Smoothly executed, with a good layout and a good level of difficulty. Also nice to see a zombine from episode 1. I enjoyed it mostly. Except… this mod is a bit repetitive. Trudging down corridors looking for a way out of the slums can become wearing. But I guess the title — Slums — says it all. That said, it would have been rewarding to end the game with a view of the outside world instead of a fadeout.

Does it need to be played with HL2 or Episode One? Just noticed the comment about the Zombine. Looks nice from the screens… Downloading.

Following a reinstall I didn’t bother to download EP1 again (Not until I replace my GeForce 6200 that is…) and the Zombine is still there so I wouldn’t worry about it.

(The folder goes in your SourceMods folder either way….)

I’m with MikeS though and go along with his/her comments.

Due credit to the author though, even if I am beginning to think I belong to the school of HL1&2 players that appreciate the layout & design more than being cannon-fodder all the time!

Ah! A zombine. I see what you mean now. Still don’t remember any from Episode 1, but I was greatly disappointed in that one.

I thought this had a nice level of difficulty in it as there wasn’t a lot of weapons available & the first part, health isn’t aplenty either. The last part confused me a bit but after back tracking, it became obviously clear. Nice level designing & gameplay.

It could have been a map-pack though…….

While I know that when Phillip uploads Maps & Mods to the Filecloud server, and links back to them from the ever-growing index it soon becomes obvious which category they fall into, but on the front page would it be an idea perhaps to state either “Map” or “Mod”?

I guess as most of us probably would have a go at them in any case, but its just a thought…..

The older maps and mods used to have this as part of their title. Initially I did it to help the search engines but apparently it doesn’t make any difference and it also makes the titles too long.

Putting all that aside there is a new issue to consider. As you may know originally a “mod” meant some creation that had “modified” the original game. Perhaps new weapons, sounds textures etc etc. Now a Valve “Mod” means a self-contained mini-game (My term). A Valve mod my not contain anything new just be packaged.

I therefore decided to remove all reference to “map” or “Mod”, leaving that to the author to give clear installation instructions.

I know that’s not perfect but that’s the way it is at the moment.

fun for 30 minute but perhaps a little to linked to the same theme. I like the way the author put several posters (icluding a photo of himself) and the use of zombine was also a nice touch.
Other than that there nearly no puzzle and it’s just activating switches but for a first effort it’s enjoyable.

Thanks Phillip, I appreciate the fact that you not only run this site solo, but that you have the forum to run and a million other inputs and stuff to deal with at the same time…(How on earth do you keep the whole work/life thing together as well as all that..??)

My suggestion, and it was only a thought, was based on the fact that every now and then someone puts the folder in the wrong place and then flames the author or the hosting site for their mistake. (I hope noone here thinks I’m referring to them personally because I’m not, its a mistake easily made at times, especially without a clear ReadMe (I don’t mean the flaming though, there’s no excuse for it)) …and the fact that it might affect the choice of whether to follow up a new lead or not.

Having said all that there seems to have been a bit of a drought on HL2 stuff lately so I seem to download more or less anything to get my fix!

This mod was well worth the download - if a little too short. A few people up above were noting that the level design became repetitive, but I just don’t think it was long enough to become repetitive. That, and the flooded basement level broke up the monotony of the hallways very nicely.

It is very difficult, as has been noted, which I found as a definite plus. My only complaints are that it’s too short and - for some reason - it ran very slowly on my computer. I had to tone down several graphics options to get it to work right.

I liked it a lot. The only downside was the installer. It’s overkill to have an .rar to a .exe followed by a 7zip. Not really a big deal but i just had to point that out.

Agreed. I didn’t know the .exe contained a zipped file. I’ll try and repackage it when I get home later this evening.

I enjoyed this map. Yes, it was difficult. The lack of health and ammo at the start combined with close-quarters combat with Combine armed with shotguns was very tricky. However it had nice-looking maps and good use of lighting.

The first ‘puzzle’ had a me confused for a while. The vent hidden behind the crates just seemed a bit… cheap? Too well-hidden for the very first area.

Another comment I forgot to add: sometimes the level design felt odd and disjointed. The area was supposed to be an apartment block but the layout was all over the place with rooms leading into one another in no particular set fashion. Where was the central corridor dividing the individual apartments? The level layout felt like FEAR - room after room after room.

Could not fault set design and textures within, content and detail within sets was well arranged giving the feel of a slum and deserted living areas. Game play is limited to corridors and old apartment rooms for which the shot gun was made for. Other then luck of different environment settings there was not much on the downside, combat and combin placements were good with a few shoot-outs requiring repeated attempts. Lots of zombies keep you on edge and I found the playing time just raced by. Overall a short but fun game without any noticeable new stuff, a game some players may find too limited in scope and style, but I enjoyed it.

Honestly i liked this short 2-map piece very.
The mapper did not make the fatal error to pack
something epic in here,but focussed on closed quarters combat. With good result. In effect it
was a short but satisfying experience. I hope i see more hopefully a bit larger in scale.

Every map and mods has a rating. This is a number between 1 and 5. By adding a rating to each map or mod you have played you help identify the Best Releases for each game.

So Much For Freeman is a Half-Life 2 map that hasn't recived enough attention. It's not very long but it packs some great design and even a story. With plenty of Play It Now! recommendation images it really deserves to be played by everyone.

Welcome to the PlanetPhillip Introduction Tour

This brief tour will highlight some of the main areas of the site and how you can get the most from your visit.

The Index Page
Firstly let's look at the index page. At the top of the page is the menu. It lists the most important pages on the site. Most of these are discussed in the tour.

You will also notice the search bar. Simply type in your search term and press return/enter. The results will be displayed on a new page.

Under this is the Daily Half-Life 2 Image. Each day I change the image to a new screenshot. The images follow the player from the very first moment the game starts to the end. By clicking the image you will visit the full size image.

Under that is a set of links to view maps and mods for each of the main games covered by the site.

Let us now look at the main post area. Here you will see the 6 most recent posts. If it is a map or mod you will notice the relevant game logo on the left. It will also display a short introduction about the map or mod.

Below this is the navigation footer, which is discussed on the next page of the tour.

The Footer
This is the navigation footer and contains plenty of links to various pages of the site. The footer is in constant development and as such I will only discuss the main sections.

Currently
This section displays the current weekly poll, an information graphic and some other topical information notice.

Activity
This section displays the latest posts, comments and forum threads.

Categories
This section displays the various categories that posts are categorized in.

Interact
This section displays details about Tagging, Rating and Commenting on the site.

Tags
This section displays the current list of tags used on the site. Perfect for finding mods with elements you like.

Official
This section displays links to important areas and shows other details about the site.

The next page of the tour discusses the Highest Rated page.

The Highest Rated
This page displays the highest rated maps and mods for Half-Life 1 and Half-Life 2. Each map and mod requires a minimum of 5 votes before it is displayed.

Please Rate!
This page will only be useful when hundreds of readers have rated the maps and mods. I therefore urge you to rate the mods, even the older ones!

Only HL1 and HL2?
Due to the lack of maps and mods for Episodes 1 and 2 they are not listed here but if enough of them are released I will add them.

The Dated Archives
This page displays every single post in chronological order, starting from the most recent. Only the title is displayed, which is a link to the full article.

Monthly Header
By clicking on the monthly title you will be taken to a page that displays the excerpts of each post for the entire month.

Released or Published?
The dates relate to the date the map or mod was published on the site NOT the date it was actually released.

Wrong!
Due to the large amount of maps and mods that still require updating, many are dated earlier than their actual release. This will eventually be corrected.

The next page of the tour discusses a mod page in detail.

A Mod in Detail
This part of the tour looks at a mod page in detail. Not all mod or map pages have same layout but all are being updated to match this layout.

About or Story
At the top is a graphic taken from one of the screenshots, underneath this is either the basic story or some information about the mod.

Basic Details
The section lists the basic details of the mod, including Name, Filename, Author and original Release Date.

Files
The file mirrors follow the basic file details, with the recommended FileFront server displayed first, with any subsequent mirrors listed afterwards.

Screenshots
The last section is the collection of screenshots which open with some clever javascript to overlay the open page.

Other Sections?
Occasionally there are other sections, including Features List, Installation Instructions, International Coverage, Videos, Panoramic Screenshots and Resource Links.

The Forum
Like most websites nowadays PlanetPhillip has a forum. It generally has one or two new threads per day, each created by PP readers.

Sections
The forum is separated into various sections to allow better organization and ease of use.

Strict Control
As with the main site, the language allowed is quite strict compared to other sites. Swearing is discouraged and no links to inappropriate sites are allowed.

You Create The Topics
The big difference between the main site and the forum is that YOU can create the threads on the forum. You can chat about anything you want, be it game related or the weather.

No Maps and Mods
One rule I am quite strict about is that of not discussing maps and mods on the forum if they have an entry on the main site. I do this because I don't want to split information for other readers.
