Author’s Note

“That was the first time I’ve worked on RTCW, actually it was also the first time I worked on a town environment; this is an outdoor level that starts into a calm area and leads the player through to a hostile fire fight.”

“The ambienence was a little dark so the player had to remember to play it with a low lighting or a pumped gamma. During a night in the middle of the second world war the level starts in Germany, into a town environment. This is a work that i made for a sh, so i had to respect a pretty hard deadline (the whole level was built in about five days of hard work). In the beginning the game was set during an afternoon of sun, but since i was quite astonished by those powerful lightmaps, i felt a strong need to stress them (perhaps this became a standard procedure in my levels). Working on this level i realized how single player mapping is technically harder than multiplayer one. Firstly, extending spaces was indispensable to avoid the level finishing too soon, moreover there was a strong presence of gameflow parms, mostly led by artificial intelligence scripts.
During its development this map made RTCW (and my pc with it) crash several times, I thought due to a too rough use of boolean operands in some buildings, fortunately i’ve been able to repair them all. The hardest thing in building such open enviroments was optimizing the compile time: i had a very long vis calculating time, in spite of optimizing it with clips. A final note on AI: those damned enemies hear everything, they seemed to leave their position with too much easiness.”
