    Smoothly executed, with a good layout and a good level of difficulty. Also nice to see a zombine from episode 1. I enjoyed it mostly. Except… this mod is a bit repetitive. Trudging down corridors looking for a way out of the slums can become wearing. But I guess the title — Slums — says it all. That said, it would have been rewarding to end the game with a view of the outside world instead of a fadeout.

    Does it need to be played with HL2 or Episode One? Just noticed the comment about the Zombine. Looks nice from the screens… Downloading.

    Following a reinstall I didn't bother to download EP1 again (Not until I replace my GeForce 6200 that is…) and the Zombine is still there so I wouldn't worry about it.

    (The folder goes in your SourceMods folder either way….)

    I'm with MikeS though and go along with his/her comments.

    Due credit to the author though, even if I am beginning to think I belong to the school of HL1&2 players that appreciate the layout & design more than being cannon-fodder all the time!

    Well worth the DL.

  5. Ah! A zombine. I see what you mean now. Still don't remember any from Episode 1, but I was greatly disappointed in that one.

    I thought this had a nice level of difficulty in it as there wasn't a lot of weapons available & the first part, health isn't aplenty either. The last part confused me a bit but after back tracking, it became obviously clear. Nice level designing & gameplay.

    It could have been a map-pack though…….

    While I know that when Phillip uploads Maps & Mods to the Filecloud server, and links back to them from the ever-growing index it soon becomes obvious which category they fall into, but on the front page would it be an idea perhaps to state either "Map" or "Mod"?

    I guess as most of us probably would have a go at them in any case, but its just a thought…..

    The older maps and mods used to have this as part of their title. Initially I did it to help the search engines but apparently it doesn't make any difference and it also makes the titles too long.

    Putting all that aside there is a new issue to consider. As you may know originally a "mod" meant some creation that had "modified" the original game. Perhaps new weapons, sounds textures etc etc. Now a Valve "Mod" means a self-contained mini-game (My term). A Valve mod my not contain anything new just be packaged.

    I therefore decided to remove all reference to "map" or "Mod", leaving that to the author to give clear installation instructions.

    I know that's not perfect but that's the way it is at the moment.

    fun for 30 minute but perhaps a little to linked to the same theme. I like the way the author put several posters (icluding a photo of himself) and the use of zombine was also a nice touch.
    Other than that there nearly no puzzle and it's just activating switches but for a first effort it's enjoyable.

    Thanks Phillip, I appreciate the fact that you not only run this site solo, but that you have the forum to run and a million other inputs and stuff to deal with at the same time…(How on earth do you keep the whole work/life thing together as well as all that..??)

    My suggestion, and it was only a thought, was based on the fact that every now and then someone puts the folder in the wrong place and then flames the author or the hosting site for their mistake. (I hope noone here thinks I'm referring to them personally because I'm not, its a mistake easily made at times, especially without a clear ReadMe (I don't mean the flaming though, there's no excuse for it)) …and the fact that it might affect the choice of whether to follow up a new lead or not.

    Having said all that there seems to have been a bit of a drought on HL2 stuff lately so I seem to download more or less anything to get my fix!

    This mod was well worth the download – if a little too short. A few people up above were noting that the level design became repetitive, but I just don't think it was long enough to become repetitive. That, and the flooded basement level broke up the monotony of the hallways very nicely.

    It is very difficult, as has been noted, which I found as a definite plus. My only complaints are that it's too short and – for some reason – it ran very slowly on my computer. I had to tone down several graphics options to get it to work right.

    I liked it a lot. The only downside was the installer. It's overkill to have an .rar to a .exe followed by a 7zip. Not really a big deal but I just had to point that out.

    Agreed. I didn't know the .exe contained a zipped file. I'll try and repackage it when I get home later this evening.

    I enjoyed this map. Yes, it was difficult. The lack of health and ammo at the start combined with close-quarters combat with Combine armed with shotguns was very tricky. However it had nice-looking maps and good use of lighting.

    The first "puzzle" had a me confused for a while. The vent hidden behind the crates just seemed a bit… cheap? Too well-hidden for the very first area.

    Another comment I forgot to add: sometimes the level design felt odd and disjointed. The area was supposed to be an apartment block but the layout was all over the place with rooms leading into one another in no particular set fashion. Where was the central corridor dividing the individual apartments? The level layout felt like FEAR – room after room after room.

    Could not fault set design and textures within, content and detail within sets was well arranged giving the feel of a slum and deserted living areas. Game play is limited to corridors and old apartment rooms for which the shot gun was made for. Other then luck of different environment settings there was not much on the downside, combat and combin placements were good with a few shoot-outs requiring repeated attempts. Lots of zombies keep you on edge and I found the playing time just raced by. Overall a short but fun game without any noticeable new stuff, a game some players may find too limited in scope and style, but I enjoyed it.

    Honestly I liked this short 2-map piece very.
    The mapper did not make the fatal error to pack
    something epic in here,but focussed on closed quarters combat. With good result. In effect it
    was a short but satisfying experience. I hope I see more hopefully a bit larger in scale.

    I've had this one sitting on my hard drive for a while and finally decided to play it. First off, please note that at the time of this writing, the installation process for this mod is still kooky. As grimjoe pointed out, it's a RAR containing an EXE containing a 7-Zip file. I have no idea what this was meant to accomplish, but keep that in mind.

    Onto the mod itself, it starts off in an uneasy way, both in difficulty and mood. Health and ammo are always at a premium, so you will find it very difficult, although it does add to the tension and overall creepiness of the mod. It is creepy in the same way Ravenholm was. Lots of claustrophobic corridors and blind corners and pseudo-branching paths. As Matt pointed out, it is reminiscent of F.E.A.R. level design. Both the difficulty and the scare factor seem to relent in the second act. Despite the fact that ammo is limited, the kind of ammo you do find is strangely chosen. I had no ammo for the SMG or Pistol by the end, but tons for the Overwatch gun. It would have been better if the author chose a couple weapons and really focused on those, rather than leaving me with an excess of useless guns.

    As far as aesthetics go, the mod looks fantastic for what it is. You'll never get a panoramic shot of the slums themselves, but the rooms are nicely textured and decorated and there is no shortage of props to go around. If anything, there are too many. In combat, I found myself getting caught on the odd crate, and we all know how much Zombies love tossing props at you for maximum damage. The lighting is well done. The portions with the flooded basement and the eerie blue lighting are particular stand-outs. The author even made attempts to properly introduce some enemies, like the Zombine. You see their handiwork before you see them.

    Contrary to other reviewers, I don't think the mod is too short. In fact, I feel it almost outstays its welcome. By the time we get a fair distance into the second map, it's clear that the author has run out of things to do rather than the tired "push the button" mechanic. Even the rooms and hallways start repeating themselves, only with different locks on the doors. Why are the Combine here, anyway?

    There were a couple segments in this mod that I didn't care for. One, at the end of the flooded basement, I believe you are supposed to stack a series of barrels and a wood pallet in order to escape. I tried several times and it's very frustrating. The physics are far too wobbly, the way you pick up items isn't always accurate (you end up smashing your little prop sculpture too easily), and on top of that, you can destroy the wood pallet. I didn't like that part. As we've seen in other mods, like Awakenings, stacking props never works in Half-Life 2. Don't do it. Two, the ending was a bit confusing and involved too much backtracking. This is a scenario where the switch is implausibly far from the object it controls, so the player would likely have forgotten it. Ways around this could have been to repopulate the way back with some enemies (to tell the player they are on the right track), or have the Combine monitor briefly show what just happened through a camera.

    Overall, it's a good mod. Give it a try, especially if you're looking for a mod that is both creepy and does the tenement housing theme well.

    phillip, links are work everytime if you use moddb or fileplanet hosts. And I let you know when Slums 2 will be released.

    • @Diolator: Filecloud was my file host and it closed last month. The older maps and mods, like yours, only had download servers on FC, until I copied everything across to the newer filehosts. I am not connected with ModDB, so I have no reason to uplaod the files to them and I feel I offer a better service (although less visitors) than they do anyway. FilePlanet requires users to register and wait in queues which is not very user friendly.

      If you contact me just before the official release I can provide file mirrors for you.

    Isn't this an HL2:EP1 mod? There are Zombine.
    Also, EXE containing RAR containing self-extracting 7Z containing game files. YUP.

    Slums is a two map Russian mod. I do think it's worth playing but the first map isn't as good as the second.

    The first map is extremely linear and kind of boring. I don't like it too much. There's really not much to talk about with it either. It has one vent crawling sequence (as far as I can remember at least) and is a mix between zombies and Combine. There are too many unopenable doors because the author doesn't want you to go there. There's some difficult close quarters combat but it's a bit on the unfair side.

    Map two is much better. It's much more nonlinear and has tons of places to go. The environment is pretty cool too. Once again though, not much to say. The only puzzles are to find buttons. It's a fun map but it's short.

    Overall, I recommend you play this mod. It's not the ideal short but good mod but it's still alright.
