  1. Phillip says Play It!

This is a great collection of maps that I oh so nearly managed to beat without cheating. There are some interesting puzzles, which is why I enjoy playing Portal maps and some interesting jumps, which is one aspect I dislike about the game mechanics.

I don’t know at what point the multiple paths start and I only played enough to get one ending which was a big let down, although I hear the other is pretty cool.

I got stuck once in some fluid that I couldn’t get out of and in the same place there is a graphical bug that allows you to see what’s beyond the walls, but besides that it was fun.

I only go one secret cake and would like to have know how many there were.

All in all, worth your time and players of similar standard to me should be able to beat it without cheating, assuming you have a little more patience.

I had actually forgotten just how obscure, sometimes outright hidden, some paths were in this map pack. Fortunately the puzzles are excellently crafted, and provide a lot of “behind the scenes” exploration that really make you feel like you’re going outside of the box (even though in reality, you’re merely inside of a bigger box) This mod also does an excellent job of using GladOS’s original lines in new settings that give them entirely different meaning.

The branching paths also add an incredible amount of replay value. I actually went through and made separate save files for every single branch I could find so I could pretty much explore everything. All the branches basically weave back together towards the end, and then split off into 2 separate routes. One provides a “good” ending and the other provides the “bad” ending. While neither one is particularly climactic, you should be able to tell right away if you got the “bad” ending.

The only flaws that I can point out about this mod is that there are a few cases where even when you know roughly what you need to do to beat a map, the actual execution can easily be failed, sometimes resulting in your outright death. There is another case I came across where I missed a ledge I was jumping to, and wound up on an outcropping, but it was impossible to get anywhere from that outcropping without dying. The worst case was:

    Spoiler Inside SelectShow

Despite the minor niggles, the map vastly outclasses any other Portal Mod or Map pack that I’ve ever seen, both in terms of amount of content, balance of difficulty, scope, replay value, and interesting storytelling (sort of) and map design. The only possible competitors I see for this position are The Flash Version Map Pack (of which I take issue with the ending battle being distinctly UNportalish) and Portal: Prelude (Of which many other people were turned off by the intense difficulty)

Darnit, I forgot to mention the fact that there are 3 sections to this map pack:

Underground Project One – does NOT have any branching paths.

Underground Project Two – Begins where Underground Project One ends. Has branching paths.

Underground Training – Teaches some new game mechanics that are important for getting through much of Underground Project Two, and possibly a little bit of the end of Underground Project One.

    Think Twice

I played this mappack through with cheating. Why? Because too many bugs happened to me.The beta testing must have been a lacking part of the development progress. Many textures are not aligned and even more leaks in the map make you see through the chambers. Many surfaces are not able to carry a portal for no reason. The Designing part just doesn’t feel right at all.

If you played through Portal you don’t have to try this. Many chambers are just slightly change from the original. The test are all well known except of the “underground” parts.I think I’ve never played a map where you fall this much down, which doesn’t need to be a negative thing.Often the level mechanics even repeat, like throwing a chair into a windows for example.

I found 2 cakes, but these were static so they were there for no good reason. The one cake is a good showcase for the bad interior design.Just look at the blood on the wall and you will see what I mean.[http://bit.ly/9BG5hR]

I have to admit, I did notice one section of a wall that was missing a texture and you could see through the wall, but that was only the one section and it only let you see back into the area you just came from. Also considering just how detailed some of the maps got, especially the ones that went outside of the standard testing areas, it only makes sense that some of those sections wouldn’t be completely obvious where portals can and can’t be placed.

As for the similar puzzles, doesn’t that only make sense? You can’t expect every single puzzle to be completely different when you have as many as there are in this map pack. The similar puzzles give people a few familiar ones so they don’t feel like they’re getting stumped at EVERY section. I can’t believe you got the entire way through the map pack without running across at least a handful of original maps.

That much I can leave up to personal differences. But I am a little curious what was up with this comment:

Often the level mechanics even repeat, like throwing a chair into a windows for example.

Wait, why do you say this like it’s a bad thing? Isn’t “holding a button down with a weighted cube” a game mechanic that repeats even in the original game?

Well, the misaligned textures are in every part, even in every map.You don’t eve have to look that close.

I totally understand your argument with the similar puzzles, but what I wanted to say with the similar puzzles was that nearly every chamber from the original Portal was repeated in this mappack. The most obvious example was testchamber 19 (i.e.) which was copied like 1:1. When I create a map I don’t want it to be a copy of something that already exists only which a few added brushes.

About the mechanics thing: I have to admit that the chair part wasn’t a very good example, but the “jump in one portal throw the other one on the wall behind you and repeat that until your jump distance is long enough” move is. It was nearly in every chamber.

Overall I just think the mod is a bit boring. It’s doesn’t introduce a new way of thinking or puzzling like a good portal map should do (i.e.PROTOTYPE PYRAMIDE by tman3000).

  4. Personal Favourite

I am going to give this one a Personal Favorite simply because it challenged me. And I, for one, enjoy a challenge. Some of the maps seemed impossible, until you realized it was under your nose, or, in a few cases, right above your head.

I would definitely make a Portal difficulty section though, because this was HARD.

  5. Excellent! I can’t fault what I’ve played so far, although I’m stuck at the cake (screenshot 31). I’m gonna dive right back in now to see if I can figure it out. Meanwhile, if anyone wants to reply with the solution, don’t let m stop you! :)

    • *facepalm* Well, at least I’ve finished Part One now! Hope Part Two is just as good!

LOL. Keep in mind, Underground Project Two has several branching paths. Good Luck.
