Single Player First Person Shooter Maps and Mods for Half-Life 1, 2 and Episodes 1, 2 and 3

The story picks up where The Xeno Project left off.

After fighting your way across Xen and escaping in a rocket, you are captured and imprisoned aboard an Earth vessel full of grunts, lead by the our old friend the Gman.

What happens next? I’m afraid that’s up to you. Good luck….you’ll need it.

Author’s Note

When you start out it will be little while before you get your suit. This means you are without your HUD and weapons switching is difficult. My advice is to just go with whatever weapon you end up with. There’s plenty of ammo so you can afford to shoot breakable objects instead of switching to your crowbar. You’ll also need to play carefully because you won’t be able to monitor your health. Don’t worry though, you’ll have your suit soon enough.

    Avoid It!

This mod commits one of the cardinal sins of game storylines: in the end, it's unveiled that the entire ordeal, including the events that take place in the first Xeno Project, "REMOVED". (No Spoilers please – PlanetPhillip) Combined with the fact that the gameplay in this mod is nothing spectacular and the fact that it portrays Xen as an actual planet (something that always really peeved me…), this one has very little redeeming value.

geekofalltrades, I totally disagree with you. Firstly, I love the gameplay in the mod. Secondly, the planet is not Xen, it's earth. Thirdly, you're spoiling the end for those who haven't played this mod by saying how it ends.

I can only repeat may comments as posted for Part 1, i.e. ditto Part 2.

One of the all time greats of the HL1 custom gene. I can not believe that the 3rd post, I am not going to mention his name, ever played this and his remarks are just meant for a reaction. Please do not be put off; I assure you that this is a classic that you should not miss out on. Furthermore, Part 2 the sequel is even better then Part 1, if you can get better then 10/10, again I think the unmentionable did not play Part 2 either.

it's such a shame that unjustified comments such as these may lead to people being put-off from playing the mod.

I somewhat agree with the third post, this mod does have little value, but it could have bean great if the voice acting was better and wasn't so dorky. BAD VOICE ACTING RUINS GOOD MODS!!!!!. Very few modders seem to relize that.

If bad voice acting in sprodic sequences (as opposed to all over the place) is literally the only thing it takes to ruin a mod for you I don't know how you play them.

how do you finish this thing ? I just shot the gman's pod with the laser turret and then nothing happens…

  15. Phillip says Play It!

I definitely enjoyed this more than the first one and overall I believe it's a slight improvement in quality.

I agree that the voice acting was a little off, especially Gman, but let's put this into perspective. It was 9 years ago and we didn't take things so seriously back then – at least I don't think we did.

There is plenty of variety in locations and game play but once or twice I wondered where I should go, especially after using the laser gun.

Anyway, I have to admit I was quite glad when it finished and the ending is so annoying, but again, 9 years ago that was probably cool.

There are two endings, depending on how good you are in the final battle, neither outcome makes much difference.

Do I recommend it? Yes, of course, it's a fun mod, but did I love it? No, I'm not really a fan of spaceship settings.

    Play It Later

Just like the first one, the sequel to The Xeno Project is of some really good quality. Is it as good as its predecessor? Well, no, but it's still very much enjoyable and easily recommended.

After the shocking finale in the first pack you take control of Gordon once again but now as a prisoner onboard a huge space ship filled with loyal servants to the G-Man. You have to escape from this confined prison cell and find a way to escape the ship.
The story is a bit more consistent compared to the first one and you have an basic idea what's going on and what you're supposed to do. There's also a bit of custom voice work that'll help to develop the story to the player and telling him what to do. This works well though one might argue with the overall quality writing and voice acting; seems like the author tried to go for a bit of humor but in the end it just becomes a bit silly.

The combat is definitely good in this one. Overall the difficulty is a bit higher than the original but it's still very balanced on normal and again if you prefer a challenge definitely go for hard.
As mentioned before, you're stuck in a cell with no weapons and have to find a way to escape. This particular part might be hard or even frustrating depending on how you approach it. Basically you're stripped naked even down to the H.E.V. suit and for a bit you have to fight human grunts and other captured Xen aliens with no suit at all. This can be hard as you have no idea on how much health you have left or how much ammo you have. Luckily you don't have to go on too long without finding a conveniently located suit in one of the lab rooms.

The level design is fairly the same as in the first one, i.e. looks good for the most part but suffer a bit from poor lighting in some areas. However, overall it definitely looks a step above its predecessor.
There's also a nice change of environment towards the end that some might not appreciate but others will definitely enjoy.

Overall it's a good sequel to the original but with a more consistent story throughout. The ending will probably leave some in disgust but personally I found it excellent and a good way to conclude Gordon's chapter. Highly recommended.

I played it years ago, and again today, the voice acting just makes me smile, an attempt at humour, it's ok, but I never did get the ending, shooting that laser, assuming that IS the ending, can't find anywhere elso to go at least ! It was fun overall and amused me for half an hour.

The Xeno Project 2 picks up right where the first one left off, with you captured aboard the G-man's ship. You start out in the ubiquitous jail cell with a convenient vent in it and things progress nicely from there, but you're in for a couple of twists. Overall this isn't quite as good or as memorable as the first installment.

Combat here is about on par with #1, you'll have a mix of human and alien adversaries. Overall I thought this was a bit easier – my main damage came from a couple of nasty falls. As in #1, exploration is rewarded with things like health, armor, ammo, and even extra weapons that you otherwise won't find if you don't look around.

There were definitely more annoyances for me compared to #1. Some of the buttons you need to hit blend in too well with their surroundings, making them hard to see. There are a couple of instant-death situations that are pretty annoying, and every single catwalk is apparently design for kittens only since they seem to collapse when you so much as breathe on them. It gets kind of irritating.

In all, this is inferior to The Xeno Project but it's a decent addition and wraps up the story nicely. Still worth playing, especially if you liked #1.

    Play It Later

Like the first one, this was another fun mod.

There isn't much difference between them except that this one is all set on a spaceship, there is voice acting and it has more of a story. The gameplay was very similar to the first one but this was a lot tougher for me although it was still pretty easy. There were also a few areas where I was stuck on where to go next although I managed to find them in the end.

The voice acting wasn't brilliant, but out of all of the mods I've played I would say that it's probably the best. To be honest I didn't think it was too bad and at least they tried. Just ignore that guy that says that bad voice acting ruins a mod.

The story was going pretty well until you get to the end. Not trying to spoil anything it was disappointing. The fight with gman was pretty nice though. Does anyone know what happens if you don't blow him up? As stated before there are two endings although they make no difference at all.

I thought that the first one was beter although this one was pretty good nevertheless and is worth a play. This one was a bit too long for my liking and sort of lost my interest towards the end of the mod. "Play it Later".

but I never did get the ending, shooting that laser, assuming that IS the ending, can't find anywhere elso to go at least !

That's not the ending, although I wish that it was. Look around the whole of those two rooms and you'll find the way to go. It is hard but after 5-10 minutes of searching I found it.

    Maybe?

I didnt like this too much, boring space ships (if you compare to USS Darkstar etc) and not much to do. Few small puzzle like things, but not much else. And ending was stupid.

Even has some voice acting, not that high quality, but I think its always bonus to have some.

Overall I think that prison part in the beginnin was the best that this mod has to offer, everything after that is meh.

  21. Play It Later

This is the continuation of The Xeno Project. Thanks to the actions of the resistance aboard the ship, Freeman managed to escape. But then he's on his own, because the resistance are more interested in looking at the posters of Xena than helping him.

The layouts and gameplay are interesting, but the design looks simple more often than in the first part. It's quite stylish though.

There are some spectacular cutscenes, and that's great: I like spectacular cutscenes.

Unfortunately, after some point the mod has a big flaw – darkness. It's too dark that it makes finding a way to progress frustratingly difficult. I felt headache when I was searching for it.

The fight with gman was pretty nice though. Does anyone know what happens if you don't blow him up?

Nothing. The cutscene when he is blown up is not shown and that's all.

In the end there will be nice Xen location.

There are two possible endings, but every one of them ends with a scene which explains that the story of this mod is, indeed, fits in the Half-Life universe, despite that it's non-canon.

    Play It Now!

When I first played this yonk's ago I gave up after blasting the Gman and having read the post of others after playing it again, it was a problem others had as well!

Again the prison sequence was a pain, but this time it was because of all the crawling through air-shafts, after finally escaping I could get on with the game. The start without the HEV suit wasn't too much of a problem as I simply use the mouse-wheel and left click to switch weapons. Once you have the suit then you can start to get going. At times it was weird on the first ship because BM style settings on a spaceship look a little out of place to me. So! Got all the way to zapping the Gman and where to go next? I explored the whole of the area and no apparent way was forthcoming , when I found the way I was a little peeved as even even with the torch on you don't see it until you are right next to it!!! looking at the screen shots after finishing the game I can report there ain't a spoiler there.

Overall a good mod to play and worth your time but all I can say about the ending is, where can I get pyjama's like Gordon's?

    Play It Now!

Here we have better qualty than the 1st part altough the story is a big mess cliche in the way it was only a DREEAM!!! so don't bother for that part, here the author set clear that he improoved his sikills adding voices to the characters in the mod, the maps are clean and some of them clever but maybe really dark in the xenian ship invassion part, also both XP1 & 2 use some cool classic assets from hl1, as the fan that makes u fly towards the air vent or the not much seen this days, gigant tentacle (found it in cmb overwiki) yeah that who kills u if u make noise, so that's another good point for the mod, overall is entreteining and medium size to play it so u can play it and have some good old battles full with nostalgia the HL1 old way, yes sir!

Also I didn't know Gina Cross or the other lady that seems to here were married with Gordon!!!, oh what a crazy story this gusy made!!, crazy but funny indeed!!

    Play It Now!

Having checked first my personal notes made when this mod was first released, and then re-read my original post here, I have modified my views to a degree.

Having now played Project 1 and 2 back to back, I now consider Project 1 the better play.

Project 2 for it's time was outstanding with the space craft sequences adding to the mods uniqueness at the time. Now with the advance of time the re-play for me throw up some faults and irritations, I never enjoyed any of the low gravity sequences this time round, preferring to noclip at times just to accelerate the progress that at times got bog down. Also I did not like the dark red toned lighting which made progress and looking for details hard, leading to much wasted time and more irritation.

Like others I too found the way ahead difficult to figure out after shooting the escape pod, again this was mainly due to lighting effects and a very obscure duct location.

The voice acting did not bother me in the least; in fact I enjoyed its quirkiness which along with the cut-scenes added to the fun.

While Project 2 is still a great mod for it's time, it has aged down the years and does not hold the magic and thrill it did 10 years ago, however, it's well worth a Play it Now and for those that don't like quirky voice acting, then Play it Later.

The review of the first part of this series was Jiang's first here at Ten Four. While it was a decent attempt, it just didn't function as a whole and had some rather patchy gameplay. Almost exactly five months on, Loki's Missions bring us the sequel, following directly on from the original.

As you may recall if you picked up the first installment, it ended with you surrounded by scores of grunts, seemingly doomed. Well, it turns out that they settled for just jailing you instead of gunning you down as you might expect and, naturally, you have to escape.

Xeno 2 starts out very strongly with some solid levels and good combat. The cutscenes, though not as polished as some out there, are good and set the stage nicely. After breaking out of your cell, it's a long battle through the innards of the ship until a twist in the plot catapults you into another dimension – though one you'll likely be quite familiar with.

    Maybe?

I'm a bit torn on this mod; as some people have already indicated, I wish it had ended at the laser gun scene where you can shoot the Gman's escape pod, as it quickly goes downhill from there.

I did like some of the battles and scenes in the mod, and felt it was a definite improvement over the original, however it suffered from the same pitfalls of confusing level design and bad level change locations.

An example of a scene I really enjoyed was the gargantuan scene from the high ground, or more particularly my solution to it. I did not have enough explosives, so I had to grab the rockets near him, so I had the clever idea of distracting him with a snark so I could walk up to him. I was pretty happy when I pulled it off. There was another scene with a door you could hold up with a valve, with baby headcrabs on the other side. The solution of opening it up a bit and throwing in a grenade or snark, and then opening it later to go through once the threat was eliminated, was very cool indeed.

I also enjoyed the voice acting in this mod. While a lot of people have complained that the acting was bad and poorly done, I am always happy to see voice acting in a mod rather than overused lines from HL. It makes the mod more unique and identifiable.

The low gravity sections in the turning point of the mod that I mentioned, made this mod a big disappointment though. The low gravity scenes were really poor, and there was way too much enemy clutter with no strategic way of taking out enemies. The story ending was also lakcluster. If it hadn't been for this last 20 minutes of the mod, it probably would have gotten a Play it Now from me.

This mod is fun up to a certain point, but it certainly isn't perfect.

    Play It Now!

@ the start of the game I look thru the yellow tinted force field waiting for some calamity to set me free from prison. Something like a major accident or a rescue attempt…instead I get a message for me to move the lockers and break the grate Dumb@$$, WHA!! Nice start for a mod, to insult your players. How utterly stupid for me to not realize how logical it was to be put in the only cell w/ lockers that just happen to "hide" the broken grate which spontaneously breaks apart after moving the lockers!! This insulting message @ the beginning of the game left a bitter taste in my mouth even now. the mod is quit enjoyable & has a lot of positives (not xena; I thought it was a guy in the poster!) and fun especially towards the end. I luv the ship to ship transfer via the tractor beam….would have been lovely except for that insulting message that darken the whole mod. The voice acting could have been better; the dialog definable needs to be better. Seriously Xena is beautiful, on what planet?!? I liked the low gravity areas of the game. overall worth your time despite the RUDE beginning.

A terrible sequel. The first part in the human spaceship was very nice, with a balanced combat and an excellent mapping. At a certain point you must kill Gman while he escapes with an escape pod. I was confused and didn't use the cannon fast enough. I had to replay the level! The part in the alien spaceship was terrible and unbalanced. I didn't like it. The voice acting was awful…oh and the ending was crazy. Funny but crazy. I give this mod a 7/10.

    Play It Now!

This was SO close to getting a personal favorite.

The mod picks up from where the first mod ended. So, we start in a jail. Though, the beginning is VERY HARD. The HEV suit is after a fight in the cells with the guards AND the aliens that are in the cells. If you manage to survive, then the mod starts to get REALLY good.

The combat is great. Enemies are fairly placed except for 2-3 moments.

The spaceship setting, you may not find it good, but I find it amazing. It also reminded me of USS Darkstar.

Though, the thing that really annoyed me, was when some explosion happened and the lighting was AWFUL. I couldn’t see a thing.

If you ignore all the bad things, this is an AMAZING mod.

    Play it now!
