Single Player First Person Shooter Maps and Mods for Half-Life 1, 2 and Episodes 1, 2 and 3

Gordon Freeman must fight his way into the remote arctic prison, Angel Mogila. The level is a small area of roughly the same scope as a single area in a larger Half-Life 2 level. Consequently the module is a slice of what would be a larger level. This level features stealth gameplay using a custom designed night vision effect and custom AI controllers to enable stealth gameplay. The player can elect to rush the level at a higher margin of difficulty. Power Outage also features destroyable power transformers that knock out the lights in each section of the level.

You can still use it with MapTap once you have downloaded it.

Important Note

This map uses the “T” key on the keyboard as the toggle between night vision. If you already had the “T” key bound for another use then you will have to manually edit the Brawley_ML.cfg file. It’s not hard. Open it in a text editor (Not MS Word or similar).

MapTap users will need to go to the location of the account they installed it to. In my case it is C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\planetphilliphl2\half-life 2 episode two\hl2-ep2-sp-power-outage.7z, and edit the cfg file within that folder.

Manual Installation Instructions
  • Save the above file to a location of your choice and open it with a file archive application of your choice. I recommend 7-Zip.
  • Copy Brawley_MLRTM.bsp into your Half-Life 2: Ep2 Maps folder.
  • Copy Brawley_ML.cfg into your Half-Life 2: Ep2 cfg folder.
  • Copy nightvision_v4.raw into your Half-Life 2: Ep2 Materials folder.
  • Launch Half-Life 2: Episode Two
  • Open the console and type map Brawley_MLRTM.
  • Press enter/return or click the Submit button.
  • Play and Enjoy.

I quite enjoyed this but felt that the player should have been given the crossbow right from the beginning. Why have stealth mode and then have a very noisy machine gun?

Anyway, the level was well built with enough twists and turns to make it interesting.

I’m not a fan of stealth mode and pretty much ignored it.

he ending was rather abrupt but all in all quite a fun map to play.

Would be nice if the author allowed other modders to use the code created for the nighvision (I don’t know if it was hard to do though) and see some really detailed stealth gameplay maps.

Phillip, when I try to download this file, I get a 404 page. It looks like the filename in the download link is missing the “hl2-” prefix.

Not a bad coffee break length offering, but the night-vision didn

    Maybe?

The night-vision didn’t work either. The combat was boring; spawn a large clump of enemies around a corner and give you a load of grenades got boring. It’s a short map with an abrupt ending. The snow looked nice. The mapping in general looked alright. It’s a nice idea if night vision worked, although the gameplay wasn’t that fun, being stealthy was boring so attempting to kill them all was the next best thing. It feels like a guildhall release, although I don’t think it is; a)Night vision would work and b) A more unique/clever idea would have been used. (No offence!)

If more effort was put into this it could be a very good map.

    Maybe?

I don’t really like stealth games in general. This had some interesting points, but I found the night vision only worked when you loaded the map, it did not work when loading a saved game. Not sure why this happened but it made it less enjoyable for me.

    Did not like?

However much these guys paid for this guildhall course it wasn’t worth it…

… should ask for their money back!

    Maybe?

A stealth map really should begin with a stealthy weapon or unarmed if that is the mapper

I really enjoy the stealth dynamic on this one, altough i felt it was a pretty shorty map and also i felt it incomplete, imean did the CMB shoot the so called defector??, i’d like this at least to be 2 maps, because i don’t know i wanted more of that sthealthy dynamic, also i agree that if stealth is the main role for this map, then the crosbow should have been provide first like inside that container at the beggining of the map, hope this stealth code could be shared and we see it in some further maps or mods, but i don’t know if some mapper would use that dynamic again.

Once again another situational map like Runaway Train and Uplifted. This one however has more of a theme and story line which I actually enjoyed. In fact out of the three maps I felt this one was the best.

The idea of “hiding in the shadows” is nothing new to video games. Just take a look at metal gear solid to see how popular of an idea it is. However, this map executes the whole feature wrong. The idea of hiding in the shadows in games like MGS is essential because a single shot (or being caught) can kill you. In HL2 though (and in this map) getting caught means nothing to a seasoned Half-Life player. I found myself ignoring the shadows and running and gunning. Especially since the mapper GIVES you suit power it makes you almost unstoppable. There is no REASON to stay in the shadows or stay hidden. Perhaps if the mapper gave a reason this map would receive a higher score.

Aside from that though, the visuals are quite good. I liked the snowy atmosphere, the lighting was fantastic and I liked the way you could shoot out the lights around you. I think every map/mod should have some sorta of dynamic environment like that.

I couldn’t get the nightvision working, even though I installed the map properly, but I can see from Phillips screenshots that it was implemented well (sometimes nightvision can be horrible). Overall this map is pretty cool…

I enjoyed this map. Well balanced combat, just enough ammo, health and hand grenades. I ignored the stealth and night vision mostly because I wanted to play it like any other HL2 map. Having to navigate dark areas is one of the reasons I play HL2 mods. Also, the constant stealth message displayed in the middle of the screen was a distraction. Still a good map.

another shorty worth the play, as said previous the title and concept didn’t fit the gameplay, Stealth ? using nades and machine guns?

I use RDFG instead of WASD, so for me it was a bit annoying that the nightvision toggle on T overrode my use key. Not a big thing, though. As others have mentioned, the stealth gameplay was interesting, but requires dedicated roleplaying, as there isn’t actually any real penalty for stepping out of the shadows – unless you consider regular combat with Combine soldiers a challenge.

Indeed starting a stealth map with the annoying smg and not even my trusty crowbar is not very appealing. Having to blast or shoot every ammo crate just breaks the purpose. And I was also annoyed by the fact that ar2 isn’t pickeable and combine would start shooting randomly when I was near them or even with my back turned on them, looks like their algorithm needs more testing and tweaking.
The mapping is simple with some very boring small rooms, even the big ones look boxy, but I liked the outdoors and hope to see more of the snowy theme in future maps and mods.
I noticed a good autosave though, therefore it felt rather polished and no other noticeable bugs, decent combat, so give it a try.
