This mod rocks! I’ve been patient for it 7 months and its finally released!!!
Oh, yeah… I forgot to say… its release date was set on my dad’s birthday!

You mean Half-Life 2… you forgot the 2

filecloud limits you to ~30kbps without an account. yuck. the official paranoia website’s first download link is averaging 200kbps.

#3, This mod is made for HL1, runs fine with Steam! little strange with Russian signs, but the sub titles work good! I haven’t gotten into it to much yet. Graphics do look nice, the music is different!
05 December 2007 at 1:27 am
eh, there’s ragdolling and stuff. so at the very least, it’s for Half-Life Source, and you can’t get Half-Life Source without owning Half-Life 2. so technically, it’s for HL2.
Unless it doesn’t use any Half-Life or HL2 assets at all, then it’s just a source mod.
If it’s not all new assets, why in the world would you reuse ancient HL1 stuff when there’s higher poly/res/etc HL2 stuff?
doesn’t make sense to me. still downloading though
05 December 2007 at 1:34 am
well it IS for HL1… thats where it installs to. but … it just looks way higher quality than Half-Life would support…
05 December 2007 at 1:43 am
Yes, play this now. Do it.
05 December 2007 at 1:49 am
I liked it but on easy there’s not much in the way of fighting anything.Need to try again on medium.
But still the thing is good.
05 December 2007 at 2:03 am
Man, the graphics are outstanding! Since I have never played HL2, I can’t compare the two. But, I will say, that for HL1, the graphics are most assurdely above standard HL1. It installed with no problem (I don’t use Steam, either) and the only mistake I made was I didn’t bind the 3 extra keys, one for the gasmask, one for the head shield and the other for the painkillers!! Granted, it IS a large D\L, but with 53 maps it should keep me busy for awhile!
05 December 2007 at 4:10 am
This is a very high quality mod.
Or else!

** MAJOR DANGER AND NOTICE **PARANOIA USES A MODIFIED DLL FILE THAT IS DEEMED BANNABLE BY VAC.
it’s the opengl32.dll file in the half-life folder. Remove the file to solve the issue, but don’t forget to put it back when you want to play PARANOIA. (That’s moving the file, Not ERASING IT!)
Thank you!

A very good TC, with a lot of cool set-pieces and interesting execution of ideas (I especially liked the way Squad members were used, and the set-up before the “scary” section). There’s also a lot of good visuals and, whether intentional or not, the mod perfectly captures the melancholy atmosphere that STALKER had.
Shame they couldn’t get some English voice acting, but the subtitles and other text appear to have been spellchecked/proofread decently as there only seemed to be a few small errors (a lot of foreign mod translations are so bad that the constant errors grate a lot and impact my opinion of the storyline, especially as getting a decent English reader is all that’s needed to fix it, but this one was fine).
I did have a few problems though, firstly the console commands for hit detection don’t seem to be set up properly, so there are a lot of instances where your bullets don’t seem to register despite the fact you should be able to hit something fine. Setting them right did seem to help, but even then I had some issues, but I may as missed one or two commands. Thankfully there’s enough ammo to balance this (maybe a little too much).
Second, the story seemed a little “vapid”, that’s the closest I can get anyway; it established a lot of interesting sounding plot points and ideas, and, while it resolved them and provided a climax, towards the end it felt a little compressed together and rushed. While I usually find it a stupid complaint for mods, in this case it really did feel like the mod was a bit too short for what it was trying and could have done with a bit more to flesh out the story (also, a couple of enemies were only used once or twice, so that caused this impression too).
Finally, I thought the training section dragged a little; I think it would have worked better if the initial exploration was kept, but then have it become more linear and get you into the actual game faster.
Overall though, it’s excellent:

The only flaw I’ve noticed in this game is at the window sniping part where you first get the sniper rifle. the gun won’t shoot out the window in some spots, I nailed one of the enemies with a lot of rounds and saw no blood splats or anything…
05 December 2007 at 7:42 pm
Technically stunning but the gameplay is pretty awful.
My question to the developers would be why did you decide to do this for Half-Life 1? While it’s certainly very impressive what you’ve squeezed out of the old engine, it also seems to limit level sizes somewhat. Some transitions felt like they happened within less than a minute.
Hit detection felt way off. I’m not a bad player so aiming is not an issue, yet some enemies took around one clip of the standard rifle to take down and some times just a couple of slugs. At the odd occasion when I was point blank with my target, the bullets went right through.
Further frustration is added with the seemingly random way that doors work. Sometimes you can open them yourself, sometimes you have to wait for your confused team mates to go through their slow hop and skip routine.
As this is partly a survival horror game, I expected that ammo would run low – however, this mechanic felt increasingly arbitrary when faced with foes who are armed with the same weaponry as you. Why can’t we salvage much needed ammunition? Why did I have so little to start off with?
Lastly, I did get struck with a rather nasty bug on two separate map changes where I had to resort to nocliping myself out of a wall.
If you want to be wowed by what has been done to the seemingly ancient HL1 engine (and the admittedly very cool zombie designs), download and play this. Don’t expect a satisfying experience, however.
05 December 2007 at 7:55 pm
Firstly, if you want to play this mod in English, play with Russian language installed, but English subtitles. It is much more authentic.
Secondly, this mod is by far one on the best I’ve ever played for the good ‘ole HL1 Gold Source engine.
There is nothing more I can say. Just
06 December 2007 at 12:31 am
I’m playing it right now…and it won’t run with opengl– only with software mode and it won’t let me go beyond 640×480 and it lags horribly in big parts. This is strange because HL1 mods usually let me play with the highest settings and dont lag at all. Anyone know the fix? Perhaps it has something to do with what Jazzman posted?
Otherwise I think it’s great so far. I’ll post what I thought of it when I finish.
If you can, please help. I’m sure someone else out there is having the same problem.
06 December 2007 at 1:07 am
Stunning!!! Amazing… They did well into the bump mapping flashlight brightness, etc. This game does feel fun to play and it took me 3 hours to finish it..
06 December 2007 at 3:17 am
Muscle Horse’s comment reminded me that the fact you can’t pick up enemy weapons is another irritation I had with the mod (especially as they seem to be exactly the same guns as yours).
06 December 2007 at 4:36 am
Well my game seems to have fixed itself. Pretty good mod. My small review–
PROS:
-Ambience is spot on and sets a great mood.
-Lots of creepy enemies reminiscent of John Carpenters “The Thing”
-Great use of animation (HL2 animations in an HL1 mod? Strange!)
-Great texturing of models and world
-Neat little implements such as a ballistic faceplate addon
-Good translation from Russian
CONS:
-Combat wasn’t anything new.
-Team members won’t die. I understand they make sure you don’t get lost, but seeing one get hit 100 times takes away from the gameplay.
-THE MUSIC! Though the music in the scarier places is GREAT, the action tracks tend to be really annoying and got on my nerves a lot. I’d really suggest the authors replace it with something better than something bordering on…Death Metal. Ugh…this bothered me the most.
I didn’t really run into any major bugs in-game, so that’s always great.
Definately give this one a playthrough and see if you like it. Quality stuff for sure, though it has some small flaws that may annoy you. Overall = B
06 December 2007 at 6:54 am
By the look of the screenshots I could say that this mod looks quite similar to the “infamous” STALKER Pre-Alpha Demo v1114 (one of the leaked demos).
06 December 2007 at 2:30 pm
Looked good so far but when the speech at the HQ ended the game doesn’t load the next level but says it encountered an error and shuts down.
Everything before that went just fine, no slow downs or something like that.
Installed it to my HL1 folder, my OS is WinXP (which doesn’t like HL1, always leaves a hl.exe in the task manager).
Anyone got an idea what’s going on?
06 December 2007 at 5:55 pm
I could have sword that the Half-Life source code was released under the GPL… but after a bit of research, looks like I was wrong.
07 December 2007 at 12:06 am
No the HL Engine Code was never released, this uses some dodgy code for its engine enhancment. I get the feeling they took some of the leaked Source engine code and implemented it :/The level design is bollox. Looks good, but boy is it BORING to play through. Never many enemies either, so its not scary or tough.Plus it seems to rip off loads of stuff from commercial games. Whats up with that?
07 December 2007 at 5:24 pm
I’m glad the quality of the English translation was fine. If you spot any typos or other linguistic bugs, feel free to send them on and we’ll patch titles.txt. Just visit out site and pick “bug reports.”

I meant “our” site, locworks.org.
07 December 2007 at 8:15 pm
This is definitely one of the better mods I’ve played recently.Good:
The graphics are brilliant, in some points comparable to HL2
Story and levels are suitably atmospheric and detailed
Enemies are brilliant with some very twisted creations
Bad:
Hit detection. I could unload a clip into an enemies head and he would kill me with a single shot if I don’t have my visor down.
You can’t pick up enemy weapons which means you can often run low on ammo.
At some points you have to kill all enemies etc before it will let you continue, a pain.
Music. Can be very well placed but at other times just becomes overbearing and annoying.
Overall:
A great mod, took about 3-4 hours to complete, definitely worth the (rather hefty) download.
07 December 2007 at 8:41 pm
I DL’ed this mod and tried to play it, but when I got to the target practice range and fired a few weapons, then started to leave, the game locked up my computer with a sound loop (had to do a hard re-boot). This is the only mod that’s ever done this to my system.

Also, why didn’t the authors code this for HL2? The whole HL1 ambience is stale by now.
Len
07 December 2007 at 11:53 pm
@Len: It did this to me, but as soon as I tried turning and fired my weapon it went.
08 December 2007 at 12:25 am
You can’t go wrong with this mod. Especially because it’s short. It’s quick and pretty good for that time, like an action or horror movie
A single player add-on would rock.
08 December 2007 at 9:23 am
Oooh, no internet for a week & now I have something to play!
08 December 2007 at 4:52 pm
I don’t have Steam installed–can anyone tell me what directory to put Paranoia into so that I can play it? All I get when I install to the recommended directory is an interminable “Loading” screen in Half-Life…
Thanks.
08 December 2007 at 6:11 pm
C:\SIERRA\Half-Life
It will create a paranoia folder in the half-life folder. To run the game use the shortcut it creates on the desktop. If you dont want to run it from a shortcut double click the
!Launch.bat file in the paranoia folder.
08 December 2007 at 10:52 pm
good mod but still my favorite is Black ops
09 December 2007 at 4:53 am
short, but fun !!
09 December 2007 at 9:27 pm
I just tried this mod and I think it’s pretty outstanding in terms of technology; the developers squeezed the good ol’ gold source engine to the limits and came up with a great looking game. However, plotline and gameplay in general didn’t impress me that much.
While playing, I was going pretty much like “I’ve played this before…”
Finally, I noticed some annoying bugs related to OpenGl performance, my vanilla HL didn’t want to run; yet once I uninstalled Paranoia, things went back to normal.
Anyway, my final veredict is:
10 December 2007 at 3:09 am
This truly was a stunning HL 1 mod, graphics wise. I enjoyed the soldier’s antics and conversations. The guy playing the guitar was an interesting addition. I thought the base was portrayed very realistically, with a lot of attention to detail. Things started slowly – but that was the training phase. Gameplay picks up after you’re familiar with the base. I’ll play it again! So…
11 December 2007 at 10:01 pm
Thanks, andyb! That worked, and while I’ve only just started playing, I have to say the graphics are excellent.
12 December 2007 at 1:41 am
Awesome mod one of the best Ive played very atmospheric just a shame it was over so soon I was expecting so much more game time oh well perhaps someone will make an expansion.Great maps..
Great custom content..
I thought the gameplay was unique a refreshing way to play hl..
Story was good but could have been better felt a little piled together in some areas..
Very atmospheric and scary..
You can tell allot of time and effort has been poured into this mod a great way to see of the game that has given me more sp mod action then any other I give it 9/10 it would of been 10 but its just way too short.
16 December 2007 at 7:22 pm
I absolutely cannot get this mod to install. The default from the paranoia.exe file is :\Program files\Valve\Steam\Steamapps\user@server.com\Half-Life.
That gets an icon on the desktop which when clicked gives the message..cannot find hl.exe.
so I tried installing it into the same but added\Half-Life\paranoia..same error msg.. Then I tried :\Program files\Steam\Steamapps\mysername\Half-Life
I have no Sierra folder or Valve folder on my drive..What can I do to run this mod? Thanks
16 December 2007 at 7:47 pm
You are supposed to put in the path to your own half life directory.
Something like this
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\your username\half-life
or if you don’t know the path use the browse button in the installer
16 December 2007 at 11:23 pm
There is nothing you can do. The mod requires the Half-Life game, which is installed either in the Valve or in the Sierra folder. You can get Half-Life here: http://www.steampowered.com/v/index.php?area=game&AppId=70
17 December 2007 at 9:32 am
forget about sierra, valve, steam folders, just put the game in the half-life folder (where ever that is), if you have one.. if you don’t, install the game first
19 December 2007 at 6:21 am
Yeah, this one is very nice technologically, as has been mentioned… the Gold Source engine has been squeezed in ways similar to Poke646: Vendetta, except with not quite as much finesse (read: bugs abound). A few of the problems I had included not being able to run the mod in any other graphics mode aside from Software… which is a shame, as the game looks much smoother in Direct3D. But for some reason, Direct3D caused control errors. It’s a double shame because the HUD doesn’t display properly in software mode.
The “scary” bit was genuinely scary… *SPOILER* you should’ve seen me jump when that first mutilated corpse reanimated. *END SPOILER* The atmosphere of those levels was also pulled off really nicely.
I did think that all of the gameplay aside from that one section was a bit of a letdown… especially the anticlimactic boss battle. Still, this mod is well worth a playthrough. Kudos to you if you can get it to work properly. (Disclaimer: I ran this on my old Sierra version of Half-Life, because Steam for some reason has taken a disliking to goldsource on my machine.)
19 December 2007 at 9:14 am
The mod is meant to run in OpenGL mode only. D3D and Software video modes are not supported. Refer to the readme for more info: http://paranoia.level-design.ru/info_eng.htm#52
20 December 2007 at 3:02 am
Why thank you. ^^ I think my rating still stands as is, though. Yeah, I was just looking at that new dll file… opengl32.dll, or something of the like? And I thought to myself… “maybe that means I should run it in OpenGL.
GoldSource has never run smoothly in OpenGL for me before, so I tend to avoid it. And now I’m rambling…
20 December 2007 at 5:04 am
NOT SURE WHERE ELSE TO POST THIS…
I think one of the half-dozen Half-Life mods I’ve played recently has changed one of my video settings, and I don’t know how to change it back.
For the first time I’ve found most of the mods unplayable on my computer–I get the message when I try to start a new game or load a saved game: “The selected OpenGL mode is not supported by your video card.” I’ve never received this message before, with any mod, and I receive this message with mods I’ve played without trouble as recently as a week ago.
Can anyone help?!?
20 December 2007 at 5:24 am
For this mod make sure you have the file
opengl32.dll in the half life folder. If you don’t want to have problems run the game using the !Launch.bat file located in the paranoia folder.
20 December 2007 at 8:03 am
Just tried that, andyb. A file search turned up an opengl32.dll which I couldn’t find by inspection. I reinstalled half-life from the original disk. That went fine, but now the file search doesn’t turn up an opengl32.dll file in half-life at all.
Since now I can’t even play the original half-life (still getting the error message “The selected OpenGL mode is not supported by your video card”), do you know where I can find a copy of the opengl32.dll file? I assumed it was on the half-life install disk, but it doesn’t seem to be…
Thanks,
Shawn
20 December 2007 at 12:04 pm
Okay–I think I’m all right now. Paranoia probably changed the setting on my video (hate it when that happens), and since I found out and changed it back, everything half life is running fine.
