As a seemingly normal day at work starts, Barney Calhoun visits security headquarters, including a shooting range and a surveillance room where it is possible to see Gordon Freeman again on camera heading towards the HEV Storage Area.
Calhoun is then sent to help some scientists with an elevator; along the way, he witnesses many incidents foreshadowing the resonance cascade, such as a pair of scientists vainly trying to fix a supercomputer. He also sees the G-Man passing by in a tram.

As the game begins, Barney Calhoun rides the tram from the Area 8 Topside Dormitories on the surface, into the underground sector of the Black Mesa Research Facility.
Along the way many new details about Black Mesa are revealed; Calhoun passes a laundromat and several fast food outlets, suggesting that the facility is very self-sufficient and probably houses many of its workers.
While Calhoun is locked outside the door to Area 3 Security Facilities, he is passed by Gordon Freeman riding in another tram heading towards Sector C in a scene that mirrors one in the original game, in which Gordon Freeman sees a guard locked out of a door on the inside of a tunnel.

Triage has generated some interesting discussion and Wilson, the lead developer, and I found some time to chat.
I grill him on the significant changes made to the gameplay and I have to say he responses were thoughtful and insightful.
That’s not to say he thinks the mod is perfect and we also discuss the errors made.
It’s about an hour long and the interview seems to end three times but I suddenly start talking about something else.
Lastly, I seem to cut him off at the end, so sorry about that.

Here is another HL3 Question. Seeing a pattern? Think I know something you don’t?
Anyway, assuming you have a regular PC and not some fancy, screaming fast machine, if HL3 was released next week would you play it straight away on a lower graphical setting or wait until you had a machine that could run it properly?

“The Bad Guys have taken over a building in a Generic American City, and they’ve kidnapped some Innocent Scientists and forced them to genetically engineer Evil Mutated Monsters as part of a fiendish plan for World Domination.
But the creations have turned on their creators and escaped, and are running amok inside the building, in an orgy of Death and Destruction.
The marines have set up some defensive positions.
The zombies spawn and attack those positions.
Wander around, selecting the weapon of your choice and keep them at bay for as along as possible.
Unless you’ve been trapped in Xen, then I’m sure you heard the news that Disney has bought the Star Wars franchise from George Lucas.
Some like the idea and others hate it. Perhaps Mr. Lucas added some caveats about IP cross over or some other points related to keeping the SW universe pure etc. I’m not a huge fan of Star Wars but it would be cool to have some new movies to watch.

Here is the podcast for my 6×10 Mapping Competition Series.
It features William, from Podcast 17, who did Let’s Play videos of each mod, and three mappers who entered the competitions; Justin, David and Tony.
I explain why I choose the format, the guests discuss their thoughts on the format, we then move onto to our overall feelings about the whole series and the mods it produced.
We then take a look at each competition and discuss the entries from the guests, including our favourites.
Then we add our final thoughts and finish with a brief discussion about possible future formats.
I really enjoyed recording this and hope you enjoy listening – it’s a long one!

So, let’s be clear, from this moment forward, and probably some time in the past, I will be calling the next game in the HL series: Half-Life 3.
I think we all agree it’s not going to be an episode any more.
Onto the poll question. My working life is a little different to what it was 20 years ago and I no longer have the opportunity to take days off when I want it – basically, I work when I am told to.
