Wail of Death – Half-Life 1

Story

The year is 2194…
Humankind has been wiped out because of the Atomic wars on Earth. Over time the climate began to change, the Earth's crust became scorched and a thick layer of sulphur caused the few remaining humans to mutate. These humans began to practice Demonic worship. You play Angelic, the last remain true human, whose task is to seek the energy which will not only kill the Demons but also save the Earth. This energy can only be found in the Demons' hidden headquarters within the only existing city: Artagarath.

  2. Carolyn Says:

I got this installed, and recognized in my games list. When I Launch it, it goes to the main screen then crashes back to desktop. A solution?

Hi Phil, I’m back ;-) just installed wail of death, runs fine, it’s bloody hard though, found the axe, dispatched the two zombie style grunts, got their guns, then their mates join in and I run out of ammo! Is it supposed to be this hard? Any hints/tips would be greatfully received, cheers. Good to see your site is expanding, you’re doing a really good job, nice one :-D

I just did a fresh install of Win XP. I reloaded Steam and it put Half Life on my system complete…didn’t use my disk. Now the Valve directory is not there, but the game plays. Also, in my Steam dir. there is no folder for Half Life, only HL2 and some Valve mods. So, I can’t get WOD installed…no Half Life folder to put it in. How can I get Half Life mods installed now?

  5. Carolyn Says:

Cancel that…I played Half Life for a few minutes then checked and there is now a Half Life Folder, so I moved the WOD folder into it. The WOD game now shows up on my Steam Games Menu, but when I lauch it, I’m having the same problem as before my fresh Win XP install – it crashes back to desktop after the first screen appears, the one where you select New Game or Load Game.

  6. Mel Says:

Downloaded and played ok without any bugs. The screen shots tell you all you need to know about the Design and textures, big empty towering interiors. Lots but easy combat, new skin ok but very iffy scaling throughout, it’s short, linear, easy and all over very quickly. Unless your are a lover of Quake like design and textures I would not download this very unlike HL1 game.

  7. Heyzors Says:

I’m having the same problem as Carolyn. And for the people just ignoring what she’s saying and posting something random about the game it would be nice if you could help us with a solution. For example…what did you do that got the game to work?

  8. Carolyn Says:

Thanks for renewing this query. I would love to play this mod. Can anyone tell me how they got it installed and working?

  9. andyb Says:

my pc is apart for cleaning at the moment but i did try it on steam and it failed.i will try it on regular half-life when i get my pc up tonight/tommorow

  10. Heyzors Says:

How do you have both half-life 1 versions? Did you buy it from Sierra and Valve?

  11. AI Says:

To #13 —- If ya play this mod and most of the other HL1 mods and maps on Serria (regular) version, I don’t think you’ll have the problems reported when trying to run the maps and mods on the Steam version!! None of them ever show up in “my games” on Steam so I gave up and reinstalled “regular” and now NO problems!! I bought my copies back in “98″ and I’m sure they can still be found on E-Bay or others!! To Heyzors and Carolyn, this might be a better solution for both of you to pursue, but that is only my thoughts!!!

  12. AI Says:

To add to above I just did a quick search on E-Bay and found HL1 amoung others!!

  13. andyb Says:

Heyzors i purchased the original when it first came out and with steam it allows me to play both versions along with opposing force and blueshift.should have the pc up and running in a couple hours to try this mod.

  14. andyb Says:

still workin on my pc but i did tinker with it on the steam version of half life and now its working so far.
what i did was copy the contents of the wod folder to Steam\SteamApps\username\half-life\valve and whenever it asked if you would like to overwrite a file i selected no.then i deleted the client.dll from the valve\cl_dlls folder.after that go back to the wad folder and rename the config.cfg to userconfig.cfg and copy it to the valve folder. only problem i have seen is the keyboard options doesnt seem to appear for me so i edited the userconfig to meet my needs.

this was just a quick fix as i dont have alot of time today to play around.

to play the mod just launch half-life via steam and type map wod in the console.hope i didnt forget something.

  15. Heyzors Says:

Hmmm…I guess I’ll try that (andyb). As for A.I., I really appreciate the help (especially because you are one of te few who tried) but I don’t want to play this mod enough to actually buy Half-Life again.

  16. Heyzors Says:

POOPAGE! IT STILL DIDN’T WORK! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!

  17. andyb Says:

make sure everything in the folders map/gfx etc copied over(except dll folders)

  18. Mike Says:

It’s really not worth the trouble. This is bottom of the barrel stuff. Not even a hint of interesting level design, just cavernous boxy rooms with no cover and some horribly retextured enemies (why would you do this?). No discernable point to it either. Walk from point A to point B, often in a straight line, shoot some enemies…next map loads, do the same. There are a couple of weapons besides the pistol, shotgun and mace-whatever, but you get 6 rounds for one and 20 for the other (Quake 2 hyperblaster model), and no more. Don’t know what the point of that was. This is a mess. Aside from the textures on the enemy models (where they’re about even), Quake 1 was a thousand times better.

  19. Heyzors Says:

Whatever then. Guess I’ll look for another HL1 mod. Any suggestions?

  20. Noel Says:

    Gameplay & Leveldesign
I read the mostly negative comments for this mod and decided to give it a run (also because I want to review every hl-mod on PP, but that’s another story). And I was surprised. Although geometry, leveldesign and the placing of enemys is all very rudimentary, the levels flashed me back into the times of glorious Doom and Quake. Textures are nice and half-decent used. Sadly the leveldesign is tending to get worse when you progress. Also it’s very short in playtime. You run around, fighting some retextured grunts (they look rather scary now) and xen-slaves who are obviously some lower demons. The new handgun is funny, because I liked the sound and the ability to fire a single shot or in rapid-fire mode. There is also a slightly modified shotgun with some hell of a sound if you fire it. The background music/noises of the level are decent but very atmospheric and all this good points are outweighting the bad ones (missing in-game storytelling, very bad brushwork) for me. Most important notice: I had a few minutes fun playing it (download-time about 1 minute) so it’s worth the download if you are able to getting deep in the atmosphere.

    Summary
If there where no music, no new weapons or enemys, this would easily be able to sink deep down the average-rating level. But because the mentioned points are already there and so it actually does make fun to play it!
Running trough doom-style levels and fighting creepy demon-soldiers with new sci-fi weapons while listening to dark-ambient music. There are things worse than this!

  21. Stef Says:

Hope to see you soon in the forum

    cheers
