The Last Survivor - Half-Life
After the terrible events of Raccoon City and the complete destruction of the city and all the evidences that could incriminate Umbrella Corporation, the S.T.A.R.S. (Special Tactics And Rescue Service) was shown to the mass media as guilty of the death of all the inhabitants of Raccoon City, being infected by an unknown disease. The Government was forced to launch a nuclear warhead of some kilotons of power to eradicate all the remains of the disease.
But the surviving STARS members knew that all was caused by Umbrella’s internal conflicts. Now, acting illegally, the S.T.A.R.S. performed the search for “White Umbrella” ’s (the secret and illegal Umbrella Corporation’s subdivision that designed the bio-organic weapons) laboratories, to find evidences of the horror of the T-Virus and G-Virus.
Finally they discovered the main laboratory in Austrian Alps. They assaulted the labs in a mission that could be qualified as suicide. It’s unkown why happened an outbreak while the S.T.A.R.S. were in the laboratories but they had to fight against Umbrella’s B.O.W.. Some of them died, and some of the ones that could escape and seal the laboratories, supposedly got infected by the virus.
The communication with Austrian labs was interrupted. After 8 hours, the emergency protocols were activated. Because of this lack of contact for more than 8 hours, Umbrella sent a squad of 4 men (official sources revealed that they were 4 but maybe they were more) to the exterior entrance of the laboratories (camouflaged as an ordinary storage for dangerous materials). They descended through the maintenance tunnels to the subterranean entrance of the labs, where they found a biological containment sealed door. After checking that there was no danger (every alarm was disconnected) they though that maybe an idiot activated the emergency protocol (which seals the entire lab and sends the S.O.S. message) by error so they just opened the door… liberating the virus, the B.O.W.’s and the workers who got infected. Once they were inside the labs, they got trapped by unknown motives. They fought against the creatures, but due to the lack of heavy equipment they finally died. Some rumours say that there was a survivor, the 5th men, the lost survivor, and that he has been fighting against Umbrella since then to redeem himself (taking into account that he may be the guilty of the worst outbreak of the 20th century, if not of the entire history). There are even rumours which say that he was been seen in Davenport City (Nevada, USA).
- Based in the MOD developing toolset Spirit of Half-Life. More flexibility in almost all the MOD development aspects.
- Atmospheric effects like rain, snow, fog…
- Enhanced NPC’s and enemies AI, now they are more real than never. They can see you, they can hear you, they can smell you, they will search you… you can hide of some of them, but others will torment you during all your journey.
- Bigger and more detailed maps than never. We’re using lots of models instead of bulky brushes to add more detail, just like Valve did in HL2, so you can expect a level of detail never seen in Half-Life 1.
- Forget about fighting against Xen creatures, in The Lost Survivor you will find a lot of “old friends” and lots of “new friends” never seen in RE.
- Totally new arsenal! You will be able to use 6 completely new weapons, from a classic Beretta to an Spark Shot Rifle.
- Totally revamped HUD.
- VGUI panels were you can introduce the passwords that you may find during your journey to open the doors. Now it won’t be enough to find the keycard, you will need to remember the password!
- First aid sprays that will help you staying alive against zombies hordes and the monsters created by Umbrella Corporation. Carry up to 2 sprays and use it in the exact moment to carry on fighting and scape from the horror that you’ve unleashed in Austria’s labs.
- New physics engine, the Novodex engine, which will allow physical effects a lot better than the ones seen in Half-Life and it will allow even “Ragdoll Physics”.
- Diary system like the ones in the Resident Evil games.
- Fully working computer terminal simulation system. Log in using the right username and password and use it as if it was your own computer!
- New particle system, called “Aurora”, capable of creating the best particle effects ever seen in Half-Life. Smoke, dust, fire and lots of things of an impressive high quality.
- Four A.I. controlled teammates, which will follow you during your mission…if you can keep them alive! As their superior, you will be able to tell them orders using radio commands. Ask for help, covering fire, or tell them to keep their positions.
The “The Last Citizen” project started more or less in May 2004. It was going to be a single player modification for Half-life based in the Resident Evil games created by Capcom, but with a totally new plot. We decided to “forget” the Raccoon City events, and go forward, creating the story of “what happened then”.
We started to create content for Half-Life and then, a few months later, Half-Life 2 came to light.
In that moment, we decided to make the MOD with the new Source Engine technology. But some people complained because there were still people with computers that couldn’t handle the power of Half-Life 2 and its Source Engine.
So, we decided to make something “never seen before” in the Half-Life MOD community. We decided to make the prologue of our story as a little project for HL1, and the MOD itself (the bigger project) for HL2.
The HL1 project is called “The Lost Survivor”. At the beginning, the “prologue” of “The Last Citizen” (when it still was for HL1), was a 10 minute long scripted sequence, which told you what happened after the Raccoon City destruction, at a world-wide level. That way, you were able to knew what was the situation at the beginning of the “The Last Citizen”.
But when we split the project into two parts, we decided to convert the “prologue” sequence, into a little MOD for HL1. That way, “The Lost Survivor” was born.
At the moment we are working on the “The Lost Survivor” project, while the HL2 editing community grows, the tools are being improved and we learn how the new engine works.
