We kept it simple...
There are a lot of great maps available but many players don't like using the Source Console. In addition, the general hassle of installing files and then deleting them after playing was considered too much trouble. For some maps it takes longer to install than to actually play! There are some fantastic short maps and it is a shame players don'ty play them.
The application was made to make it easy to install, play and then uninstall maps for some Source Games. Basically, the actions of installing and uninstalling are quite repetitive and can be automated. Being able to easily see what maps you have installed and whether or when you played them is also very useful.
Clearly, the application is limited in its objectives and operation. That's by design. I wanted something that was very easy to use and did what it was supposed to do. Sure, there might be the odd bug but that can happen with all software. If a new version is built it may have more functions but only if they are really necessary.
This was done on purpose. I don't believe MODS need an application to install them and the supposed benefits of such an application are open to debate. Therefore, MapTap only manages your maps and mappacks not proper Source MODS.
The application was built for use with my files; that is files downloaded from PlanetPhillip.Com. This was done because we needed a method of putting the files into the right game. Originally, we were going to use files within the archive to tell the application where to put them but this would have meant repackaging over 1000 files, which would have taken a long time. Some websites have "stolen" my files and hosted them on other servers without permission. ONLY files directly downloaded from PlanetPhilliop.Com should work. If you download a file from ANYWHERE else I don't offer any support.
Whilst the application may be useful to many players, some may still prefer to manually manage their maps. All the files downloaded from PP can still be used that way, so there is no compulsion to use MapTap - it's entirely up to you.
The application has a button that allows you to report archives that don't work. We did quite a lot of testing but sometimes only "real world" use can find these sorts of problems. If you encounter an archive that doesn't work, simply make sure it's selected in the list and click the "Report Archive" button. This will send me a report of the file name - NO OTHER DETAILS ARE SENT.
