[...] Need For Energy (HL) [...]

2nd May 2009
It’s been a while since I palyed anything Black Mesa style and I really enjoyed this map. The opening sequence is in Russian but it’s only a few sentences. Probably says something like “We need an energy source for something. Please go and find it! Come back soon.” So off you go.
The design is just as you would expect for Black Mesa and there is a really nice area you can see in image 08. Pity there wasn’t more gameplay around it. At least I didn’t get much. Maybe I was supposed to try and get acros the gap. Can you?
Anyway, it’s not very long, so some readers won’t be happy but I wish maps like this were made more often. I had more fun with this than with Dark World!
5 Words Or Less Review
Short and sweet

The good point of this one is well put together architecture and design with lots of interconnection and really attention to architectural detail
The bad: it’s the kind of copy/paste zone for each side of the reactor, the fact that the gampelpay is put on the uptrend by respawning in one way and limitating the health and ammo on the other way (I think especially this one was release for a contest there is no real need to make it that challenging, so that if you rush and fire you have no chance to complete this one
It’s still worth but not great like I expected from Phillip’s comment
I don’t know if you finished this map but the aim is to return to the the place where you started so there is an objective to complete

Stef, yes I did finish the map. If you look at the last image, this door only opens on the way back to the starting point, which is just to the right. I also mentioned that you need to return the energy source back to the scientists in the description.

i sure do wish more half life 1 mod’s would appear. long ones with lots of game play. oh hum….

I definitely agree. But a majority of the mappers have moved on to the Source engine.. So I am really glad to see something like this released. I am actually working on a map for Half-Life 1 right now, don’t know how good it will end up though. ^^

Fantastic a new hl1 map\mod downloading it right away.
@John & M82sniper: I still have some old half-life 1 maps\mods on my computer that aren’t available on this website. I will send them Philip asap maybe he will upload them then.

Nice blast from the past. At the end the scientist says “Excellent work” I believe. Some surprises, and just enough ammo on Normal to keep going. Echoing Philip – a welcome relief from Dank Whirl erm Dark World.
Ochen’ horrorshow.

Short and sweet but could’ve had some testing before release – ammo were too scarce and even though I picked up ammo for the Gauss Gun/Gluon Gun I found neither.

Short.
But nostalgia all the way.

I didnt like it , it was short, boring and with no point
23rd July 2010
I don’t really enjoy this map because It was a little and seemed that some things where pointless. For example, there was Gauss ammo but no guns that use that type of ammo. It had some poorly placed monsters and some good ones too. Ammo was very rare and I think it needed more of it.
Quick overview
A nice map with a few bad flaws but otherwise fun.

Typical tiny HL map with collecting 3 energy thingies as goal and bringing back to the scientist at the start.
Pro’s:
-Mesa feeling
-Decent level design
Con’s:
-Tough combats
-Less ammo+weapons
-Very short
