  1. This one looks rather good, or at least better than most of the recently released mods. The story seems rather poor, esspecially since the mod seems to take place in City 17, which should have been destroyed by the time the mod takes place. (Or did I miss something? Hmm).

I'll most certainly download it and give it a try.

  2. Play It Now!

This is a very nice linear mod.
It is not very difficult, but it has some nice touches with the zombies.
Everything worked OK on my set up, and the scenery looked good.
I hope the authors make a part 2.
    Thanks for sharing.

  3. Play It Later

Joutomaa is a challenging mod to review because while it gets so much right, it also falls short in a few areas, ultimately feeling incomplete. That said, it's still far better than most of the drivel out there.

The mod does a splendid job visually, looking and feeling like a lost chapter from the canal sequence in Half-Life 2. You'll spend most of your time trekking through the canal system, both inside and outside. The mod starts off in a nicely rendered apartment building and an adjacent city square that set the mood. The Combine are definitely in control. I liked this mod's use of ambient set pieces. The train going by. The helicopter flying through the air. It helps give an authenticity to the proceedings and its something even a few of the top notch mods fail to do often enough.

From a technical side, there are lots of nice details that I appreciate. The fact that the television screens work. The radio plays music. If it looks like you can interact with it, you probably can.

As far as gameplay goes, there are also some puzzles here that you don't see too often. Having to find the valve, attach it to a socket, and rotate it to open a door is a mechanic I liked seeing again. Smashing glass to reveal emergency switches is always satisfying. The mod also has an affinity for wooden floors that fall away under your feet, keeping you on alert whenever you have to cross them.

Truth be told, the biggest problem with this mod is that nothing happens. There are probably a dozen enemies over the course of four maps. Four entire maps. That's just as many as some non-episodic campaigns, with complete story and pacing arcs. That's plenty of time to set something up, but unfortunately, it's wasted here. I can't point to a single crescendo in the whole thing. The pacing is dull and even. Even the boss at the end – no cinematic entrance, no dramatic death, he's just "there." I can't even tell from the mod itself who I am, what I'm doing, or why I'm doing it. The Mod DB entries says it's about trying to get to a missile base to help the resistance, but nowhere is that communicated in the mod itself.

It's been suggested that Joutomaa might be the first episode of several, which wouldn't surprise me given that I never seemed to reach my intended destination.

Because it is so reliant on what comes next, Joutomaa can't help but leave me feeling empty and unsatisfied when the screen fades to black and the credits slowly roll. Very slowly, in fact. It's worth checking out, mind you, but don't go in expecting bountiful action or a compelling narrative. Think of it as a scenic trip through the canals.

  4. Why isn't there a review by Phillip by now???

Kyourou said it – This could be part of the the original.
    It's pretty good.
    I like it!

It's good, not great. It has some action but not nearly enough. Very little Combine forces. I really like an enemy with a little brains and able to defend themselves. Makes the game exciting and challanging. I really don't know why anyone would still want to use Zombies in these. Where's the challenge to that? When's the last time you were killed by a zombie? In some mods they come in big groups and respawn but not here.I had it on normal settings and it was real easy to beat.It is a fun, shorter mod, just wish there was more intense fighing and puzzle solving.

  7. Play It Later

I can't disagree with any of the snipes about the missing narrative and lack of real combat challenges, but I just want to reiterate another common thread here: this mod looks and feels top notch! The attention to detail, and the complexity of the architecture are excellent. I'd love to see a more mature project from the author.

  8. Why isn't there a review by Phillip by now???

    Laziness I am afraid, sorry.

  9. Phillip says Play It!

I wish I could write a review as well as Kyouryuu but I can't. He manages to express everything I wanted to but in a much more eloquent way.

I wonder what this mod would play like if you removed the beauty? I've mentioned this idea but I would like to see this mod with orange textures used for developing. Whilst not every mod should be fun to play as orange textures I feel that this mod's visual appeal would show that it lacks substance.

I, like Kyouryuu, felt empty after the finish and feel that the lack of appropriate music and enough action is more serious that I first thought.

It's easy to be lulled into thinking this mod is better than it is, simply because I looks so good.

A good example is image 26. SPOILER BELOW
The appearance of the Antlion Guard *before* the player exits the drain area is a big mistake. I simply waited inside there until I had killed it. I actually hate the AG but feel that the player should never be able to just sit back and kill it. The player should have been forced to exit the drain and drop down far enough to never be able to get back inside.

Suddenly my heart would have started pumping as I rush to find cover and out maneuver the AG. In fact it looked like the area was brilliantly designed for cover and movement, unfortunately being a p*%sy I never found out.

That's just one example and I am sure there are more.

I have no doubt the author has the ability to make some great mods but feel that he should expand his beta testing team/programme and never forget that no matter how beautiful a mod is, if the player doesn't finish it with a feel of beating an exciting challenge then he has simply made an interactive exhibit.

You must play this map if for nothing more than to see how nice it looks but I would be surprised if you finished it and said "WOW!, What a ride!".

A very nice map in terms of design, but not enough action. Still, I enjoyed the walkabout. I concur with other critics on the lack of scenario but give it a bit of rework, expand it and you've got a potential hit.

  11. Kyouryuu did write a nice review! He could have a shot at the "Orange Box" contest!! ;-)

To me I feel it's really nice to see a combination of City Architecture and that of the Episode 2 Forest props. I've really never seen a smooth combination of the two in a mod that not only played well, but also looked nice.I got a chance to run through the whole thing today and I really enjoyed it a lot. Hopefully though we can see some more interesting game play mechanics with some of the physics puzzles I've seen in-game and through the panoramic's on the web page here.

  13. *SPOILERS*

To echo Phillip, I did the same thing with the Antlion Guard, at least until it ran back around the corner and I was forced to come down and follow it. It would have been easy to spring the trap on the player once they were halfway in the room and past the point of no return. Having the Antlion Guard charge out from a canal grate, for example, would be a quality "Oh S—!" moment that wouldn't seem too out-of-place since you saw the grubs earlier.

  14. Sorry for being so demanding but I love your reviews Phillip! Great site btw keep up the good work!

  15. Play It Now!

I agree with most of what has already been said. Good architecture, nice props, realistic things happening as you progress thru the mod. ie the train at the beginning moving props and the turning train station at the end.

Very linear progress that made it easy to find the way through the mod.

Sometimes the areas seemed very open but sparse with detail and weapons and health were always easy to find. One area I did find hard and that was in the sewers where you had to get up on the pipe to progress thru to the next area. It was bothersome to stack up the drums and crates which slows the pace down.

I played it on normal and it only took about an hour to play. All in all a pleasant, quite easy mod, visually appealling and fun to play.

  16. Play It Now!

A nice short mod. If a first effort, well done.

I didn't have a problem with the so called lack of enemies to shoot.

  17. Play It Now!

Well done liner map, works great.

  18. Good to hear that you liked it, especially the reviews were fun to read. I agree that it is too short, but I wanted to publish it before joining the army.

Also there was problem with storytelling.
(i had all the spoken lines and scripted scenes written up and ready, but lack of voice actors forced me to cut these)

You may hear more of me in future, when I get back from Army.

I was really impressed with this modification. It looks really good from the start, all the way to the finish. The gameplay is fun, even though there isn't too much action. But I thought that was good, since my attention was focused on the ambience and what I was doing. This really feels like a first of many episodics. So I hope there will be more!

Heya, just wanted to say that im back from army and started working on Joutomaa chapter 2 "The Great Wastelands"
You should expect it to be released near end of year 2009

    ~Sauli

  21. Very nicely done, I enjoyed this MOD thoroughly, Can't hardly wait for chapter 2. Sauli, you have great level design, coupled with imagination..Well done !!!! ( a little short, but sweeeet !! ) nice work !!!

  22. Play It Now!

The high rating is based on the beauty of it. I can't recall another map where the lighting effects work so well. Also, some nice puzzles although in terms of battles, there is only one small area where it was good.

The way it ends means its to be continued. If this is an indication, I hope it eventually turns out to be a really long mod.

    Play It Now!

Very nicely done and rather clever in places – see all the previous comments because it's all been said.
A great (if brief) beginning for something bigger to follow.
A must play before the release of The Great Wastelands.

  24. Personal Favourite

This is a wonderfully done mod. I enjoyed it very much, just a pity that it's so short. I tried it out because of Joutomaa 2 being in development and the video clip intrigued me. This mod is definetely fun to play and an eye candy, too. I rated this one a personal favorite "cuz I value a beautiful and flawless map a little higher than gameplay itself. Joutomaa is a little lacking when it comes to combat, but that can be changed with a higher difficulty setting. (I always play on standard setting the first time and will have another go on hard difficulty.)

  25. Play It Later

Personally, I downloaded this several months ago and lost interest quite quickly and went onto some thing else.I must have been in a mood of some sort. While reading a post about the release of a follow up chapter, I realized that there was something I really liked about the mod, but couldn't place it so I gave it another run.
There wasn't anything truly stunning about the mod and I prefer a higher level of combat and puzzle solving than it offered, but I really enjoyed it.
It was a very nice casual play over some well laid out maps which had a solid HL2 feel that I may have forgotten while engaging in some far more heavily combat based works recently. It was a stable play with good continuity, simple story, bundled nicely into some very nice environments.Once I was underway for a few minutes, I had a very nice play through it.
While the author did some great work here and has some fine potential,I would truly like to see a more "fleshed out" mod with a slightly higher emphasis on challenging the player to explore the environments more so as to appreciate them fully.
I'm happy to hear of the "Joutomaa: The Great Wastelands — PreRelease" for a new chapter of this mod and hope to see more from Sauli Saarimaa in the future.

just played, it simply blowed me away!
This mod includes one of the best and polished designed maps from all community stuff, everything, everywhere, you look (at) you see an incredible amount of details, no ground part is plain, many sweet little but incredible atmospheric places and hideouts.
Gameplay was good as it pushed you slowly forwards, enemies were placed well and some really nice scenes like the first zombie or the combine at the pipes.
The only bad thing was, that it was so short.

    That is true mapping design!

it was fun, only one puzzle gave me a fit. the long pipe with the gas. I hope they make another one or continue on the story line. few hours of game play. the guardian battle was nice too.

  29. Maybe?

I was expecting great things from this mod after reading the reviews on moddb and Planet Phillip. After playing, I am pretty disappointed.

While the mod looks incredible, especially in the background details, overall, it is just not that interesting. The only enemies you will face are some combine, a few zombies, a handful of antlions and the antlion guard featured in the screenshot above. The antlion guard encounter was too easy as well, something must have gone wrong with the mapping or coding, since it didn't even try to attack me.

The creator is working on the second chapter, although there hasn't been too much news on the development recently. As it stands though, this mod is just very uninteresting and I wouldn't even say it's worth your time playing at all. Experiencing the visuals doesn't even make it worth it, there are mods that look just as good and better, with much more appealing action and content. Give it a miss.

I'm giving this mod a "maybe?", since it would be unfair to rate it any lower. It is not buggy, it is visually appealing, but it is lifeless. While I would actually say in the text review to give it a miss, to actually give it 1 star is unfair.

  30. Play It Later

I was torn between a PIL and a Maybe score for this mod, which is a shame since it looks really nice and is very polished. The problem is that it's just, well, bland. Nothing really happens throughout the whole experience; there are some enemies but they don't really pose any threat and some puzzles which are hardly even noticeable.

What the mod needs is pacing. It is clearly based on the Route Canal chapter from Half-Life 2, and whilst it looks the part, there is never any feeling of being pursued or under pressure. The mod doesn't really build up to anything, so that when the credits rolled my feeling was "oh, so I guess that's it then".

What Joutomaa does do well is provide some good looking environments and a lot of polish. The introductory scenes are nicely made and do well to set up anticipation for something which unfortunately never pans out.
