The Headcrabs have evolved! Evolved with a variety of different traits. Your objective is to rid the space station OXYGENIUM of them and where ever else it takes you!
- Title: The Real 1 and 2
- File Name: thereal2.exe
- Size : 27.67Mb
- Author: Michal Jirouš
- Date Released: 01 June 2002
- Firstly, this mod is FREAKING HARD! No, seriously. Even on EASY one hit from a headcrab can kill you. No joke! Vicpas has created a new skill.cfg, which players can use to replace the one that comes with the mod. This makes things a bit easier.
- Secondly, the Training Room, contains The Real 1. Again, this is also FREAKING HARD! Play it at your own risk.
Simply run the executable file. Choose the correct path to your Half-Life installation.

good, something to do at work on monday

I don’t have much time to write a proper review but here’s a quick one:
I am angry! yes, angry because this could have been a really good mod but two things spoiled it; firstly the difficulty level. I played 90% of it on god mode and still had trouble finishing it. More on that a bit later. Secondly because there were some really nice section that were joined with silly tunnels that join them.
I “get” the idea that the author wanted to offer the player a “real” challenge (Pun intended) but he could easily have made it playable at the easy level and FREAKING HARD on the HARD setting. That way it makes it available to more players.
No, one interesting aspect is that when you get “hit” the screen colours, depending on which enemies hits you. It’s nice but it’s too dark, meaning you can’t see anything. Wastes the idea really. It could easily have been black, than any colour.
As Forrest Gump said “That’s all I have to say about that.”
Five Word Review
It’s to FREAKING HARD, ARRRRHHH!

This mod is the most difficult I ever played and probably there is no more difficult mod. If you finish it without cheating, you are a great player
02 March 2009 at 4:54 pm
I used the altered “skill.cfg” settings (courtesy of Vicpas) and played it on easy and yes, it is hard. For about 75% of the game it is hard but fair, but then I came upon a room full of invisible enemies that could kill you with a couple of hits. I don’t think they were meant to be invisible – on one attempt they all suddenly appeared – but I had to resort to god mode to get through which spoiled things. I rather liked the difficulty of the rest of it though – you have to use cover, lure the enemies out, be very accurate – and that suits my slow and painstaking style of playing. I’d say it’s definitely worth a play.

I thought that this was rather ridiculously hard, beyond the point of challenge and into the realms of cruel with saves after you kill 1 enemy. the hardest bit was the “flashbang” headcrabs. If they didn’t kill you, you were forced to wander around blind, at the mercy of any enemy. on top of that ameplay was repetitive and dull, with nothing that really set the level design apart form anything other mod.

The author of this mod is an evil person
03 March 2009 at 5:24 pm
Thanks again and have a nice day!

Hello, players.
If you don’t get to play this Mod, open the file “Skill.cfg” with Notepad.exe and change the value of skill of the monster that is difficult to kill.
I would like to see the author playing this Mod with the original Skill.

Perhaps someone can help … In map real20 I am getting the following error: ‘SZ_GetSpace: Overflow without FSB_Allowedoverflow set on server Datagram’. This happens with both the Steam & the Sierra versions of HL.
If anyone can shed any light it would be appreciated.

Hi, EddieLee.
Sent a email to the Author, maybe you got the light.
His email: stealthy at tiscali.cz

I think that error is related to online game servers/connections.Shouldn’t have anything to do with this mod.
Maybe try renaming GAME.CFG to .bak as thats the only file I see for anything online.
05 March 2009 at 4:06 am
It’s a bit too hard, in my opinion.
05 March 2009 at 5:17 pm
For me with my “skill.cfg” this addon is piece of cake
05 March 2009 at 7:05 pm
Andyb,
Tried renaming Game.CFG to BAK with the same results. It is now an intermittent problem — in the one section of map real20 I sometimes can get thru it without the error and other times not. Thanks for the help though.
I also get crashes most of the time when I load a quick save with a function key — I do not have the problem when I load from the console. This is with the Sierra version as I switched over from Steam when the ‘overflow’ problem started.
I sent an E-mail to the author requesting help

Norton AV 2009 ALERT !!!!
Regarding post # 20 — I found it was Norton AV 2009 that is screwing up the quick load function in HL. I not only had this problem with ‘The Real’ mod, but with running both the Steam & Sierra versions of HL by themselfs (no mod). HL-2 is NOT affected.
If I disable Norton 2009, there is no problem. You can run HL in the Steam ‘off-line’ mode when you disable Norton & disconnect from the internet to keep your computer safe.
Disabling Norton did not fix the ‘overflow’ error specified in post #14, and the author could shed no light on the problem. As usual BEWARE OF NORTON !
07 March 2009 at 1:31 am
No offence to anyone running norton but that thing is a piece of sh*t and not worth putting on a pc.

Some people are born cruel I guess! This is the only mod that gets me killed so often since i’ve been playing games…
Instead of grey hair, I now have white hair!!!
May the force be with you in your nightmares.

The maps are pretty OKAY, design-wise (there’s about sixty of them 0_o)… There doesn’t appear to be any story line except some text explaining you’re on a spaceship full of crabs. If you want the game to be playable, then set the all headcrabs to have 25 health, zombies to have 100 (there’s one zombie boss that needs around 5000-ish or maybe should stay the same, I forget), and aliens to have about 150 and give them all enemies a damage of around 5-10. This makes them kill-able early in the game when you don’t have enough ammunition.
I actually enjoyed this map pack mostly because of the interesting levels, a FEW interesting jump puzzles, and varied environments (spaceship, blackmesa-style labs, nature-type areas, and dungeony maps).
I say play later if you don’t feel like messing with the configs and if you don’t like really long mods.
21 March 2009 at 7:37 pm
I’ve played it through to an enclosed but outdoor area with two enormous airvents in the middle of the area, and a smaller covered compound at one end, and a lot of trip mines to collect at the other end……………
Anybody tell me what I’m supposed to do here?
I think I’m supposed to get into the small compound, but I can’t climb the wall, and I can’t blow it up
Upto now I found it quite enjoyable, bit hard in places but nothing a prudent save can’t get you past, and those headcrabs are deadly, but killable.
21 March 2009 at 8:32 pm
Can you say which screenshot is closet to where you are or the last screenshot you recognize.
21 March 2009 at 9:55 pm
To be honest, Phillip, I don’t recognise any of the screenshots.
I started by playing the Training Room and never saw the training room, but just carried on. I read a comment somewhere that Real 1 was the training room, and Real 2 followed, but what I can tell you is that my last saved game is called “real24 ” and I have played through from “real00″ — does that help?
21 March 2009 at 11:09 pm
Well, it helps me but not you. The screenshots from the mod I played were Real 2, so I can’t help you because I didn’t play the mod you are currently stuck in. Sorry. Maybe another reader can though?
21 March 2009 at 11:56 pm
Cheers! anyway, Phillip
Whilst I’m talking to you, can I ask how the hell do you find time to do all this? It must be like a full time job!
You have given me, and countless others, hours and hours and hours of pleasure, and as far as I can tell there’s no tangible benefit to you.
More power to your elbow __ and thank you.
22 March 2009 at 4:04 am
Use the technique of planting tripmines on a wall in a diagonal line, so you can jump on the tripmines to ascend the wall, which works even with the black strip on these walls. Your goal is the roof of the compound.
(Apparently my comment was marked as spam and I don’t have the Wordpress permissions to retrieve it, so I’m reposting without the image link to see if this gets through.)

Speechless is what I am!

Hi,
Does anybody have an idea how to overcome the cannons in Real20?
Thanks.
11 July 2009 at 6:52 pm
Hi there. I’m stuck in the catacombs. Can anybody please tell me what I have to do? I’m in the room with 3 coffins and it seems to me like dead end.
Thanks in advance.
