  1. opengl32.dll is in the Paranoia download.

  2. thanks, locworks and phillip

  3. Well, after a boring intro, the first smell of action was disappointing.
I love to have a team around me sometimes, feels more like a mission, a real mission where I take a break from single handedly saving the day.
The textures, as pretty as they are, the fact that they’re repeated in the same big room is confusing; the maps do look inspired from actual buildings, but some are short and represent passages or exploration or just 2 enemies or so. The god damn weapons won’t hold still while shooting and I came to a sudden death when 2 started to shoot at me at once.
Some levels are laggy so I paused playing this one.. for now.
The only thing left for me to see are the scary parts, in fact, that’s why I waited so long for this, not for the graphics, because usually, enhanced graphics means unsatisfactory gameplay. What I would like to see is interesting mapping and innovative gaming ideas; also battles worth fighting and puzzles worth solving.

This is a very high quality mod.

I’m sure you just meant this is a very high quality graphics type of mod.
Just today I saw a commercial for a new (strategy, I think; but the issue applies regardless of genre) game which said just 2 things besides the title; both were praising the new graphics.. Sad.

    I won’t be giving a recommendation since I haven’t finished it.
My 5 word review: So far, not so good.

  4. Play It Now!

I think this is one of the best mods this year. No bugs, no problems with the AI, mostly. Except for the occasional terrorist that doesn’t seem to get hit. Never got stuck, never roamed around without knowing what to do… Just keep in mind you have to hit everything in the head, bodyshots are a waste of time. It did ‘borrow’ some from ‘the thing’, that is clear… But it was done well. One of the machine guns had some ‘realistic’ recoil, making it hard to hit something, but you get plenty of other weapons. It’s a couple of hours gameplay, so it’s not too short either. Quality of graphics somwhere in between hl1 and hl2, definitely better than hl1. It starts off a bit slow, but that’s the training mission. After that it just keeps getting better and better. The zombies (mutants?) were very well done, I think. All in all, I say:

Okay–I think I’m all right now. Paranoia probably changed the setting on my video (hate it when that happens), and since I found out and changed it back, everything half life is running fine.

shawn, if you still visit this site, please tell me what did Paranoia change. I have the same problem, but I don’t know what to change back.

  6. the cfg file.put in your keys you use and save.if it keeps happening enter your keys and find the config.cfg file and in properties select read only and save.

  7. MegaB,

it’s been a few weeks so I’m a little fuzzy on how the problem started. My best guess is that in the “Video Modes” screen when you’re in Half-Life, where it says “software/OpenGL/Direct3D”, that Paranoia changed that feature from Direct3D to OpenGL. After I changed it back to Direct3D things worked normally again.

    I *think* that’s what happened. Sorry I can’t be more precise–good luck!

  8. The final version of the mod is released!

    - More enemy’s were added.
    - The difficulty levels were improved. Are you strong enough to beat the game on hard? :)
    - Critical bugs on the levels, which broke game scripts after the death of friendly NPC were fixed.
    - Subtitles is updated.

  9. Avoid It!

Man – I tried playing this & can’t find the shooting range anywhere.

  10. It’s the repetitive textures, isn’t it? That confuse you and make you spin round n round

Phillip, the download is to the patch only. Can you please give a usable download link to the latest release level of this mod.

  12. There is 2 downloads and one is the patch and the other is the main mod.I’m not sure why but thats the way it is at the moment.

  13. I have added a list of 1.2 downloads.

  14. I am trying to load this game via HL1 menu custom mods, however, it tells me map p_army1 is not on the system.

My download version does not contain p_army1, do I need to download a later level, if so what?

  15. Phillip, I have downloaded this mod twice tonight from different sites via your above list for version 1.2 both said set-up files were corrupted, can you please suggest a download that gives me the latest level with good files?

  16. can you please suggest a download that gives me the latest level with good files?

I just tried the AtomicGamer one and the file downloaded and installed with no problems. I had to make some changes to the path in the shortcut that was created because it used a “Valve” folder that I don’t have and I had to copy the Paranoia folder to my correct Steam installation and it ran ok.

  17. I downloaded from the LocWorks link above and the setup files was corrupt

  18. I’ll check it up. Can you post the exact size (number of bytes) of the downloaded file?

  19. Bugpoop, I have been having the same problems downloading this mod, I have now downloaded 4 times. 2 or 3 of the links listed result in a corrupt set-up, Phillip suggested AtomicGamer link which work for me regarding download, however, auto set-up puts the mod in a server file, so I needed to find it on my system then manually place the mod into my HL1 folder, I dont use steam to run HL1 mods. Have not yet loaded the game.

  20. The LocWorks download should be fine now. Apologies to everyone affected.

  21. Sorry for the late reply, but after I posted my message “I downloaded from the LocWorks link above and the setup files was corrupt”. I have since managed to download from the AtomicGamer link (see above) and I am pleased to report that its installed fine; except that I had to change the install folder manually.

I am glad the locworks link is working now, as this Total conversion is a class act. (expect for the odd ingame stall while loading the next section and occasional frame rate issue, which seem to be resolved if I close steam and restart.)

  22. I rated this 3/5, but still think everyone should try this, as it is one of the last decent single player Total Conversions for the HL1 engine.
The pros are High quailty new gfx, new weapons, new textures and new story.

As a showpiece (or resume for the makers) this is great (except for the occasional game stall.), but the execution of a First person shooter is poor.

Is this a shooter or a horror game???
It seems the makers have opted for somewhere in between.
The result is the game is too easy for a shooter and not scary and challenging enough for a horror game.

  23. every time i try to start a new game on this mod i get this message

    tmessage::TextMessageParse : messageCount>=MAX_MESSAGES

    anyone help me?

  24. I downloaded the 1,2 version a few weeks back but could not get the game to run at all, fortunately from reading a few of the comments on here I finally got the mod to install properly – by making a manual change to the installed directory…

After installation I had continual problems to launch HL with an error message constantly popping up to advise the the screen resolution must be a minimum of 800×600 – my desktop runs at 1920×1200 and HL at 1600xXXXX so I have no idea what that was about.

One I finally got into the game I COULD NOT select OpenGL and the game would not run at all, in frustration I decided to play one of the other custom games in my collection and this would not run in OpenGL mode either!!!

After a reboot of the system and several false starts once more (I have no idea how?) the game eventually launched without any errors and normal service resumed with my other HL mods – phew!!!

At the moment I’m trying to find the medical cerntre but have not spent too much time on this level – due to the amount of time wasted on just getting the mod to work :(

All appears to be running fine now – and I’ll report back with my rating once I complete the mod :-)

  25. Play It Now!

This mod has to be one of the best HL1 mods i’ve ever played. The environments are very well put together, packed with a lot of detail. A really short mod. But also one of the best. I wish it was a little longer.

  26. Play It Later

This was one of those mods I kept picking-up and putting-down, having now finally finished I am not too clear of my summary. I do know I found the beginning a drag and very slow to get into some meaningful action and progress, that aside I did enjoy the experience.

Story line was interesting and the way it was executed via missions and small squad tactics was excellent, it’s great when NPC work this well and the mod used them to their best advantage without ever getting in the way of the action.

What can you say about the architecture; for a HL1 mod it’s unique and for most of the time it’s was in a world of its own somewhere between HL1 and HL2, lets call it HL1.5.
The sets were so realistic with a scary level of detail; I kept getting the feeling that the surrounds were drawn from an actual complex which makes the whole thing even scarier.

The gameplay mixture was fairly limited without much in the way of puzzles and while most of the skins appeared new there was not a great variety of foe to enrich the combat.
The strength of the mod without doubt is within the story, its execution and the use of squad mission immersed in a unique underworld of fearful surroundings.

A big well done to the Paranoia team for all the good work, it’s hard to believe when playing this mod that HL1 is over 10 years, it’s almost has if the mod gave it a new lease of life.

  27. The first link gives a 404 and the last link doesn’t have Paranoia anymore in their db.

  28. The first link gives a 404 and the last link doesn’t have Paranoia anymore in their db.

I’ve removed them both. I’ll eventually upload it to my server and just link to those.

  29. Play It Now!

Right off the bat, this is the prettiest HL mod I’ve ever played (Napalm Edition might change that!). The game is entirely in Russian with english subtitles, which is fine. It adds a really cool flare of originality, I think. The music seemed a little out of place, but not a big deal. The enemies were incredibly creepy. Also adds a lot of cool features, like the equipable ballistic face mask and gasmask :D

Cons: The weapons. No matter what, the guns are strangely inaccurate in all circumstances. Realism doesn’t apply. Well timed burst fire shooting from a crouched position doesn’t make a difference. I thought it removed a little bit of the fear factor of the game, instead of crapping my pants at the zombies, I’m too busy angrily missing at him at 6 feet with an AK74. You’ll just end up using the shotgun the entire time.

Still, a damn fun mod that’s guaranteed to make you jump out of your seat a few times :D
