Ponterbee Station - System Shock 2

About

A well made mappack for System Shock 2 that doesn’t seem to have recieved much publicity. I’m looking forward to playing this and hope to reload SS2 very soon. I’ve included a few screenshots below and hope to have some information about the story etc very soon. I would love for somebody to review this mappack and post it under the comments. Stay tuned, or even better subscribe to the comments!

This mod has been updated and includes the following new features:

Many new textures.

New skyboxes.

Some of the new objects are frobbable and can be picked up.

New Sounds

Newly designed areas/new areas to increase playability/challenge.

More psi-hypos.

Custom objects fixed.

In fact, this is a full single player Campaign with a bunch of maps. Nicely, flawless done. It kept me entertained for around 8 hours. I.m sure this is the best effort for SS2 so far. I’ts a must-play for every SS2 SP Fan.

Christine has published a sequel to this FM titled “UNN Nightwalker”. After living through Ponterbee, the mystery grunt is incarcerated by the crew of the UNN Nightwalker. (The captain and crew don’t believe his explanation for all the dead bodies). The game starts with a cutscene. Gameplay begins in the brig of the ship when the power fails for the brig’s force field and lights. Bad things happen. Save frequently.

After browsing multiple FMs/levels for SS2, I’ve gotten to the point where I award 1/10 for any FM that loads in ShockEd and permits a change to Game Mode without any alteration, and an additional 1/10 for any mod that loads in GarrettLoader. UNN Nightwalker meets both of these requirements. On an out of five scale, it automatically gets a 1. Not having played more than the first five minutes to verify it loads, I cannot tell more than that. I’m waiting to finish Ponterbee before I proceed on to UNN Nightwalker, as the notes on Christine’s site indicate that the modules are meant to be played in sequence.

I would be willing to review and/or low-res screenshot UNN Nightwalker if it gets posted here.

Would you be kind enough to join the site and then rate the map via the official system? That way users will be able to see it on the highest rated maps page (Sidebar).

I played this a couple of months ago (christ, was it really that long?) and very much enjoyed this.

The new cut-scenes, brief and simple though they were, quite happily set the scene, as did the new voiceovers. I include a postscript of one, which should set the scene quite nicely:

“Last week when we received an emergency call from the von Braun escape pod for once, something was happening here! Finally we would find out what had happened to the von Braun!
Both occupants were injured and were taken to the medical section. The woman mystified me… she seemed to be human, but at the same time strangely not!
Somehow she infiltrated our computer system… and since then she’s only needed a week to kill nearly all of us…
What is she up to? Where are the lads from the UNN-Garrison? How do we get out of here?”

The maps are excellently made, very much reminiscent of the original SS2 and just as atmospheric, and the new items are used excellently - occasionally to hilarious consiquences (see the unexpected shipment). Combined with the new voiceovers and the new creatures which appear towards the end of the mod, this almost feels like the sequel that wasn’t made.

There are one or two downsides. A couple of the audio logs aren’t up to the same high quality of the rest, and I found there to be a dash too much ammunition, but these are minor flaws and shouldn’t held against the mod too much.

This is an excellent fan mod, and is easily worth the time to set up and play. Highly recommended.

Is there any particular order these mods for ss2 should be played?
