“Outpost Xen is a small single-player campaign mod for Half-life 2. You are a nameless person who has awoken to find the Xen Outpost empty after everyone has already evacuated leaving you behind. Vortigaunts lurk the hallways of the Outpost and there is no sign of any friendly life. Luckily, there is a person who needs a job done and is willing to help you just as long as you get something for him.
The overall objective is to escape the Outpost and Xen and to get back to earth. The only problem is finding a portal that will take you back to earth instead of teleporting you to another part of Xen which is probably infested with Vortigaunts. The mod is very short and was developed only by me with the exception of Voice Acting. Hopefully, you will enjoy it regardless of length!

I’m not completely convinced that I have the correct author but I couldn’t find a name in the readme (endme.html)

It always helps to know just where to extract the files to. Assuming people know where can lead to multiple (at least two) extractions.

Didn’t really like the way XEN was made in this to be honest. Could have used better textures and maybe even make use of the displacement tool in Hammer editor.

This one goes on the back burner has I have downloaded, installed and started the new Poke646: Vendetta. So far, very good.

I haven’t downloaded this one yet, but the screenshot above looks really familiar, a lot like a scene in a H-L1 mod that I played a few years ago (can’t remember its title). Is this an old mod that’s been ported to H-L2?

Ok here are my thoughts
I would say a bit below average all together but it was nice to see custom textures used and a little above average map scripting.
It was fun to fight against the Vortigaunts like old times. Some nice aspects of xen such as the healing pool was used and some okay keycard finding puzzles. This mod is worth the download even with some of its minor bugs. I rate this mod 3/5

I need help i started the mod found the portable phone and was looking arround for a access card to open the door…without be able to move foward the place with containers and lazerbeam leading to a toxic place…don’t know what to do???

To the far right in the toxic room, there is a cupboard which you open with the keycard. Quickly get it before you get locked in. Timing is needed.

If your stuck just after the last spot you had difficulty, remember that there is more to a desk than meets the eye.

true that.

Good but short. Played on normal. The only difficult puzzle was the first keycard. Difficult to know where to look and difficult to grab in the short time allowed. After that, it’s basically some Zen hopping and Vortigant blasting. The Vorts-in-a-Box routine became a little obvious by the third time. On the last one, I took both of them down with a single shotgun blast.
I realize that even a short mod takes many hours to create but I think that slipping in a couple of modified existing maps to stretch the play out a bit is better than leaving the player feel like the rollercoaster ended in the middle of its run.

To be honest I was pleased when this game was over, lost count of the number of times I seriously considered giving this one up due to lack of interest. Having persevered I’m not sure it was worth the effort, to progress keys and levels need to be found and activated in obscure locations, coupled with a series of Xen floating islands to negotiate, the whole thing turned into a frustrating experience without much fun. Not that the game is hard, it just does not hold interest with very limited content, and gameplay lacking many essential elements required to hold the players interest.
The design is basic and boxy with textures ok but nothing outstanding, content of sets is very sparse with much the same details used such as laptops and plastic containers throughout, making the whole experience lacking in interest and a bit of a bore.
I would have a guess that this was the author’s first serious attempt at mapping, if so this review is not meant to be discouraging, and it is hoped the author will go onto bigger and better things. He needs to build on the work and experience gained with this effort and consider the gameplay from the player’s point of view. It important to capture the players interest early on and feed this with varying and progressive development of the gameplay throughout the map/mod.

Having just played HMS Defiance, the team is still gaining experience, it’s not short of ideas but applying them to mappering is proving a major task.

I you don’t want to wait for Phillip to fix it (he will), the DL at moddb worked for me in Nov/Dec.

I have added two working download links.

I gave it a PIL because its worth the download, its not perfect but i enjoyed the little “flashback” to the old days of Xen. i really liked that in HL. the 1st keycard was a bit rough in the timing but it was doable once it was located. overall i had fun playing.
