Single Player First Person Shooter Maps and Mods for Half-Life 1, 2 and Episodes 1, 2 and 3

Starting in the kitchen you need to kill everything you find and then look for the secret button to release the floor doors and enter the underground area.

That’s all there is: no story, just an excuse to shoot stuff.

Sounds fun to me!

Very short, but moderately entertaining if you enjoy shooting things.

Isn't shooting things the whole reason for playing games like this?

There's nothing better than shooting things… (only in videogames, of course)

Well yes, but usually the shooting is accompainied by the need for wits and not just brute strength.

No, neither HL1 or HL2 are just about shooting
things, they both have the best balance of gameplay then any other retail game you like to mention.

    Maybe?

it wasn't that bad for 10 minutes design and architecture is ok, 'shooting things" wasn't hard…custom content was enjoyable

    Maybe?

Yes, short – 1 map. Well designed scenery in some places, sparse in others. 1 good fight.

Choosing a recommendation image for this took a while. At first I was thinking it was an Avoid It! because there really wasn't much there.

And then I died a few times (which in itself is not a reason for changing you mind about a map) but I realized that there is more to this than a silly kitchen with bread and a toaster, with some blocky design and too many Vortigaunts.

I actually think the basic layout is pretty good on a conceptual level, although it makes no sense if you try to imagine a real place like this, but it works for a map.

It’'s easy to miss the floor doors and button and the only reason it's worth going down is for the slightly surreal tree underground.

Clearly this was an afternoon project just for kicks and practice but besides all the obvious faults I quite enjoyed it.

I think this was supposed to be part of some build-a-house project and tetsu0 got the kitchen. Thus the kitchen looks the best and the other areas don't look so good. This map doesn't actually depict a realistic setting. There are other interesting little things like new textures and that cool shoot door but in the end the map is kinda a collection of things he wanted to map, instead of a legitimate mission.

It's a good challenge and I can say it is totally possible to beat this map. A short, 5-minute fun run.

    Maybe?

Not the worst looking map I've ever seen, but yet another map that should have been part of something bigger. By far the best area was the crowbar fest in the kitchen, but it could have done with a few of the cupboards opening to reveal health or ammo. it's difficult to think of a longer review but it's worth 5 minutes of your time.

Okay map, not much to look at and most areas apart from kitchen area are poorly constructed and dull with no ambient sound effects.
The bullsquid coming through the wall was, while quick and brief, a nice sequence but otherwise nothing really happens as you go about killing zombies, aliens and a pair of soldiers.

    Think Twice

I always like maps with real life houses. But this time with flying toasters etc… Well, map name is Kitchen, but I was hoping to see bigger house, maybe next time…

And "shoot to open" logo, you've done something wrong when you have to put sign like that.

Overall yet another "no one remembers this after 5mins" project.

    Avoid It!

Well, I liked the toaster and the bread. I can't say I liked anything else in this map, although there is some crowbarring fun to be had at the opening. The grunts in the map were kind enough to blow themselves up for me, that was appreciated. This certainly isn't the worst type of map out there for HL, but it also seemed pointless with no ending or real reason to exist.

The good news here is that it appears Tetsu0 has gone on to improve quite a bit, by winning and/or placing in other TWHL competitions.

Gordon bought himself a new house. But, unfortunately, the disasters are typical to him, and this is not an exception :(. The kitchen is infected with zombies and sound dogs, and the electroshockers are waiting outside. So we take a crowbar and tidy up the house, using it as a broom. One of this place's sights are the exploding chairs. Another one is that Gordon speaks during the clean up! He comments what is going on with Barney's voice.

Then we go outside. I thought that this is the end of the map, but found a button which opened the door to the underground bunker. There we find a beautiful cave, after which we enter another room, see the sign "Congratulations, you win!" and nothing else happens.

The design is mixed. The kitchen and the cave look good, but everything else is not impressive. The author uses new textures, most of them are from Half-Life 2. And, as was said before, the design is not an image of the real place.

I think this one is worth trying, and if you won't like it, you won't lose much time.

    Avoid It!

This is a completely pointless map, ok so it does have a thread of structure, get out, get down and get finished but beyond that it's meaningless. You can achieve the object of this map, i.e. get to the finish line, without getting killed of killing any thing, something I did first time through without cheat.

The fact that you can beat the game just by dodging and running past your enemy indicates just how unsound this map is. There appears to be no reason to go into the kitchen, hence the phase "stay out of the kitchen". On the second play through I attempted to kill as much as possible, this was done by back tracking having picked up weapons.

The whole map is illogically structured, with no thought, little planning and no conception to what makes a workable and playable game.

    Play It Now!

Im too optimistic, which is good these recently maps ahven't been so bad they are quick fill with combat and good memories, I mean in this map I love one datil, there's nothing more difficult in HL1 regarding to have the abbility to beat a houndeye with just the crowbar! so I liked that because was a thing I haven't done it since 2008 or so, when I played so much more stuff of HL1 than HL2, so I liked that, also the exploding chair were comic, imagine to be seat there and fart or so and get ur ass in flames!!, ok anyway I liked this too fast and really good for target practice.

  17. Think Twice

This map is very short and is an out and out action map.

I guess I'll start with the toaster and the bread textures. Both were done really well and it's nice to see something different (much like the last mod) in the HL universe.

The action was different. I couldn't really decide if I liked it or disliked it because it was so up and down. The crowbar fight at the beginning wasn't much fun, but the outside fight I enjoyed quite a lot, even if it was easy.

Then we get to the "shoot to open" door. First of all you don't need to shoot it (I used crowbar) and why put a sign for it in the first place? I don't know something about that wasn't right at all.

It's sorta fun but is way too short.

    Think Twice

This map looks to be another test map, though it one of the better ones I've seen. For what it was, I enjoyed this one.

There doesn't seem to be much point other than killing everything that you can see. It seemed a bit of a challenge because the only weapon I had was a crowbar but it forced me to get a little creative. So I ended up using the Houndeyes to kill most of the zombies in the kitchen area at the start.

The kitchen itself looked quite interesting with the toaster and bread loaf. I would have loved it if the cupboards in the kitchen could be opened and the contents could be seen. A stray headcrab in one of the cupboards would have been cool touch for a quick scar but alas there was none.

Once I found the pistol (thanks to my trusty Houndeye sidekick and his epic barrel breaking skills), I was able to dispatch everything outside the kitchen with ease. Unfortunately, the outside area seemed quite bland but it did improve when I took the lift down into the underground area. There were a few interesting touches that I thought were good like the iris door and the dead soldier slumped against a wall.

This map isn't too bad as a first map (if it is the authors first) but it isn't really anything special. Give it a go if you want to do something for 5 minutes but don't hold your breath.

    Avoid It!

Besides I like some of the textures and layouts there is nothing else which can save this map.
I wonder if there's any sense at all, as it just looks like some sort of little competition map.
But what kind of competition then??

Yes, it all starts near a kitchen and that's already weird enough. But that's not all!
Why it's like in some sort of bunker? And there is nothing else there??
Sorry that's too many design oddities for me.
Enemy placement is ridiculous too and there's just not much sense anywhere.
A very, very short map but at least some (very easy) combat.
No puzzles, no story, balancing, atmosphere – everything is missing.
Not worth playing in my eyes.. avoid it.

    In The Kitchen for Half-Life

    It’s… okay.

Combat is ridiculously easy. It’s just a bunch of vortigaunts, two grunts, two Alien Controllers and that’s it.

I have mixed opinions about the environment, since I like those “kitchens” or “houses” people make on GoldSrc, but then again, it all looks a bit unprofessional.

Though, more on the positive side, I quite liked this map. I don’t know if a beginner made this or it’s just for fun, but I enjoyed playing it.
