains the halflife.wad file. It contains the models, sound, and sprites folders, plus a lot more. Are you saying that I should preserve your pack’s file structure so that I will get a new subfolder ‘valve/hl-gmans-gold-model-pack’. If so, how do I activate your pack, i.e. with a command-line entry or somesuch?
03 December 2006 at 9:49 pm
I was not aware that the directory structure had change, shame on you Phillip for changing it
Since I don’t have that archive, what you need to do, is get the models sounds and sprites folders from the archive, by either drag and drop or extracting it somewhere and copy and pasting them into the same directory as your halflife.wad.
So I guess to answer the question, DO NOT preserve the structure. As for activation, you don’t it does it all on its own. And to answer an older question you had, this only will affect HL not any other mod unless they share the same files.

So by installing this mod it will/willnot affect other mods I run on HL1?? I have installed the HiDef files from my Blushift disc in the past, and what happened was the mods wouldn’t run! I’m from the old school and don’t use the HL1 source from Steam, mine is strickly Sierra\Half-Life!
04 December 2006 at 3:49 am
You’ll be fine, its not like you are going to void a warranty or something.
04 December 2006 at 4:04 am
Who’s worried about a warranty?? Never have, never will! I only wanted to know if it will affect my Vannila HL1?
04 December 2006 at 4:40 am
It shouldn’t affect anything in your HL1. You’ll be able to run mods as usual.
04 December 2006 at 4:44 am
I just got done DLing this mod, I use WinRaR for extraction, I got the message, in the folder Models\Hgrunt.mdl the file is corrupted! Tried it 3 times, same result!
04 December 2006 at 5:09 am
I don’t know why my last comment didn’t display shoulda been #10 but the file that is on Filecloud has a corrupt file, models\hgrunt.mdl I tested the archive 3 times with the same result! I just DL’ed the same file from the home page Unrared good! I use the newest version of WinRaR!
04 December 2006 at 6:33 am
AI you are fine and chill out, he only said nothing will change so its not like its a warranty deal or something
04 December 2006 at 10:58 am
I didn’t.

That snark is the most realistic snark i’v ever seen…
Cute.
As per the shotgun, one will notice that it is the only one that extends from the bottem of the screen, as opposed to the usual bottom left. Avid gun-shooters will also note that, because of this, the shotgun is the only gun with a stock that is being held up to the shoulder. Thus, it is possibly the one gun that Gordon “VoIP me, baby” Freeman knows how to actually use.
The changing of the stance is awkward, but it does make some kind of sense…
Do note that there are more weapon models that you may download! Check places like:
hl2files.com and http://www.geocities.com/weaponworkshop/main.html
for other options. Most of the links don’t work on the weaponworkshop, but alot do.
04 December 2006 at 3:11 pm
Or you could just go to my website, that has working links and higher quality replacements, better organized and updated often. Click my name to go there.
Is anybody else having a problem with the hgrunt like Anonymous?
04 December 2006 at 3:41 pm
I’m just making alternatives, for people that can’t get to your website (Like me, for about ten minutes).
04 December 2006 at 5:32 pm
You can both relax because everything will eventually be available from PlanetPhillip anyway!!
That’s after I take over the world with my deathray. (Evil scientist laugh)
04 December 2006 at 11:01 pm
Okay, I’ve uploaded a fresh working copy. The link in the main post now points to it.
08 December 2006 at 8:45 am
FYI, I found some cool HL2 models converted to HL1 (the HL2 zombie looks great in HL1)
For more info about these models (Phillip, you can also add’em to this site) go to:
http://www.fpsbanana.com/skincats/487
08 December 2006 at 9:40 am
I’ll check them out soon. This model project is definitely going to be long term, there’s almost more models available than maps!
08 December 2006 at 8:10 pm
This is how the HL2 Zombie looks in HL1

Hi! I own Steam and my question is:Where do I drag&drop the 3 folders in the pack?
Thanks in advance!

LoneWolf
Please read my tutorial on this site for instructions. You will find the file structure to be similar just located in a different directory.
As for HL2 content, don’t post that here and don’t host or encourage it Phillip. It is an illegal activity and it would be a shame to see your website closed because of a poor choice. Valve has stated that its a retail conversion and is not allowed. You cannot assume that people that own HL1 own HL2 or vice versa.
All the communities that I belong to enforce this. If FPS Banana chooses to do a risky thing such as this, thats is their business.
09 December 2006 at 1:23 am
Well, that’s sadly true, Valve (similar to 3DRealms) does not like people to make any convertions among their games, regardless of these models being “non-profit”… So, I have to agree with Editor321 (I just wasn’t aware of Valve’s policies).
09 December 2006 at 5:32 am
I’m not sure what you guys are saying.Valve openly endorsed the mod community after HL1 and then relesed hammer to help them. Now we have the SDK available for free.how can anyone get in trouble its free. What is anyone gonna get in trouble for.Are they goona not allow people to alter things?that would kill the mod community and any retail sales that may come about from steam.I dont see what your gettting at.
09 December 2006 at 5:46 am
You don’t quite understand. The SDK DOES NOT contain Retail HL2 Content. The only HL2 content available is to those making HL2 mods, so those that have HL2 can only use it. If I own a copy of HL1, that doesn’t mean I can port HL2 content, they are considered by Valve’s Legal Department as two seperate games.
This has been discussed a million places. Its not legal. End of story.
09 December 2006 at 9:07 am
This whole blessed thread is getting alittle off track! I think most people here follow the rules sometime and DON’T need a sermon on what’s legal or what isn’t!!! Editor321 you never answered LoneWolf65s (#22) question and I never got a straight answer to #6 or #12 only beat up (in words) Now being a mildly intellegent 60 yr old, I figured it out myself! The extracted 3 folders go to the C:\Sierra\Half-Life\Valve (old style) and I do say they work very nice! Big improvement! Now when I install the same 3 folders to my Steam folder —-> Half-Life source\HL1 and try to run it, I get the message “out of Memory” so Vas ist los??
09 December 2006 at 12:18 pm
The comments are moving WAY off-topic and I will be editing-out ANYTHING not directly related to either installation or this pack’s contents.
Also the tone of some of the comments are a little aggressive and this has to stop. IF you want to help others then do it politely and if you wish to ask questions also do it politely.
I will not allow PlanetPhillip’s comments system to slip into a slanging match.
If necessary I will revert to personally approving comments BEFORE they appear, although I would rather not.
09 December 2006 at 12:28 pm
I forget to address the legal content issue.
I was unaware that VAlve had publicly stated that converting HL2 content to Hl1 was illegal, thanks for the information.
I won’t host or promote anything illegal, as Editor321 says, it would be shame to have the site closed for such a silly thing.
Doesn’t this point make Black Mesa Source illegal? Why haven’t they shut them down? I’m glad they haven’t.
Does anybody have a link to the official Valve position?

09 December 2006 at 4:47 pm
Tks.very much for your reply! Your tutorial helped me a lot and all is working great.
Have a nice day!
09 December 2006 at 5:15 pm
AI it works for me in steam.I renamed my original models folder, then dropped the 3 folders into \Steam\SteamApps\name\half-life\valve.I like the shotgun but wonder how those shells stay clipped to the side of it since 3 are upside down
09 December 2006 at 6:06 pm
Yes like I said this mod works very nice! The shot gun works and looks very good, just too bad it’s not a double barrel they are alot more destructive!! Must have a good clip to hold the shells!! I still like the “old” HL1 better and this mod does not interfer with any of the other mods like the BlueShift HiDef pak did!! I will take a look at the Steam version again, AFTER I have my coffee!!
09 December 2006 at 6:51 pm
True the model isnt double barrel but right clicking still fires 2 rounds.
15 December 2006 at 4:31 am
FYI:
I just happened to learn that Valve no longer cares about beta models. Does it mean that HL2 ported models are not illegal anymore??
Anyway, either Phillip or Editor (or anyone else) might be interested in this info.
Take a look at “FPS forums” (model releases):
http://forums.facepunchstudios.com/forumdisplay.php?f=41
Sorry if this goes off topic
