Introduction

I’ve been trying to upload some music for Alpha Prime but have been having trouble. It got me thinking about my favourite game music. I decided to limit the poll choices to the most popular modded games. My personal favourites are Chaser and Unreal Tournament , and I play them in the car all the time.

Game Music Availability

Whilst on the subject, I have quite a good collection of game music in .mp3 format and would really like to make it available via my Filecloud Server. Unfortunately it’s all copyrighted and I don’t want to break any laws. I think game companies should release the music to the gaming community because it’s just another way that players may become interested in a game.

I thought HL1’s was the most impressive. HL2: ep1 was another great ST, just a bit short. Kelly Bailey rocks. Though I’ll listen to just about anything…even from the good ol’ nintendo days once in a while. ahhh chiptunes. Gotta love ‘em.

Speaking of which, anyone visit OCRemix? If not, I HIGHLY suggest you check it out if you’re into game music. Great epic stuff on that site.

Final Fantasy. Cop out I know, but it’s the truth. Out of all the music you’ve listed, I only listen to the Q2 soundtrack, and rarely at that.

Truth be told, I’m more a fan of remixes. There’s the aforementioned OCRemix, and I also enjoy plunging the depths of Newground’s audio portal, but again, I’m a fan of Final Fantasy remixes more than anything else.

…hope I got those links to work properly.

Also: Several companies do release game soundtracks, but I’ve found that they mostly only get released in Japan. Which isn’t much of a problem if you download them, but again, that can lead to problems.

The problem is that most FPS’s don’t tend to have music that’s all that memorable outside of the game. Other types of games, most noticably RPGs, have epic, sweeping scores that are often hours long - again, Final Fantasy. I’ve got the soundtracks to most of the games, and they’re absolutely beautiful. Could you say the same of the soundtrack to Quake?

One (maybe two) quick question(s), if I may, to you, Phillip: I understand that you have to rip the music to Chaser from the sounds.fs file, but which tool did you use to extract them? Or were you able to actually buy a CD of music?

I picked HL2. It had a great variety, and picked up a few of HL1’s tunes, which were great on their own.

Doom 3’s certainley got some great rock and heavy metal music to it. I also enjoyed the music from Deus Ex (1), C&C: Renegade as well as HL2: Ep1.

Out of the realm of FPS games, I’d choose Starcraft (For the terran music.) and Command & Conquer: Tiberian Dawn. (AKA the original.)

My favorite game music has got to be the tracks “Sonicclang” did for Classic Doom3, put ‘em all on CD! I think it would be a great idea if they could be published! I also got all the original tracks from the old Doom series!

For the topic of FPS, I’d choose both HL1 and HL2, however I voted for HL1 since I seem to listen to those ones a little more often.

Above those of which isn’t a FPS are tracks from the Resident Evil series, more specifically, RE1, RE2, RE3 and RECV.

If I went by every game I’ve played an answer would be extremely hard. If I go by just FPS only it’s a lot less difficult.

The easy winner is Unreal 1, I like almost all of the tracks, which is special enough as it is, let alone for an FPS (”forgetting” to put it for an FPS music poll should be a crime punishable by death ).

Second place is the HL1/2/EP1 tracks (about 60% of the tracks are identical or only slightly modified, so they pretty much go in the same category); some of the best use of “situational” music I’ve seen.

Runners up are Far Cry, UT, the Halo games, Perfect Dark, Goldeneye and Doom 1 and 2.

I think that’s about it for FPS music.

Hey Jimbo,thanks! I almost forgot about that one “The Dark Side of Phobos” music tracks! I had DL’d thoes tracks when they came out in 2005. The track at the “The End” #22 was the best(hehe) bunny on a stick! Rough ending to the game! I got all of the original “Duke Nukem” tracks also, not too bad for the age!

Hell, I dunno. Since this is an FPS site, I’ll comment on FPSs only.

I quite like the Half-Life series’ music. Doom 3 and Far Cry don’t seem to have in-game music you can sit and listen to (they have awesome theme tracks, though!). The Halo series has some pretty good music, too. F.E.A.R. has nice moody tracks, although there’s a lot of ’stingers’ (very short musical cues).

Since I don’t have a single favourite game music, I’ll pick ‘other’.

P.S. Quake 1 had music? I never heard it. What kind of ’style’ was it and was it good?

I wish I had played enough of these games to know which had the best music so I can’t really vote on it one way or another.

The more electronic sounding, the better though. Like really great electro sci-fi music maybe along the lines of Tangerine Dream, the original Dr. Who theme, Cliff Martinez, etc.

So, if there’s a game soundtrack along those lines, then I would definitely like to know where to get them.

Skul: The sound effects and music for the game were composed by Trent Reznor, of Nine Inch Nails (within the game, the ammo box for the nailgun has the Nine Inch Nails logo on it in reference to this). Reznor’s work was one of the first major efforts to bridge the gap between “mainstream” musicians and gaming, and his title screen song has become famous even among the most casual fans of the game.

It’s basically a bunch of rock music, like Quake II only not as fine tuned. If you got the CD version of the game, it’s on that. Just make sure you have earplugs ready - it’s a bit loud.

Er…On the PSone.
Everybody loves Doom right? The PSone version was actually quite special. It had what is known as a loop player. That is, the music you were hearing was actually a mix of different looped sections. The beauty was this meant the music warped and changed as you played. This meant that the music was always different and constantly evolving. The only other game I can think of that does this is the first two versions of Burnout (Sorry, I know another non-PC, non- FPS). Do any forumites know of a PC FPS that does this?

I’m not sure if I actually have heard Quake 1’s music… wait, I think I did, once, and it sounded… well, pretty bad. I must have turned the music volume right down because of the quality.

Quake 4 has some good musical pieces. Goes along with the action very well.

I’m trying to think if Heretic and Hexen had any music. Probably did and it probably sucked. I don’t know, I can’t remember. In any case, a lot of older games on my PC like DOOM 1 and 2 just stopped playing music for no reason and I could never get them to turn it back on. Ah, well…

Honestly, you dind’t list any of them; then again, they’re all old games, and a few aren’t FPS’s.

Off the top of my head, my all-time favorite was the original music from “Redneck Rampage”. It fit the game perfectly, and was really good music.

Diablo and Diablo2 had some good tunes, as well as Duke Nukem3D. I always enjoyed the music in Caesar3 as well.

The rest of it tends to meld in the background, tho the original Quake score by Trent Reznor would sent chills up your spine, especially at critical points in the game.

If I think of more, I’ll post ‘em.

I’ve never played the game, but I recently checked out the “Cold Winter” OST (author ‘Mark Willot’) and was really impressed with most of the tracks. I actually heard a few songs from a long HL2 mappack, but I suggest anyone who likes to hear new things, check it out. Very good stuff.

Know what other game has an amazing/epic soundtrack? Jet Force Gemini. An old N64 game. Sounds like Danny Elfman did it when he was high on crack.

I feel like an idiot because I can’t possibly even answer! I’ve played a lot of top-tier games (Doom 3, HL2, F.E.A.R., Far Cry, etc.), but don’t remember in-game music at all. None of it.

I do remember that there have been very many times when I wished there had been music, but there wasn’t…

Maybe I need to visit with a neurologist?

In any case, any game that has hard rock or metal music in it would be a favorite of mine.

I like the STs from Freedom Fighters and from the Hitman series of games, though they may not qualify as FPS games. Actually, I like the music in Freedom Fighters better than the game play.

Every map and mods has a rating. This is a number between 1 and 5. By adding a rating to each map or mod you have played you help identify the Best Releases for each game.

So Much For Freeman is a Half-Life 2 map that hasn't recived enough attention. It's not very long but it packs some great design and even a story. With plenty of Play It Now! recommendation images it really deserves to be played by everyone.

Welcome to the PlanetPhillip Introduction Tour

This brief tour will highlight some of the main areas of the site and how you can get the most from your visit.

The Index Page
Firstly let's look at the index page. At the top of the page is the menu. It lists the most important pages on the site. Most of these are discussed in the tour.

You will also notice the search bar. Simply type in your search term and press return/enter. The results will be displayed on a new page.

Under this is the Daily Half-Life 2 Image. Each day I change the image to a new screenshot. The images follow the player from the very first moment the game starts to the end. By clicking the image you will visit the full size image.

Under that is a set of links to view maps and mods for each of the main games covered by the site.

Let us now look at the main post area. Here you will see the 6 most recent posts. If it is a map or mod you will notice the relevant game logo on the left. It will also display a short introduction about the map or mod.

Below this is the navigation footer, which is discussed on the next page of the tour.

The Footer
This is the navigation footer and contains plenty of links to various pages of the site. The footer is in constant development and as such I will only discuss the main sections.

Currently
This section displays the current weekly poll, an information graphic and some other topical information notice.

Activity
This section displays the latest posts, comments and forum threads.

Categories
This section displays the various categories that posts are categorized in.

Interact
This section displays details about Tagging, Rating and Commenting on the site.

Tags
This section displays the current list of tags used on the site. Perfect for finding mods with elements you like.

Official
This section displays links to important areas and shows other details about the site.

The next page of the tour discusses the Highest Rated page.

The Highest Rated
This page displays the highest rated maps and mods for Half-Life 1 and Half-Life 2. Each map and mod requires a minimum of 5 votes before it is displayed.

Please Rate!
This page will only be useful when hundreds of readers have rated the maps and mods. I therefore urge you to rate the mods, even the older ones!

Only HL1 and HL2?
Due to the lack of maps and mods for Episodes 1 and 2 they are not listed here but if enough of them are released I will add them.

The Dated Archives
This page displays every single post in chronological order, starting from the most recent. Only the title is displayed, which is a link to the full article.

Monthly Header
By clicking on the monthly title you will be taken to a page that displays the excerpts of each post for the entire month.

Released or Published?
The dates relate to the date the map or mod was published on the site NOT the date it was actually released.

Wrong!
Due to the large amount of maps and mods that still require updating, many are dated earlier than their actual release. This will eventually be corrected.

The next page of the tour discusses a mod page in detail.

A Mod in Detail
This part of the tour looks at a mod page in detail. Not all mod or map pages have same layout but all are being updated to match this layout.

About or Story
At the top is a graphic taken from one of the screenshots, underneath this is either the basic story or some information about the mod.

Basic Details
The section lists the basic details of the mod, including Name, Filename, Author and original Release Date.

Files
The file mirrors follow the basic file details, with the recommended FileFront server displayed first, with any subsequent mirrors listed afterwards.

Screenshots
The last section is the collection of screenshots which open with some clever javascript to overlay the open page.

Other Sections?
Occasionally there are other sections, including Features List, Installation Instructions, International Coverage, Videos, Panoramic Screenshots and Resource Links.

The Forum
Like most websites nowadays PlanetPhillip has a forum. It generally has one or two new threads per day, each created by PP readers.

Sections
The forum is separated into various sections to allow better organization and ease of use.

Strict Control
As with the main site, the language allowed is quite strict compared to other sites. Swearing is discouraged and no links to inappropriate sites are allowed.

You Create The Topics
The big difference between the main site and the forum is that YOU can create the threads on the forum. You can chat about anything you want, be it game related or the weather.

No Maps and Mods
One rule I am quite strict about is that of not discussing maps and mods on the forum if they have an entry on the main site. I do this because I don't want to split information for other readers.
