Single Player First Person Shooter Maps and Mods for Half-Life 1, 2 and Episodes 1, 2 and 3

This is the second time I have announced the closure of the site, but this time I mean it. You may have seen other posts about projects I have dropped and the closure of VC, is just another one of those.

In the past I had a group who were interested in taking over the project but things didn’t work out. This time I will just let the domain name expire and not update the site any more.

I got no thanks from the community for the effort I put in and a simple list of sites I like will be sufficient for 99.9% of readers.

If anybody wants a zipped file of all the images just ask.

Whilst adding new sites isn’t really hard, it’s just another distraction and I would rather spend the time doing other things.

I’ll be honest, this is probably for the best. When I saw this on the main page, my first reaction was “what’s closing?” and my second reaction was “oh wait, I think I remember it now. When did you find out it was closing?”

Then I remembered that it was that one little link I’ve bumped into accidentally a few times but never got around to actually exploring, since I’m not really interested in much beyond mods right now, and most news I’m interested in about Valve I just hear directly from valve.

      Agreed Grey Acumen.
I vaguely remember it, but I have most of my Valve-related sites bookmarked and only visit a few.

I agree with that for sure.
I have all the worthwhile sites tucked away in ‘Favourites’. Anybody else interested would probably have done the same by now.
All we need to know is if you come across any new sites but I don’t see that happening anytime soon. An occasional Search solves the problem anyway (if a touch tedious).

  3. What is Valve Community? :S

    • WHy don’t you just visit the site? Anyway, ValveCommunity.Com is a database of websites that cover Valve games. I wanted it to list hundreds of websites and had big plans for some cool features but I just never had the time.

Whilst it wouldn’t be a site that people visited regularly, I hope it would develop a reputation as an excellent resource.

    • Don’t forget my offer to give you the domain name if you want it to use for your site. I feel that it fits your objective very well.

Well, I liked the concept, but it was poorly executed imo. It was just a glut of vaguely Valve-related sites without any sort of organization.

Now, if it just had a slim list of useful Valve sites, and a Twitter and/or RSS feed announcing general Valve news, mod news, and maybe Steam sales, it’d be much more useful.

I would love to be able to get all my Portal 2 info, hear about new Portal/HL2/L4D maps/mods, and hear about the new Black Mesa media release all in the same place.

I believe that’s unfair. True, a lot of the sites were only vaguely related to Valve but that doesn’t mean the content wasn’t worth viewing. The idea that there wasn’t any sort of organisation is wrong. The sites were divided into the games they coverd and had extensive tags, making it easy to find content you liked. How would you ahve suggested I organise it?

What would be the point of just a few sites? Every webiste has a list of site they feel useful to their readers but there was no comprehensive list, and this was one of the opbjectives of the site.

There is a saying in Englnad If my aunt had a dick, she would be my uncle
The site was never intended as a news site and saying it wasn’t very good becasue it didn’t have that is like saying the BBC website is bad becuase it doesn’t list mods.

I have tried many times to interest other webmasters in the exact type of news site you mention but it would take a lot of work to keep running. Setting it up would be the easy part, but continually adding news would require a group of people around the world to ensure eveyrhting is posted as soon as possible.

In conclusion, I don’t have a problem with you not liking the site but at least judge it on what it is and what it tried to do, not what you want from another type of site.

  5. Hi Phillip.

I always liked the idea of a proper Valve Directory and this was it. Great stuff on your network of sites, that’s fantastic dedication. When I was running ozsource.org we linked back to valve community as a source of everything Valve related, much appreciated.

If you are still considering someone take the site over I wouldn’t mind doing so as it would seem a shame to let it go, otherwise I’ll take a zip of the images at my email addy whenever you get the chance.
