Story

This addon is based on real historical events which took place during the World War II battle for Stalingrad (Now known as Volgograd). A troop of 57th infantry division stayed behind in the city after the Germans had taken it over. A few soldiers led by Gennady Lukovoi continued to deliver diversional strikes in the city and nearby villages which was very damaging to the German military machine.

After a few months Lukovoi was captured by Germans. He was liberated in 1945 by Soviet troops, but charged with being a traitor in 1947. He was executed by shooting on November, 12, 1947.

Note about the Special Version

This was kindly created by Vicpas, author of The Fortress. IT contains all the essential files with all extraneous data removed. It also requires a full copy of Return to CAstle Wolfenstein installed to work. All menu screens are in English. It is suggested that you play this addon with the video option: Lightning: Vertex(low). This should make the maps clearer.

If you start the game without allies (they should appear in the very first cut scene), then follow the following instructions from Wolfmap.

“If the game crashes in the second level while you leave the building, please try this:

* Make a copy of following dll’s: cgamex86.dll / qagamex86.dll / uix86.dll
* Copy the dll files from the Stalingrad folder into the root folder of RtCW (not the main folder!). Make a backup copy of any existing files with the same name.
* Start the game with the Stalingrad.bat”

However, this not a very well made set of maps. All 10 levels are very similar: bombed out buildings and lots of enemies. This is surprising because so much is known about Stalingrad, a great mod could have been made from it. There were fights in the dark in the sewers. There were underground galleries full of the dead. There was starvation but also full stores of food hoarded by overzealous quartermasters. There were civillians amongst the fighters, even when it was at its worst. There were airdrops of supplies which included tar paper and treacle. There was mutiny, madness, desperation, and no escape. To claim this historical event as inspiration and then ignore such things and deliver something as bland as this is disappointing.

There are other problems. After each cut scene, you lose all your weapons. The objectives are obscure. And finally, it follows that familiar Russian RTCW formula in which enemies are strong (3 to 4 shots with the mauser to take them down), accurate (they never miss, at any distance) and abundant (up to 50 in some levels, maybe more). Against this you have a few allies, a few weapons (nothing exotic) and almost no health anywhere (in the first level there is a total of 10 health available to heal you).

The charm of RTCW was its pulp science fiction (what did you do in the war? Well, I got chased around by fetish models while trying to prevent an evil doctor from raising an army of undead cyborgs). Attempts to inject it with realism, such as this and other similar releases miss the point both of the game and of the realism they try to capture.

I just want to point out that the above comment (Number 5) was made after using the OLD and may NOT relate to the special Vicpas version.

ALthough I agree wholeheartedly with the last paragraph. I want a combination of Sci- Fi and Nazis.

i played it without the easy way, and find it very hard, like the others rusians mods. i have a problem at the end(i guess). It’s the map when you go with many other buddies, to capture an old factory. After i kill the last enemy, an error occurs, and the game shuts down. And i guess in the first faze it was 527mb cause it had the rtcw engine, not only the maps. excuse my english mistakes.

Can somebody help me cause I’m kinda new to these mods, I downloaded this (143MB) file and came only as a .rar file. There is no way to open it, at least i DON’T KNOW HOW TO, can anybody give me instructions to use please?

I believe that’s the demo. The one I have is the full mod. I could be wrong.
