09 May Update
The problem with Hammer doesn’t seem to have been corrected yet, so it seems only fair to extended the deadline by another week. I’m not happy about doing it but I can’t see another option.
Closing date is now 9:00 GMT Monday 17th May 2010.
My apologies for all entrants who have rushed to finish, but I will accept updated maps if you feel the extra time is useful.
Introduction
It’s time for another single player mapping competition.
This one is called HunterVille and all the details are below.
Format
A single player, stand alone map for Half-Life 2: Episode Two.
How the competition will be judged
The winning map will be the one that creates an interesting scenario using at least one Hunter. I am looking for maps that create tension and foreboding of a coming battle.
There is no maximum number of Hunters that can be used, but if it’s too hard then that may count against the map.
The other aspects of the map are completely open. It can be indoors, outdoors, with other enemies or not, with rebel squads or solo.
I want to finish the battle and say “WOW”, that was great!
Using custom textures, models and sounds won’t necessarily ensure your map receives more attention, it’s more about the layout and use of assets than anything else.
Closing Date
The closing date for entries is 9:00AM GMT Monday 3rd May 2010. This is longer than the last competition but hopefully not too long that entrants don’t focus.
Rules
1. The map must be original and not have been released publicly before.
2. More than one entry is allowed by individual mappers or development teams, but iterations of the same map are not allowed.
3. By entering the competition you grant PlanetPhillip.com the right to release the map as part of the HunterVille mappack (which will consist of all the maps entered into the competition) All maps will be clearly credited. Your entry must not appear before the release of the mappack.
4. No assets from retail games other than HL2, HL2: Ep1 or HL2: Ep2 are allowed.
5. No assets from previously released maps or mods are allowed without written permission from their originals authors, which MUST be included in the entry email.
6. My decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into about it.
Prize Fund
Winner: $100, payable via PayPal
Two Honourable Mentions: $15 each, payable via PayPal
To Enter
Send an email with your map attached and any installation instructions. Make sure you include a readme.txt, identifying you, the author, and any other details you feel important.
Files larger than 20Mb should be uploaded to a free host first.
Payment
YOU MUST HAVE ACCESS TO A PAYPAL ACCOUNT.
I may not use Steam to purchase games for winners, like I did in the last competition.
Questions, suggestions and entries should be sent to:

6th March 2010
I’m determined to enter one of these competitions one day! Will have to see if I have enough time, and a good enough idea.
6th March 2010
So you went with the ” Hunterville ” idea. Good call !
6th March 2010
I’m into this one too if I manage to get enought time off the army this time too. My NovaSniping map was done in 3 days. But now for the big question: Should I make more traditional map (bigger chance of success) or continue making puzzle based map with fresh ideas (has greater chance of failing in popularity but I learn a lot more from it)?
Now I’ll grab my pen and paper and go make some design docs for the map and see if my brains like to coop with me and give me some badass hunter scenarios!
Ps. It is good that you don’t limit the number of enemies this time and I am happy to see that this is about hunters. I really liked them in ep2. What next? ZombineVille.
6th March 2010
*cracks Knuckles*
7th March 2010
Knuckles! Nooooooo!!! Now who will guard the chaos emeralds?
9th March 2010
lmfao
7th March 2010
Time to get brainstorming.
7th March 2010
Good luck all.Bigger is better but not always best.Crap is crap no matter the size.Quality and something to keep me interested rule for me.A puzzle here or there dont hurt either as long as it not some einstein thing lol.
7th March 2010
Very well said sir !
7th March 2010
would love to add a map too to this competition, but i don’t have time for it. i still am working very hard on my 4th and last HL2 sp-mod, called Final Horror (or final project). it will have 7 sp-maps and i am nearly done with map6 now.
19th March 2010
last? what are you moving on to?
8th March 2010
I will attempt an entry for this competition.
8th March 2010
I will probably submit something for this.
Maybe have some additional hunter animations, but valve didn’t give us the hunter control rig, so I’ll probably have to use a stand in model for any custom scenes. (unless I want to screw up the original hunter)
Good luck everybody.
8th March 2010
Hmm, I’ve had a lot of interesting ideas about a map for this, good vibes as well. To the paper!
8th March 2010
Hmm… This looks interesting.
I am not good mapper. (Only about 20hours of hammer usage) But maybe in this time I can get something fun and playable… Atleast I got many ideas
9th March 2010
Hey Phillip, I have a question concerning the competition: are playtesters permitted?
9th March 2010
Yes, playtesters are permitted.
9th March 2010
I am really bad at making maps but for all you mappers and modders, here’s an idea: A small Combine outpost in the desert where Hunters are assembled. The player would make their way through the complex towards the power generators to destroy them, fighting soldiers and newly assembled hunters on the way.
9th March 2010
lol, monday the 3TH of may.
Isn’t it 3RD of May
I’ll probably hand in something too!
12th March 2010
Thought up of an awesome idea, but found out the game bugs out when you modify the hunter’s disposition towards other npcs and such. Time to get back to the drawing-board.
12th March 2010
I’m going to build something tonight. It’s going to be an adaptation of Kafka’s “A Country Doctor.” You’ll love it.
13th March 2010
How in the world will you do that?
14th March 2010
How? Well, with some difficulty, but making a level is pointless unless you take some creative risks.
24th March 2010
Adaptation of The Country Doctor? That would be AWESOME!!
18th March 2010
I’ll give it a try
25th March 2010
Oo, tempting.
26th March 2010
Please for the love of God, someone make a map where you play as combine alongside the hunters.
21st April 2010
NGAH!
I’m going to have to enter this or at least make a map around the theme for fear of a friend hurting me. D:
21st April 2010
Glad to hear it. Please thank your friend for me.
30th April 2010
Deadline closing in! I’ve got an entry basically made. Still going to need to do a lot over the weekend.
Anyone else got any updates?
30th April 2010
I’ve received 3 entries so far.
30th April 2010
In recent source SDK update valve broke the hammer editor. Vies are getting black all the time and prop browser is broken.
Pretty bad timing for SDK to die… Just before this competition is going to end.
If valve is not getting the SDK fixed before this competition ends, could you move the deadline forward couple of days?
I have half finished map and I would really like to submit it… :/
30th April 2010
yes, hammer is dead.. that’s the worst nightmare!
30th April 2010
Nevermind, Found old binaries and I can now use hammer without problems.
If somebody needs the old binaries also, download this http://mirror.cazzaserver.com/misc/pre_update_binaries.zip
1st May 2010
01 May Update
I have just learnt I will be travelling for some of next week. Since I can’t play and judge the entries I have decided to extend the deadline by one week.
Closing date is now 9:00 GMT Monday 10th May 2010.
My apologies for all entrants who have rushed to finish, but I will accept updated maps if you feel the extra time is useful
1st May 2010
Well if Valve gets around to fixing Hammer I’ll have time to fine tune my map
1st May 2010
This deadline extension is really great, since an update messed with the Source SDK…
Some users might not be able to fix their issues…
1st May 2010
Ah, this is terrific! It would seem your excursion beyond has coincided with the recent SDK mess-up via a seemingly harmless update.
Assuming it might be fixed in-time to make this coincidence worthwhile, but there are a few work-arounds anyway…
Good Luck everyone!
2nd May 2010
It’s brilliant timing; Valve broke the OB SDK and so he goes travelling.
2nd May 2010
Good news since I was simplifying the brushwork to get the map finished on time. Now I can add more detail.
9th May 2010
Deadline has been extended once again. This is due to the Hammer issue.
Closing date is now 9:00 GMT Monday 17th May 2010
9th May 2010
Aww man, I stopped working on it, because I thought I wouldn’t finish, so I could work on it later again in great detail
Now I would’ve had two extra weeks…
9th May 2010
Well, you have at least an extra week. If Valve haven’t fixed the issue by next week, I’ll extend again.
9th May 2010
i asume there are hammer problems when you map with ep2, i map as you probebly know dayly with the ep1 hammer version and there are no problems with that at all.
and i hope another week will make that hammer is fixed by then or even sooner ofcourse. although i doubt it, we have had our share of hammer update errors over the years (still remember like a dark nightmare the env_cubemap error that made parts of the map totaly black a few years ago), and it always took a few weeks or more before Valve fixed the issues.
but, i hope it can be fixed soon, or maybe someone knows how to fix it themselves.

9th May 2010
As Koopa said above, you can run Hammer if you rollback the binaries to a previous version. This approach is also covered in this Steam thread:
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1245534
So, if you really need to get it to work, you can. Myself, I’m just waiting for Valve to fix it. I may be waiting for a very long time. XD
11th May 2010
Hey,
An unofficial fix is out right now. I know there were other fixes already but this one works without any problems and it includes new features that Valve added in the last SDK update. This is a real fix and totally safe.
Here it is:
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=14874569&postcount=248
If you don’t have TF2 here is the file you need:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/uidmdhlowzz/VertexLit_and_unlit_Generic_vs20.zip
A tip: If you are using Source SDK Base for your mod instead of EP2 or HL2 then put that file into X:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\username\source sdk base\hl2\shaders\fxc
To be safe, I added this file to all HL2 directories. half-life 2 , half-life 2 episode 2, and source sdk base folders all have hl2 folder inside. Just create hl2\shaders\fxc\ directory for all of them.
I hope this helps to you too.
12th May 2010
Source SDK was patched.
2007 -> Episode Two appears to be working fine.
17th May 2010
Submitted my contest entry, Phillip
If you could shoot me a quick email/comment when you’ve got the map, that would be great. Don’t want to head off to sleep wondering if it made it through or not
23rd May 2010
Just a quick update.
I have packaged the mod and it is undergoing beta testing as I type.
I am now preparing the post. I received 13 entries, which is really pleasing and some of the maps are just incredible.
It has been very hard for me to select a winner and I may replay a few entries just to be sure.
I won’t rush this process even though I am really excited to get the mod into your hands for you to play.
Thank you for your patience, I promise you it’s worth it.
