Single Player First Person Shooter Maps and Mods for Half-Life 1, 2 and Episodes 1, 2 and 3

So, Portal 2 has been announced and I am interested to hear your thoughts and ideas for the game.

Sounds to me that the next Valve “Box” will include Episode 3 and Portal 2. I say they call it the Blue Box.

Now, onto the game itself. I’m going to stick my neck out now and say they will include a co-op mod where one player plays as the character from Portal and the other as Gordon Freeman.

The players will need to use a combination of the Gravity Gun and the Portal gun to complete the game/levels etc.

At the very least there will be a strong connection with EP3.

What do you think?

  1. I’ve recently finished Portal (1) and I was actually wondering if there will be some mods or a sequel of some sort. I was told “not too soon” because of the inventivity/ingenuity of the game, the new concept of portals and how it was exploited to the maximum. But, hey, good news! Portal 2 is coming >:)
Having portals/the portal gun in other games would have been nice but really hard to implement; and I think they got such a positive feedback from Portal 1 that they had to do a Part II.

  2. Im looking forward to this. But I don’t think they will release it Orange box like with Episode 3. I think they said ina an interview they will release Ep3 in a different way.

And Ep3 is going to take a long time to release. They only had some artwork after the Ep2 release, so they are just starting out. I expect Portal 2 to come sooner.

  3. Lol it would be funny if the portal girl wakes up and looks down the street and sees gordon hitting a combine with a crowbar then continues down the road still swinging the crowbar then gordon gets hit by a car that gman is driving!

  4. right..

I see a new mod coming.

Anyway, if youre looking for extra Portal stuff, try this custom map made by a level designer from Bethesda (Oblivion):

    Quite challenging, but very good!

  5. And Ep3 is going to take a long time to release. They only had some artwork after the Ep2 release, so they are just starting out. I expect Portal 2 to come sooner.

The only released some artwork after Ep2. This is rectifying the mistake they made at the end of Ep1 by showing too much of Ep2 in the trailer, which ended up mostly being changed anyway. Also it was to avoid detracting the emotional impact of Ep2′s ending.

I’ll be looking forward to Portal 2 as I loved the first game, but part of me also feels that it doesn’t need a sequel, especially if [POTENTIAL SPOILER REMOVED]

    Here are some Portal links:

    Yes, you are probably right.

I played the free intro game. Most boring and pointless game ever. I do hope they won’t inject that crap into HL3.
Of course, everyone’s entitled to a different opinion.

Man, I’ve just been four-letter-word-blanked. HEEEHAH!

  9. Count_de_Monet: Do you mean the demo? I personally found I didn’t really fully appreciate Portal until roughly the halfway point when it takes a drastic change. It works best as a whole product rather than a short bit of gameplay. Each to their own I suppose.

But how can you label a game “pointless”? Surely any game is just as pointless as the next.

That’s an interesting remark: what is pointlessness in a game? can a game be purposeful? It would make an interesting poll.

I personnally get bored when I roam alone in a puzzle and I particularly appreciate HL2 and its best add-ons with a lot of interactions with other characters. The last version of Citizen is a good example of what I like. Somehow, HL2 is as much a fiction of the past (like the Warsaw ghetto in ’43 or the Budapest insurrection in’56) as a possible future for all of us. That’s why I think it is not a pointless game.
May be the ultimate HL2 would be based on side-choosing : would you be neutral (a questionable fun), resistance or combine? How many gamers would choose to become mutants?

Compared to these possibilities, boring holes in walls appears pointless to me, unless the teaser is not representative of the game as you mentionned. But then, what good is a teaser if I ain’t teased? The day I got Doom 1.666 free episode, I was hooked.

  11. The Blue Box? That wouldn’t be so bad. Why not purple? How about mauve, or lavender? Or perhaps, the beige box? The black package?

  12. Compared to these possibilities, boring holes in walls appears pointless to me, unless the teaser is not representative of the game as you mentionned.

I guess it’s just down to opinion. I thought the holes in the walls were a lot of fun and considering that’s what the game is entirely based around, I found the game a lot of fun too.

As I said, it takes a drastic change of direction and atmosphere about half-way through, although the gameplay remains pretty much the same so perhaps it wouldn’t interest you after all! ;)

I understand what you mean about games becoming richer when they have a purpose and I completely agree. I look for something deeper than just, for example, a sports game. Sometimes though, I like to just have fun and Portal was very fun.

  13. I have to agree with CrowbarSka — Portal’s objective that only kicks in properly around the halfway mark.

Portal is fun and involving and my favourite game in the Orange Box, but I have to say, I’ve not been hooked by any of the many mods — mainly, I think, because they lack a storyline. They’re simply ‘beat-the-challenge stuff.

I’m sure Valve will do something extraordinary for Portal 2. They could have a franchise as potentially lucrative as the HL series.

    I’m excited!

I also agree with MikeS. I can’t get into the advanced, challange and user-created maps.

Portal’s gameplay was still brilliant, but I think I found myself more absorbed simply because of the storyline, GLADoS’ ominous presence and the flow of the levels. Plus, the indurstrial/office sections gave a sense of direction and/or purpose, a pursuit of a ‘true’ goal(s) and what have you.

    Well, may be I should give it a hole…I mean a shot…

Actually, Phillip’s post got me thinking. Considering how successful The Orange Box was/is, Valve might do another one.

If they do, you have to then wonder how it’ll be configured. It’d be fantastic if Valve chucked the whole catalogue of Half-Life 2 games on this new box, plus Episode 3, Portal, Portal 2 and Team Fortress 2.

Perhaps Valve or a Valve subsidiary will produce a third ‘new’ game for this box? Left 4 Dead is out of the question. Perhaps They Hunger: Lost Souls could be absorbed into this new box? I doubt it, but it’d be a nice and relatively healthy addition.

Maybe Valve or one of their lackeys has got a new idea up their sleeve. Maybe they’ll make a bite-sized chunk of single-player goodness for us to enjoy, either a straight shooter or incorporating that aforementioned ‘new idea.’ Some bots for Team Fortress 2 or a Team Fortress 2 universe-based single-player game would make me happy.

So, what’s the colour of this new box? Blue is nice. Black is also nice. Either one of those would work great.

Maxrelax said Episode 3 is most likely going to be released in a different way, thanks to an interview, so of course, this could be all wrong. But it’s nice to think about it.

  17. I’ve been reluctant to buy the Orange Box until Ep-3 comes out. If another collection of games is released with EP 3 (such as TF2, Portal, Portal 2, and Ep-2), then won’t buying the Orange Box be a waste of money? I bought the HL2 package and then Ep-1 as two separate pieces of software, and then a year later, both of these titles were released as the Orange Box with additional games! For those of us who have followed the franchise from the beginning, we can’t help but wonder at this point if, financially speaking, it wouldn’t be better to just wait.

  18. Well, I’ve tried maxrelax’s map and I must say the difference between a map/mod and game is so obvious.. The golds are not marked, usually there was a trail between a button and the door it opened or between a door and an X and the number of order it was supposed to be opened in. I don’t know which button opens what and in what order I’m supposed to TRY and solve the puzzle which of course is easy but for some reason I got bored of it. Thanks for the links, PP, I’ll sure try’em soon.
Guess it is hard to top such a game. Hope the sequel won’t be a disappointment.

  19. I’ve been reluctant to buy the Orange Box until Ep-3 comes out. If another collection of games is released with EP 3 (such as TF2, Portal, Portal 2, and Ep-2), then won’t buying the Orange Box be a waste of money?

I have the same opinion and am hoping that Valve received enough negative feedback to ensure that titles will be competitively priced on an individual basis.

The Orange Box is incredible value when you take the number of games included but if you look at things from a slightly different perspective then things might not be as they seem.

Currently EP2 and Portal sell for $29.95 and $19.95, while the Orange Box is $49.95, which is more or less the same!

Now this sounds crazy but perhaps the games are over priced individually.

For those of us who have followed the franchise from the beginning, we can’t help but wonder at this point if, financially speaking, it wouldn’t be better to just wait.

    Agreed.

I must say the difference between a map/mod and game is so obvious..

Probably because mappers haven’t really got the correct mindset yet.

  20. How how are they going to continue Portal ?
She’s escaped & now what ???Don’t like the idea of combining Gravity & Portal gun – though the multiplaye option sounds interesting

However here’s a couple of Ideas:-
Gman turns up – say ‘finish what you started’ & she has to go back in to destroy eyeball depot (similar to HL2:EP1)
    OR
ANOTHER [Test Subject] is awaken by accident in another part of (older) complex when GLaDOS blew up (a forgotten experiment perhaps ?!?)

    - At the same time GLaDOS blew up, complex is brought to attention of Combine
    - Combine go to investigate (so now we have moving bad guys to squish)
    - New test subject has to survive with just the Portal gun on moving targets (What happened to the Androids mentioned in Portal – can’t we have them as well maybe these could be moving in fixed paths)
    - Test subject need to get DEEPER into complex to destroy the eyeball depot to prevent Combine getting hands on our technology
    - And perhaps, after depot is destroyed MAYBE we find out that this is what caused the interference on Gordon’s initial teleport experiment in HL2 (one of many questions needing answers)

    What do you think ??
