This is a 4 level map by PZ. Instructions are again written in German but playing these games, you basically know what you have to do.
However, this game plays like the original with your damage set to normal as is the enemy’s. This one doesn’t hurt as much when you get shot, and the fight is fairer for it!

There are several stages in developing map creation skills. First you learn how to use the editor, then you start learning creation of buildings and deal with lights. Then you master AI scripting, then, if necessary learn about making terrain. Finally you use all your newly aquired skills to create a complete map. First small and simple ones, later larger and more complicated ones that follow an at least rudimentary storyline.

PZ, the author of HDDL - Hinter den deutschen Linien (Behind the german lines) has more or less finished stage one of mastering map creation and obviously decided to publish a large 4-level singleplayer map. In these levels he planlessly assembled lots of features. Ammo and weapons lie around in large amounts. The enemies were distributed senselessly all over the levels without decent AI scripting. No storyline connects those levels. It’s plain shooting and being shot inside confusingly arranged areas.

I appreciate every attempt in trying to build custom maps for the public because I know how hard this is. But this map is quite boring. I have played much smaller maps that were much more fun to play than this one. There were also flaws like missing textures, “leaky” rooms, unbalanced lights or enemies that hit you by shooting through tanks and crates as if these were thin air. If PZ had put the time he used for all 4 levels into a single one this map could have been really great. But this way it can only be considered as a prematurely published demo or test map that became too large.

I’d like to state that I only express my personal opinion. Your mileage may vary completely. And if so please leave a comment here.

I noticed some HOM effects high on some walls in the first level and somewhat more distracting ones in the third level, but they really doesn’t detract from game play. They just get annoying at certain points. There was however a perplexing prop placement. A very large gun located in a courtyard that I walked right through was located in an area enclosed by 4 walls. It points directly at a wall, but should have been tilted up, lending more realism to the scene. Attention to detail is most important and although great care is taken with enemy placement, which is by far more important, certain “realities” should also get some of that TLC.

There is more than a sufficient amount of ammo and health to get you by thoughout the game. In fact, there’s almost too much, it’s so plentiful. The enemy is so well placed, you find yourself getting hit and you have no idea where the shots are coming from. I found it quite comforting to have all that available health lying about.
Nevertheless, it is a bit over the top as are the cache’s of ammo.

OK…a few more nit-noids. None of the levels, except the first which doesn’t suffer this problem, really don’t flow into the next level.
Except with the transition from level one to level two, how you end up where you are when you enter the next level makes no sense. At the begining of level 3, you enter a big house. In level two there is no such building anywhere to be seen, especially at the exit. When you start level 4, there is no door from whence you exited to that outside area.

Then there are the 2 lions placed in a room in this big house that I just couldn’t understand. They’re more the kind you’d fine outside on either side of a large door. They were out of place inside a room in a house and served no purpose except fill the space in the room. Guess they were easier than filling it with furniture?.

You are not given the knife when you start the game, and you never pick it up. There are probably 6 or 7 doors that require breaking that require the use of dynamite. I found this to be annoying. I can see one or possibly 2, but every level had one and some had more than that. Anything overdone like that loses something, IMHO.

OK…bottom line. This is a good level. I enjoyed playing it and PZ has, by far, done an excellent job of putting enemies in well-concealed positions thereby making it difficult to see them and get them And, if you scan an area, they might not be there, but as you approach, all of a suddent, there they are. This makes for an exciting battle and one that requires some strategy to complete.

These levels are definitely worth the download. Aside from the few problems, gameplay is challenging. I look forward to possibly a Level
5 continuation and more from this author.
